  • A Thorn in the Saddle

A Thorn in the Saddle by Rebekah Weatherspoon

A Thorn in the Saddle by Rebekah Weatherspoon is 99c! I believe this is Weatherspoon’s most recent release and came out in October. It was mentioned in a Hide Your Wallet post and is book three in her Cowboys of California series.

Award-winning author Rebekah Weatherspoon delivers a charming contemporary tale about a brawny rancher, a brainy beauty–and a beast of a predicament…

Ranch owner Jesse Pleasant always felt too big for his desert town–literally–and too brutish to fit in with his charming, cowboy brothers. After his temper gets the best of him one time too many, he’s ready to accept the truth: he’s cursed to be alone. But when the Senate selection committee comes looking for a man of his public standing, he knows this might be his chance to prove to his family and friends that he can keep his cool, all while giving back to his community. There’s only one problem. While Jesse definitely has a mind for business, his people skills are more than lacking.

Former tech consultant Lily-Grace Leroux has had it up to her hat with hot-tempered men who think they know what’s best, especially a big headed rancher set on keeping her widowed father from dating his grandmother. But after Lily-Grace learns of Jesse’s softer side during a painfully awkward showing at a community date auction, one thing becomes clear; Jesse Pleasant is not ready to run for public office. At least not yet. Against her better judgement, Lily-Grace offers to help Jesse learn how to connect with his prospective constituents. She never dreamed they would build their own connection, one destined for its own happily ever after…

  • Song of the Forever Rains

Song of the Forever Rains by E.J. Mellow

Song of the Forever Rains by E.J. Mellow is $1.99! This one was published by Amazon, so it’s only available there. On Goodreads, there does seem to be some confusion on whether this falls into adult romance or young adult. Others say it splits the different at new adult.

From the award-winning author of the Dreamland series comes a new dark romantic fantasy about a young woman finding hope in her powers of destruction.

The Thief Kingdom is a place hidden within the world of Aadlior. Many whisper of its existence, but few have found this place, where magic and pleasure abound. There, the mysterious Thief King reigns supreme with the help of the Mousai, a trio of revered and feared sorceresses.

Larkyra Bassette may be the youngest of the Mousai, but when she sings her voice has the power to slay monsters. When it’s discovered the Duke of Lachlan is siphoning a poisonous drug from the Thief Kingdom and using it to abuse his tenants, Larkyra is offered her first solo mission to stop the duke. Eager to prove herself, Larkyra accepts by posing as the duke’s potential bride. But her plans grow complicated when she finds herself drawn to Lord Darius Mekenna, Lachlan’s rightful heir. Soon she suspects Darius has his own motivations for ridding Lachlan of the corrupt duke. Larkyra and Darius must learn to trust each other if there is to be any hope of saving the people of Lachlan—and themselves.

Welcome to the world of Aadilor, where lords and ladies can be murderers and thieves, and the most alluring notes are often the deadliest. Dare to listen?

  • The Mane Event

The Mane Event by Shelly Laurenston

RECOMMENDED: The Mane Event by Shelly Laurenston is $1.99!. This is book one in her Pride series, and is a terrific, campy blend of ferocious women, shape shifters, alpha males, and paranormal fun. This book is also two stories in one.

Mace Llewellyn. Brendon Shaw. Two tall, gorgeous, sexy alpha heroes who are 100% male―with a little something extra. Lion-shifters, to be exact, who can unleash every woman’s animal side and still look good―make that spectacular―in a suit… and even better out of it…

NYPD cop Desiree “Dez” MacDermot knows she’s changed a lot since she palled around with her childhood buddy, Mace. But it’s fair to say that Mace has changed even more. It isn’t just those too-sexy gold eyes, or the six-four, built-like-a-Navy Seal body. It’s something in the way he sniffs her neck and purrs, making her entire body tingle…

Meanwhile, for Tennessean Ronnie Lee Reed, New York City is the place where any girl―even one who runs with a Pack―can redefine herself. First order of business: find a mate, settle down, and stop using men for sex. Even big, gorgeous, lion shifter men like Brendon Shaw. But she needn’t worry, because now that Brendon’s set his sights on her, the predator in him is ready to pounce and never let go…

  • A Promise of Fire

A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet

RECOMMENDED: A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet is $1.99! There’s a new book in the series out in October, focusing on a different couple. I gave the book an A, though there’s a great discussion in the comments if you’re on the fence:

I can say, without a doubt, that A Promise of Fire is going on my keeper shelf. I want more of these characters and I want more of this world. I cannot remember the last time I wanted to both savor and devour a book, and Bouchet’s writing is so engaging and magical that I wish she had some sort of backlist I could dive into for the next few months.

KINGDOMS WILL RISE AND FALL FOR HER…

“Cat” Catalia Fisa lives disguised as a soothsayer in a traveling circus. She is perfectly content avoiding the danger and destiny the Gods—and her homicidal mother—have saddled her with. That is, until Griffin, an ambitious warlord from the magic-deprived south, fixes her with his steely gaze and upsets her illusion of safety forever.

BUT NOT IF SHE CAN HELP IT

Griffin knows Cat is the Kingmaker, the woman who divines the truth through lies. He wants her as a powerful weapon for his newly conquered realm—until he realizes he wants her for much more than her magic. Cat fights him at every turn, but Griffin’s fairness, loyalty, and smoldering advances make him increasingly hard to resist and leave her wondering if life really does have to be short, and lived alone.

The whole Cowboys of California series got my out of my latest reading slump! I loved Jesse’s journey (including therapy!) and spent most of an afternoon alternately reading Thorn in the Saddle and texting my friend how much I loved it.

Sample line that just made me go mush:

“She said she wanted a horse, and my brain just said, well, buy her a horse then.”

Arctic Fury by Greer Macallister is $1.99
Rescued by a Bad Boy by Kaitlin Nolan is a free preorder
Let Me Be the One by Kait Nolan is free

  3. Lisa F says:

The Bouchet and Weatherspoon are my picks here. Love love love Weatherspoon’s work.

  4. Darlynne says:

Weatherspoon’s books are terrific, particularly in terms of relationships and characters trying/working to figure themselves out. And the stories are nicely connected.

  5. Susan says:

I’ll second Arctic Fury by Greer Macallister! One of my favorite authors and a terrific book.

The Rebound by Catherine Walsh is $0.99 – It just came out 2/14 and I enjoyed her first book One Night Only.

  6. Susan says:

Oh, y’all almost got me sold on the Weatherspoon.

I LOVED A Promise of Fire…but then it all went downhill from there. I barely finished (as in, I just started skipping until until I could reach the end) book 2. I practically had some kind of emotional whiplash that came from the unexpected switch from book euphoria to book rage. This series, or at least the first two books, gave me trust issues. (I’m not the only one, right? Right?) I bought book 3 at some point but, honestly, never had any desire to start it. I really hope one of the SBs will review book 4 and let me know if the series is worth revisiting or if I should continue nursing my hurt.

(BTW, I’m a different Susan from the one above. We are legion.)

  7. SusanE says:

    Yes, we are legion.

I also loved A Promise of Fire. Then I read the next one and thought, “How did my smart badass heroine turn into a silly, giggly airhead?” Very disappointing, never tried #3.

  8. Jeannette says:

The MANE EVENT is a good introduction to Laurenston’s shifters in NYC series. The heroine in the first has a Bronx accent and takes no prisoners. The second story has one of my favorite scenes. It’s a bunch of friends talking while eating chocolate cake and somehow I can’t help reading it aloud when I come to it every time.

  9. Kareni says:

I also enjoyed A Promise of Fire but did not care for the next book.

  10. The Other Kate says:

Adding a fourth vote for “loved the beginning of the Promise of Fire series and then hard-DNFed it.” Once the hero told the heroine that she was pregnant (!) and then man-splained all the things she wasn’t allowed to do any more, I was done.
