The Menopause Manifesto

RECOMMENDED: The Menopause Manifesto by Dr. Jen Gunter is $1.99! Thanks to everyone who let us know about this sale. Tara gave it an A:
If your field of fucks is completely barren and you just want some straightforward, evidence-based information served with a healthy dose of snark and the occasional jab at pseudoscience and Gwyneth Paltrow, this will be the book for you.
The internationally renowned, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Vagina Bible , Dr. Jen Gunter has been called the world’s most famous–and outspoken–gynecologist (The Guardian), the internet’s OB/GYN, and one of the fiercest advocates for women’s health. Now, in The Menopause Manifesto, Dr. Jen Gunter brings you empowerment through knowledge by countering stubborn myths and misunderstandings about menopause with hard facts, real science, fascinating historical perspective, and expert advice.
The only thing predictable about menopause is its unpredictability. Factor in widespread misinformation, a lack of research, and the culture of shame around women’s bodies, and it’s no wonder women are unsure what to expect during the menopause transition and beyond.
Menopause is not a disease–it’s a planned change, like puberty. And just like puberty, we should be educated on what’s to come years in advance, rather than the current practice of leaving people on their own with bothersome symptoms and too much conflicting information. Knowing what is happening, why, and what to do about it is both empowering and reassuring.
Frank and funny, Dr. Jen debunks misogynistic attitudes and challenges the
over-mystification of menopause to reveal everything you really need to know about:– Perimenopause
– Hot flashes
– Sleep disruption
– Sex and libido
– Depression and mood changes
– Skin and hair issues
– Outdated therapies
– Breast health
– Weight and muscle mass
– Health maintenance screening
– And much more!Filled with practical, reassuring information, this essential guide will revolutionize how women experience menopause–including how their lives can be even better for it!

The Kingmaker by Kennedy Ryan is FREE! If you’ve been looking to try out Ryan’s steamy, angsty contemporaries, less than a dollar is a great price. This is the first book in a completed duet and I believe the first book has a bit of a cliffhanger. Correct me if I’m wrong!
From beloved, RITA-award-winning author Kennedy Ryan comes the first in her gripping All the King’s Men duology.
In a world of haves and have-nots, Maxim Cade’s family and their oil empire have it all…and he wants nothing to do with it. At odds with his mogul father, he’s determined to build his own empire, even if it means traveling far from home, painted as the black sheep.
Lennix Hunter is the exception to every one of Maxim’s rules. At a protest for the oil pipeline that threatens to mar her ancestral land forever, they meet in a flurry of stars and sparks, and that one moment changes everything. But Maxim’s family is the one stealing from hers, and his father is the man she hates most. He has to lie in order to have her once, and despite the truth, he’ll do anything to keep her.
Even though Lennix tries to hate Maxim, too, their hearts are pointed in the same direction. The inexorable pull between them, across miles and years, will not be denied.
And neither will Maxim.

Forgotten Sins by Rebecca Zanetti is $1.99. This is the first book in her Sin Brothers series. This is intense erotic romantic suspense with an amnesiac hero. Readers loved the balance of action and romance, while others found the heroine TSTL (too stupid to live).

Hot Asset by Lauren Layne is 99c! This is a contemporary romance and the first book, though it looks like the entire series is on sale. I thought this one was okay, though not my favorite Layne. I wanted more antagonism between the characters and less immediate pants feelings. It also looks like other books in the series are on sale!
A sexy agent hounds Wall Street’s hottest new wolf in an exhilarating novel from New York Times bestselling author Lauren Layne.
Ian Bradley is the definition of a Wall Street hotshot: seven-figure salary, designer suits, and a corner office. His drive off the floor is just as potent. Every woman who knows him has felt the rush. But now he’s met his match in Lara McKenzie—a woman with the power to bring Ian to his knees.
An ambitious, whip-smart daughter of FBI agents, Lara is a rising star in fighting white-collar crime. Her latest case—the investigation of Ian Bradley for insider trading—could make her career. She knows a scoundrel when she sees one. Ian fits the bill: a cocky, ridiculously handsome bad boy with a slick swagger.
She’ll do anything to prove he’s guilty. He’ll do anything to prove he’s not. But it’s only a matter of time before their fierce battle of wits gets oh so hot and personal. Now, taking down Ian has become more than business for Lara. It’s become a pleasure—and there’s more at risk than she ever dreamed.

@Kareni: thank you—there’s lots of good books on that list, something for all tastes and the price is right. Of the books available, I personally recommend the following:
WEDDING AT THE RIVERVIEW INN by Molly O’Keefe: Second-chance between ex-spouses.
HER COWBOY RIVAL by Genevieve Turner: antagonists-to-lovers as two “enemies” must team up for a charity benefit.
MAKE ME WILDER by Serena Bell: Antagonists-to-lovers and the first book in Bell’s Wilder Outdoor Adventures series. Bell’s books are rarely available as freebies, so grab while you can.
THE COWBOY’S BRIDE by Amelia Wilde: Antagonists-to-lovers, published in 2019 before Wilde moved into writing darker romances.
HOT MESS by Misha Horne: m/m between new neighbors. Horne was one of my “discoveries” this year—she excels at writing kink-with-a-lot-of-heartfelt-emotion.
HEAT FOR THE HOLIDAYS by Allyson Lindt: four full-length MMF romances.
I’m still trying to figure out if I’m being extra sensitive about this because I haven’t seen anyone else call out this line, but about 3% into The Menopause Manifesto I read this quote and then read it over again and again to see if I was reading it right:
“…unlike your first period, the final menstrual period feels like a dotage date-and who wants to be forty-eight and making plans for either graduating to a plucky lady detective who is forced to pass off her competence as a series of fortunate breaks, a vindictive matriarch exacting retribution for her societal impotence on all who cross her path, or an asexual homebody with an ever-increasing assortment of cats with questionable litter box skills?”
It hit a nerve, because I am that last example she cites (though my cats have great litter box skills) and I understand the point she’s trying to make-that menopause isn’t a death sentence or something that will suddenly change who you are-but while I think the first two examples are vague archetypes of a fictional character, the third is suggesting to me that being asexual is something to be feared or derided. Am I the only person who read it like this, or am I missing some context or misinterpreting? I remember liking The Vagina Bible but was pretty disappointed with that line so I put The Menopause Manifesto down there and added What Fresh Hell Is This? by Heather Corinna to my TBR – I’ve heard it’s supposed to be more gender inclusive.
@DDD, thank you for the recommendations.
I see now @fichen1 had already posted the same offer in a different post.
@Erin – while I don’t think that particular phrase tripped me (I probably just rolled my eyes) I did struggle with the focus on ciswomen, even as I understand why she did not choose to use universally inclusive language. I will definitely check out the Corrina work, thanks for the heads up!
Note that Jeannie Lin’s Gunpowder Alchemy is on the list of free ebooks that Kareni links to.
(Warning: I understand the book ends on a cliffhanger.)
Another one on the free list: “The Girl Next Door” by Amy Jo Cousins. It’s very good, although even better if you’ve read Book 1 in the series where the MCs are introduced. Cash is a football player with no filter between his thoughts and his mouth which is OK because he is a very kind person, and Steph is the sharp-edged woman he kinda-sorta had a thing with in college, now embittered by a recent breakup. They have a wonderful friendship dynamic.
I found the Menopause Manifesto very informative, and wish that I had had it a decade ago. And now I realize that is my privilege showing. There weer some sections where I wondered how much to believe her and how much to believe other things I have read.
I liked the emphasis on the value of people after menopause. That one’s value isn’t tied to one’s fertility. This reminds of the book, The Midwife’s Tale by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, where Martha Ballard contributes greatly to her household once her children are raised.
The first 6 books in Kris Ripper’s The Scientific Method Universe are on sale for a dollar each. This is a hugely addictive kinky, poly erotic romance series. It’s the story of a young man named Will’s exploration of kink and his dom Hugh’s exploration of love. They are both poly and Will is bi – part of the journey is how they both find love with other partners and figure out how to fold them into their connection.
Please note that this is one of zir earlier series and the writing isn’t as smooth as The Love Study series or Queers of LaVista. It also wasn’t planned as a romance series – it started life as a series of erotic novellas. I feel like Hugh’s character development in general is a little weird – like there are parts of his past and his character that probably worked well as background info in erotica but don’t work so well in a more realistic contemporary romance. That said, I completely glommed this series when I first read it. Most of the sex is m/m or m/m/m but there’s some m/f once Will gets a girlfriend and at least on m/m/m/f scene.

@Erin
Considering that Asexual is an orientation, we definitely need a different word or words to describe when people are unfairly seen as not sexually worthy by society. The author made a serious mistake by using the word that way, even to make a valid point. I don’t blame you for not continuing to read.
@Erin: she may’ve meant to say “sexless,” that seems to be the usual word for women perceived as excluded from sexuality by age, disability, or whatever. There is a nasty gender element tied up in it as it implies “not a woman,” sexuality being seen as a core part of womanness.
Thanks everyone for your comments… taking a step back I can see what her meaning probably was, though obviously the words we use matter. I learned valuable information from The Vagina Bible and Jen Gunter is a fellow Canadian – from what I knew, I looked up to her as a doctor challenging pseudoscience – so it was extra disappointing for me to read that, but I’m sure there’s a lot of good information in there too.
@Erin
I’m allo but I noticed that line too, in addition to the gender essentialist language and put it aside after a couple of chapters in favor of What Fresh Hell Is This?, which was an excellent decision. WFHIT turned out to be one of my favorite reads of this year!
I remember The Vagina Bible being more inclusive (but definitely could have missed stuff) so it was quite puzzling that she chose to go in a different direction for The Menopause Manifesto. Maybe I’ll pick it back up eventually or at least use it as a resource but it’s hard for me to read a book that I won’t be able to recommend widely because of her language choices.
@LeighKramer Thanks, Leigh! Looking forward to picking up WFHIT!
