  • Back in the Burbs

Back in the Burbs by Tracy Wolff

Back in the Burbs by Tracy Wolff and Avery Flynn is 99c! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. This seems to lean more toward chick lit rather than a full-on contemporary romance. Have you read this one?

Ever have one of those days where life just plain sucks? Welcome to my last three months—ever since I caught my can’t-be-soon-enough ex-husband cheating with his paralegal. I’m thirty-five years old, and I’ve lost my NYC apartment, my job, my money, and frankly, my dignity.

But the final heartache in the suck sandwich of my life? My great-aunt Maggie died. The only family member who’s ever gotten me.

Even after death, though, she’s helping me get back up. She’s willed me the keys to a house in the burbs, of all places, and dared me to grab life by the family jewels. Well, I’ve got the vise grips already in hand (my ex should take note) and I’m ready to fight for my life again.

Too bad that bravado only lasts as long as it takes to drive into Huckleberry Hills. And see the house.

There are forty-seven separate HOA violations, and I feel them all in my bones. Honestly, I’m surprised no one’s “accidentally” torched the house yet. I want to, and I’ve only been standing in front of it for five minutes. But then my hot, grumpy neighbor tells me to mow the lawn first and I’m just…done. Done with men too sexy for their own good and done with anyone telling me what to do ever again.

First rule of surviving the burbs? There is nothing that YouTube and a glass of wine can’t conquer.

  • Who Wants to Marry a Duke

Who Wants to Marry a Duke by Sabrina Jeffries

Who Wants to Marry a Duke by Sabrina Jeffries is $1.99! It also looks like it’s part of KU. This is the third book in the Duke Dynasty series and the previous two books are also on sale. I believe Catherine mentioned it on a previous Hide Your Wallet. Are you a fan of the series?

Stepsiblings in search of the truth about their mother’s succession of beloved husbands—and their own surprising identities as eligible young nobles—are the endearing stars of this dazzling series from New York Times bestselling author Sabrina Jeffries . . .

A past kiss with adorably bookish Miss Olivia Norley should be barely a memory for Marlowe Drake, the Duke of Thornstock. After all, there are countless debutantes for a handsome rakehell to charm beyond a young lady whose singular passion is chemistry—of the laboratory type. But Thorn has not forgotten—or forgiven—the shocking blackmail scheme sparked by that single kiss, or the damage caused to both their names. Now Thorn’s half-brother, Grey, has hired the brilliant Miss Norley for her scientific expertise in solving a troubling family mystery. And the once-burned Thorn, suspicious of her true motives, vows to follow her every move . . .

For Olivia, determining whether arsenic poisoning killed Grey’s father is the pioneering experiment that could make her career—and Thorn’s constant presence is merely a distraction. But someone has explosive plans to derail her search. Soon the most unexpected discovery is the caring nature of the reputed scoundrel beside her—and the electricity it ignites between them . . .

  • The Duke Who Loved Me

The Duke Who Loved Me by Jane Ashford

The Duke Who Loved Me by Jane Ashford is FREE! If this looks familiar, it’s because Catherine read it and gave it a D+. Granted, the book is free, but give her a review a glance if you’re curious about it before cluttering up your e-reader.

The Duke of Tereford is accustomed to getting his own way, but she’s going to teach him a thing or two about love…

James Cantrell, the new Duke of Tereford, has inherited a dukedom in disarray and is overwhelmed by his unaccustomed responsibilities. Then he gets an idea. Cecelia Vainsmede served as liaison between James and her father, and she knows a great deal about business matters, his own in particular. She’s also quite pretty. Ever the pragmatist, he suggests a marriage of convenience.

Cecelia has always been good at working with James, but she doesn’t understand how he can be so obtuse. He clearly doesn’t realize that he’s the duke she’s always wished for, or that his offer is an insult. But when a German prince arrives in London and immediately sets out to woo Cecelia, James will have to come to terms with what he really feels for her. Is running away worth the cost of losing her, or will the duke dare to win her once and for all?

Bestselling author Jane Ashford takes you to a dazzling Regency England you won’t want to leave!

  • Soulless

    Soulless by Gail Carriger

RECOMMENDED: Soulless by Gail Carriger is $2.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! This is the first book by the Parasol Protectorate series and for many readers, this book ignited their love for Carriger’s writing. I loved the first book, especially the heroine, but I agree with other reviewers in that there’s a lot of different things going on that conflict with one another.

Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she’s a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette.

Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire—and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.

With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London’s high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?

  1. LJO says:

The first 3 books in the Duke Dynasty series are $1.99 each. Book four, Undercover Duke is $.99.

I enjoyed the bit of mystery of this series, it kept the pages turning and me well engaged.

  2. Jcp says:

Christmas in Harmony Ridge by Olene Quinn

  3. Susanna says:

Soulless is a heck of a lot of fun.

  4. Mzcue says:

I have a question about the posture of the woman drawn in the cover of Souless. It has always troubled me because it looks so uncomfortable. Does the character have spinal issues? Or is it a caricature of the ideal notion of women’s figures at the time? The degree of contortion between the shoulders and torso looks painful.

  5. LisaM says:

Back to the Burbs looks like fun, and luckily my library has it available. We’re having some issues with our HOA, so I’m curious to see if the HOA here is a help or a hindrance/nightmare.

  6. Merle says:

@Mzcue: very relieved to see I am not the only one bothered by the contorted posture on the cover of Soulless. My back starts to hurt if I even look at it.

  7. DonnaMarie says:

@Mzcue & Merle, I’d have to say caricature, as the cover for SOULLESS is actually a complete disconnect from the character. Alexia is described at rather voluptuous.

  8. Cosmogyral says:

I remember the photo used on the cover of Soulless was originally taken for a now-defunct online catalog for Steampunk clothing. My guess was that they’d given the model too many props (one in each hand) and she was trying not to obscure the dress being sold with them–or maybe they were just trying too hard to look interesting.

  9. Carrie G says:

CATALYST (Flashpoint 2) by Rachel Grant is FREE on Amazon. Grant does a great job blending romance and suspense and her settings are well research and feel real. This is a series but the books work well as stand alone titles.

  10. Joy says:

The cover of Carringer’s first book is just strange. The other covers in the series aren’t as bad though the last is awkward. I bought them in spite of the covers but they are offputting.

  11. Mzcue says:

Thanks for comments about Carringer’s Soulless cover. I noticed that the umbrella handle is also curved as if to echo the woman’s posture. That made me think it had to do with something specific in the story. The woman looks so very uncomfortable, but so unconcerned about it, that I was actually put off from reading the book. It was a fingernails on chalkboard sort of aversion. Maybe now knowing that it’s incidental, I’ll give the book a try.

  12. footiepjs says:

Off the Clock (Pleasure Principle #1) by Roni Loren is on sale for $1.99.

I loved this when I read it in 2016 but the more I think about it, the less I feel like I can recommend it. Read the blurb and try and find a list of content warnings because this book is pretty heavy.

  13. Susan says:

The audiobook of Back in the Burbs is free for Audible Plus members.

  14. Caroline B Kipps says:

I must have picked up the Parasol Protectorate series at the right time. I got a kick out of the main character and read the series—and it is rare for me to finish series. It does have a bit of crazy going on, which made me laugh aloud at times, but I found the characters interesting and the action and pace pretty quick, which is important for me. Too often with my ADHD I get bored or can see where the plot arc is heading and bail.

  15. lorenet says:

The author of Soulless is dead to me.
