  • The Girl with Stars in Her Eyes

The Girl with Stars in Her Eyes by Xio Axelrod

The Girl with Stars in Her Eyes by Xio Axelrod is $1.99! This came out in the spring and has second chance romance elements and characters involved in the music industry. This one had a lot of buzz. Did you read it?

Her name’s Antonia “Toni” Bennette (yeah, she’s heard all the jokes before) and she’s not a rock star. Neither are the Lillys—not yet. But the difference between being famous and being almost famous can be a single wrong note…or the start of something that’ll change your life forever.

Growing up in dive bars up and down the East Coast, Toni Bennette’s guitar was her only companion…until she met Sebastian Quick. Seb was a little older, a lot wiser, and before long he was Toni’s way out, promising they’d escape their stifling small town together. Then Seb turned eighteen and split without looking back.

Now, Toni’s all grown up and making a name for herself in Philadelphia’s indie scene. When a friend suggests she try out for a hot new up-and-coming band, Toni decides to take a chance. Strong, feminist, and fierce as fire, Toni B. and the Lillys are the perfect match…except Seb’s now moonlighting as their manager. Whatever. Toni can handle it. No problem. Or it wouldn’t be if Seb didn’t still hold a piece of her heart…not to mention the key to her future.

  • Writing Her In

Writing Her In by Holley Trent

Writing Her In by Holley Trent is 99c! This is the first book in Trent’s Plot Twist series, which focuses on poly and triad romances with at least one character (sometimes more) involved in the book industry. It’s been recommend in the comments of Whatcha Reading before. Have you read it?

There’s room in a heart for more than one kind of love.

Dara and Adrien Valliere are soul mates and best friends…but they’re not lovers. Their marriage may be unconventional, but it’s satisfying and loving, and they’ve never needed anything or anyone else.

Until they met writer Stacia Leonard.

Stacia built a career on maintaining close ties with her fictional characters while keeping everyone else at arm’s length. She avoids intimacy, apart from a few one-night stands when the loneliness and need become too much. But when Adrien Valliere, her cover model and long-distance friend, invites her for drinks, she’s too fascinated to refuse.

Dara recognizes the physical attraction between her husband and Stacia and sees it for what it is: an opportunity to help Adrien get what he needs. Dara can breathe easy knowing that both she and her husband are happy.

Before long, though, it’s clear that Stacia’s connection isn’t just with Adrien… She and Dara have something special, and it’s something neither of them can—or want to—deny.

  • A Lady’s Guide to Mischief and Mayhem

A Lady’s Guide to Mischief and Mayhem by Manda Collins

A Lady’s Guide to Mischief and Mayhem by Manda Collins is $1.99! This originally had an illustrated cover and now it looks more like the new Bridgerton redesigns. Some readers loved the balance of romance and mystery, while others wanted more excitement from the plot.

An intrepid female reporter matches wits with a serious, sexy detective in award-winning author Manda Collin’s fun and flirty historical rom-com, perfect for readers of Evie Dunmore, Julia Quinn, and Tessa Dare!

England, 1865 : As one of England’s most notorious newspaper columnists, Lady Katherine Bascomb believes knowledge is power. And she’s determined to inform and educate the ladies of London on the nefarious-and deadly-criminals who are praying on the fairer sex. When her reporting leads to the arrest of a notorious killer, however, Katherine flees to a country house party to escape her newfound notoriety-only to witness a murder on her very first night. And when the lead detective accuses Katherine of inflaming-rather than informing-the public with her column, she vows to prove him wrong.

Detective Inspector Andrew Eversham’s refusal to compromise his investigations nearly cost him his own career, and he blames Katherine. To avoid bad publicity, his superiors are pressuring him to solve cases quickly rather than correctly. When he discovers she’s the key witness in a new crime, he’s determined to prevent the beautiful widow from once again wreaking havoc on his case. Yet as Katherine proves surprisingly insightful and Andrew impresses Katherine with his lethal competency, both are forced to admit the fire between them is more flirtatious than furious. But to explore the passion between them, they’ll need to catch a killer.

  1. chacha1 says:

I liked ‘Spellbound’ a lot, so much so that I immediately got the other books. While there is plenty of social realism, it felt like a gentler ‘Magpie Lord.’

  2. FashionablyEvil says:

LADY’S GUIDE was okay—it didn’t quite come together for me mostly because the heroine is pretty opaque, but if Jane Austen plus Nancy Drew sounds like your jam, give this one a try. I don’t know if I like the new cover better, but I am grateful that this time they gave the heroine the right color hair.

  3. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I liked WRITING HER IN. Based on my reading, it seems that MFF-ménage romances are much rarer than MFM- or MMF-ménage, so it was nice to read something a little different in the ménage category. And I thought Trent did a good job of showing how a woman with an extremely sheltered upbringing might have no idea of her true sexuality until it was literally right in front of her.

  4. LML says:

The earlier cover of A Lady’s Guide to Mischief and Mayhem was very similar -including the font- to Dianne Freeman’s Countess of Harleigh series which begins with A Lady’s Guide to Mischief and Murder. It took a bit of time for me to untangle which was which when I wanted to read the Countess of Harleigh series. Usually I grumble to myself when covers change but I think this will help readers.

  5. Musette says:

@LML – thanks for that clarification! I kept wondering why the title sounded familiar yet the story not so much.

  6. Sophie says:

I really liked writing her in. I appreciated the way that there was a distinction made between romantic love and sexual desire- Dara and Aiden definitely love each other, but Dara is only attracted to women. I just found the way that their established relationship grows as they both fall in love with Stacia to be really heartwarming.

  7. Kris Bock says:

I quite like to Spellbound and the sequel, and I’m looking forward to reading book 3 when I have a chance. I thought they had plenty of action and a certain sweetness that made me smile.

  8. Sandra says:

@LML: I thought the same thing. Interesting enough, B&N shows the old cover on the dead tree versions and the new on the ebook. When I downloaded it, the old cover showed up on my nook to shortly be replaced by the new one.

But the book itself wasn’t that great. I bailed on it about halfway through. Not overly funny for a book pitched as a romcom. I pegged the villain, though not why he was the villain, on his first appearance. And the H/h’s interior monologues were both repetitive and superficial. The Countess of Harleigh books are much better, though I refuse to pay $13.50 for an ebook for the most recent one.
