Links: Ina Garten, Photography, & More

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Welcome to Wednesday Links!

We’re starting to get the first whiffs of fall in New England and I’m so ready. The biggest downside is allergies. I never knew fall allergies were a thing until I moved up here and now I get two seasons where I’m a snotty, sneezy mess with awful sinus pressure. It’s absolutely terrible.

In other news, I’m attending a Halloween wedding and I’m so excited to turn my cocktail attired into a fun costume. I have purchased horns!

Buckle up for this saga of one man’s grave error in buying a truck full of rice.

Since we’ve already kicked off Links with a Twitter story. Here is another about a couple’s discovery that a crab has nested in their attic and appears to have been there for quite some time.

I love comedian Jo Firestone and her new project looks to be so adorable. Starting in March of 2020, she began teach a stand-up class for senior citizens virtually. They were finally able to meet in person and this is their journey from their first workshop to their showcase. The show premieres October 15th.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum has a new exhibit on 19th century Black photographers and their works! The article is a little short, but I hope this is something you can add to your future travel list.

I follow a few drag performers on YouTube and I’m obsessed with this parody series by Olympia. The latest subject: Ina Garten.

Don’t forget to share what cool or interesting things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

I love Ina, but that parody is so spot on!

Re “crabs in the attic”: many years ago, we discovered squirrels were living in our attic. Apparently, the previous owner of our house was a ham radio operator and he’d removed the screening material on the attic vents in order to run his antenna to the roof. So the squirrels just climbed up the closest tree and did a backflip into our attic. I learned so much about having wild animals in your attic, the two most important being: (1) most homeowners insurance policies do not cover electrical fires that occur when an animal chews through your electrical wiring (thank God that didn’t happen…but it was still a major worry); and (2) at least in our state (Louisiana), squirrels are classified as “wildlife” not “pests” and cannot be removed in the same way you could remove, say, rats. As the guy from the pest control company told me, “If they were rats, I’d be able to take care of them for you, but if it’s got a bushy tail, you’ve got to get a wildlife removal expert.” So we did—and humanely trapped a family of squirrels (at least three generations, per the trapper) using Hav-A-Heart traps baited with peanut butter & marshmallow fluff. Then we drove them to a wooded area (it had to be at least 10 miles away, the trapper told us, or they’d find their way back) and set them free.

TL;DR: Make sure all the access points to your attic are screened and sealed up tight!

As someone who volunteers at a wildlife rehab, that critter Twitter had me laugh crying!!

    LMFAO

Got a kick that Ellen Kushner (Swordspoint) commented on the rice saga tweets.

That rice thread is a full year old now (somehow???) and it says something about how good the story is that I’ve repeated it as best I could at least once in that time…

I recently discovered MEpearlA on Youtube. I came for the possums, stayed for Pearl’s lovable wackiness. Halloweaster! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Kt4HApJr5k&t=40s&ab_channel=MEpearlA
