  • Open House

    Open House by Ruby Lang

RECOMMENDED: Open House by Ruby Lang is 99c! Aarya read this one and gave it a B+:

Nitpicks aside, Open House is a shining example of what novellas can accomplish. High word count isn’t necessary for the emotional resonance of numerous complex issues. I enthusiastically recommend Open House to any reader looking to laugh and cry while reading a short contemporary romance.

Love can take root where you least expect it.

Tyson Yang never imagined that one day he’d be the de facto spokesperson for an illegal community garden. But when the once-rat-infested-but-now-thriving Harlem lot goes up for sale, Ty can’t just let all their hard work get plowed under.

Even if he is irresistibly drawn to the lovely but infuriatingly stubborn real estate associate.

Magda Ferrer’s family is already convinced this new job will be yet another flop in her small but growing list of career path failures. But her student debt isn’t going anywhere, and selling her uncle’s historic town house and the lot nearby means a chance to get some breathing room.

Ty is her charming rival, her incorrigible nemesis, the handsome roadblock to her success.

Until one hot Harlem night blurs the hard line drawn between them, and the seeds of possibility in this rocky garden blossom into love…

  • Dalliances & Devotion

Dalliances & Devotion by Felicia Grossman

Dalliances & Devotion by Felicia Grossman is $1.99! This is the second book in The Truitts series. Claudia gave this one a B:

Readers who enjoy seeing characters embark on literal and figurative road trips will like this book. As long as they are patient with a few detours, the journey and the destination are worth it.

A change in course can be refreshing…when it’s done together.

    1871

After two disastrous marriages, beauty columnist Amalia Truitt’s life is finally her own—well, it will be if she can get herself back to Delaware and demand access to her share of the Truitt family fortune. After all, the charity she’s organized for women who can’t afford their own divorces won’t fund itself.

However, not everyone wants her to reach her destination. When her family learns she’s been receiving anonymous death threats, a solo journey is out of the question.

Enter David Zisskind, the ragtag-peddler-turned-soldier whose heart Amalia broke years ago. He’s a Pinkerton now, and the promotion he craves depends on protecting his long-lost love on the unexpectedly treacherous journey across Pennsylvania.

That their physical connection has endured the test of time (and then some) is problematic, to say the least.

In very close quarters, with danger lurking around every curve, with each kiss and illicit touch, the wrongs of the past are righted. But David can’t weather another rejection, especially with his career in jeopardy. And Amalia can’t possibly take a lover, never mind another husband…not with so much depending on her repaired reputation. Not when she’s hurt David—her David—so badly before.

  • Special Interests

    Special Interests by Emma Barry

Special Interests by Emma Barry is 99c! This is a contemporary romance set in D.C. with both characters involved in politics. Politicians and politics aren’t my catnip, but your mileage may vary! This one is a little over 200 pages, so not quite novel length.

Compared to love, politics is easy…

Union organizer Millie Frank’s world isn’t filled with cocktails and nightclubs…until she’s turned into an unwitting minor celebrity. As if being part of a hostage situation wasn’t traumatizing enough, now her face is splashed across the news. But Millie’s got fresher wounds to nurse—like being shot down by the arrogant bad boy she stupidly hit on.

Parker Beckett will do whatever it takes to close a deal for the senate majority leader, including selling out union labor. Charming and smart on the surface, he’s also cynical and uncommitted—an asset on the Hill. But something about Millie has stuck with him and when negotiations bring her to his office, Parker breaks his own rules and asks her out.

Parker can’t understand how Millie has retained her idealism in a place like D.C. Millie can’t believe what Parker’s willing to sacrifice in order to pass a budget. But as they navigate their political differences, what grows between them looks a lot like a relationship…and maybe even a little like love.

  • Dine With Me

Dine With Me by Layla Reyne

Dine With Me by Layla Reyne is $1.99! This is an M/M romance with an opposites attract pairing and a road trip. Love me a foodie romance. This is also a standalone! I feel like Reyne’s romances are well-read here at the Bitchery. Do you have a favorite?

    Life never tasted so good.

Miller Sykes’s meteoric rise to award-winning chef is the stuff of culinary dreams, but it’s all crashing down around him. He’s been given a diagnosis that could cost him something even more precious than his life: his sense of taste. Rather than risk the very thing that defines him, Miller embarks on a last tour of his favorite meals while he still can.

But there’s a catch: he needs a financial backer to make it happen, and he doesn’t want anyone to know he’s sick.

Dr. Clancy Rhodes has two weeks to come to terms with putting aside oncology to work at his father’s thriving plastic surgery practice. When the opportunity to travel with a Michelin-starred chef presents itself, the foodie in him can’t believe it. It doesn’t hurt that Miller’s rugged good looks are exactly Clancy’s cup of joe.

As Clancy and Miller travel from coast to coast and indulge in everything from dive bars to the most decadent of culinary experiences, they’re suddenly sharing a lot more than delicious meals. Sparks fly as they bond over their love of flavors and the pressures of great expectations. But when Miller’s health takes a turn for the worse, Clancy must convince him he’s more—so much more—than just his taste buds. And that together, they can win a battle that once seemed hopeless.

  1. KarenF says:

I read Special Interests when it first came out (which I think was pre-2016 election) and really loved it then. I’m not sure how well it would hold up now, but I thought the whole series was great. Because of this book, Elizabeth Barry became an auto-buy author for me, and I haven’t regretted it (I loved her historical space program series too).

  2. chacha1 says:

‘Dine With Me’ is actually my favorite so far from Layla Reyne. Her romantic-suspense title have a very action-movie quality about them, and this one has a very road-trip-movie quality; if you liked the movie ‘Chef,’ you will like this book.

  3. Kareni says:

Currently free, Pipe and Pestle: A Sam Archer Novel
by Joseph Weinberg. This is urban fantasy.

  4. Katie says:

Silver Silence by Nalini Singh and Deceptions by Kelley Armstrong are both 1.99.

  5. Lisa F says:

I’ve read all of these but Special Interests and they’re all quite good.

  6. regencyfan93 says:

I listened to the audiobook of Dine With Me. Twice so far, and enjoyed it both times.

  7. wingednike says:

The first 3 books in Rachel Reid’s Game Changers series are on sale as a set for $2.99 on Nook.

  8. Jen says:

I stopped reading dalliances and devotion after the first few chapters. The writing seemed juvenile. Does it get any better?

  9. Sara says:

Emma Barry an auto-buy for me. Special Interests is really good–the characters are complex, the romance intelligent. I also highly highly recommend the novella A Midnight Clear by Barry and Genevieve Turner.
