If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.
Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), but we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.
We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as quickly as the big five.
As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments.

Released: April 16, 2021 by EE Ottoman
Genre: Historical: American, LGBTQIA, RomanceNew York, 1949

Aarya: I’ve enjoyed Ottoman’s voice in the past and I’m very excited for this upcoming historical (in case you can’t tell from the blurb: I believe this is a poly romance with three trans MCs).

Cinnamon Roll
Author: Anna Zabo
Released: April 20, 2021
Genre: Contemporary Romance, LGBTQIA, Romance
Series: Bold Brew #6This cinnamon roll has plenty of bite!
Maxime Demers has had an eye on Tom Cedric for a while, watching him flit from one awful man to another. So when Tom pins an ad to the community cork board at Bold Brew, Max can’t resist reading it. Tom’s looking for a play partner—someone who’s not a jerk—and Max knows he could give Tom what he needs. But first he’ll have to get the man to talk to him.
Tom Cedric thinks Max is way out of his league. He’s handsome, intelligent, speaks a billion languages, and can make a person kneel with a single look—too damn good for someone like Tom. But he can’t resist the temptation to talk to the man he’s had a crush on since the moment he laid eyes on him.
The connection between them is immediate, hot, and tempting, and when Max needs a replacement helper for an impact demo he’s giving, Tom jumps at the chance. A demo should be safe, right? A few hours. Clothing on. No stakes. Neither man is prepared when that spark ignites, and Tom is absolutely unprepared to discover the sweet man behind those dominating looks.
Cinnamon Roll is a stand-alone novel in the Bold Brew shared universe, centered around an inclusive coffee shop in a fictional small city. Each steaming hot coffee shop romance can be enjoyed alone, but collect all ten for the most fun!
This twist on a second-chance romance is 90,000-word cup of steaming hot scenes, a dusting of angst, plenty of fluff, and a guaranteed happy ending!
Aarya: This is part of a self-published, multi-author series centering around a coffee shop. I’ve heard complaints that the series worldbuilding isn’t totally consistent across the books, but this blurb looks great.

The Galaxy, and the Ground Within
Author: Becky Chambers
Released: April 20, 2021 by Harper Voyager
Genre: LGBTQIA, Science Fiction/Fantasy
Series: Wayfarers #4With no water, no air, and no native life, the planet Gora is unremarkable. The only thing it has going for it is a chance proximity to more popular worlds, making it a decent stopover for ships traveling between the wormholes that keep the Galactic Commons connected. If deep space is a highway, Gora is just your average truck stop.
At the Five-Hop One-Stop, long-haul spacers can stretch their legs (if they have legs, that is), and get fuel, transit permits, and assorted supplies. The Five-Hop is run by an enterprising alien and her sometimes helpful child, who work hard to provide a little piece of home to everyone passing through.
When a freak technological failure halts all traffic to and from Gora, three strangers—all different species with different aims—are thrown together at the Five-Hop. Grounded, with nothing to do but wait, the trio—an exiled artist with an appointment to keep, a cargo runner at a personal crossroads, and a mysterious individual doing her best to help those on the fringes—are compelled to confront where they’ve been, where they might go, and what they are, or could be, to each other.
Shana: Just when we need it, the most comforting sci-fi series in the universe is back!

Reichert.
For Sabrina Monroe, moving back home to the Wisconsin Dells–the self-described Waterpark Capital of the World–means returning to the Monroe family curse: the women in her family can see spirits who come to them for help with unfinished business. The one exception has always been Molly, a bubbly rom-com loving ghost, who stuck by Sabrina’s side all through her lonely childhood.
Her personal life starts looking up when Ray, the new local restaurateur, invites Sabrina to his supper club, where he flirts with her over his famous Brandy Old-Fashioneds. He’s charming and handsome, but Sabrina tells herself she doesn’t have time for romance–she needs to focus on finding a job. Except the longer she’s in the Dells, the harder it is to resist her feelings for Ray. Who can turn down a cute guy with a fondness for rescue dogs and an obsession with perfecting his fried cheese curds recipe?
When the Dells starts to feel like home for the first time and with Ray in her corner, Sabrina begins to realize that she can make a difference and help others wherever she is.

An Earl, the Girl, and a Toddler
Author: Vanessa Riley
Released: April 27, 2021 by Zebra Books
Genre: Historical: European, Romance
Series: Rogues and Remarkable Women #2A witty and moving story from the acclaimed author of A Duke, the Lady, and a Baby, about the lengths to which a woman will go for the love of her child…and the love of a man who knows her worth. Breaking with traditional Regency rules and customs, Vanessa Riley pens an unforgettable story perfect for fans of Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton, Evie Dunmore, and Eloisa James looking for something fresh and stirring!
Masterminded by the ton’s most clever countess, the secret society The Widow’s Grace helps ill-treated widows regain their reputations, their families, and even find true love again–or perhaps for the very first time…
Surviving a shipwreck en route to London from Jamaica was just the start of personal maid Jemina St. Maur’s nightmare. Suffering from amnesia, she was separated from anyone who might know her and imprisoned in Bedlam. She was freed only because barrister Daniel Thackery, Lord Ashbrook, was convinced to betray the one thing he holds dear: the law. Desperate to unearth her true identity, Jemina’s only option is to work outside the law–which means staying steps ahead of the formidable Daniel, no matter how strongly she is drawn to him…
Married only by proxy, now widowed by shipwreck, Daniel is determined to protect his little stepdaughter, Charlotte, from his family’s scandalous reputation. That’s why he has dedicated himself not just to the law, but to remaining as proper and upstanding–and boring–as can be. But the closer he becomes to the mysterious, alluring Jemina, the more Daniel is tempted to break the very rules to which he’s dedicated his life. As ruthless adversaries close in, will the truth require him and Jemina to sacrifice their one chance at happiness?
Sarah: A secret society of widows? Hello!
Claudia: The heroine in this book was in the first book in this series and was great, so I’m very curious!
Catherine: I have to admit, it was the cover that grabbed me first, but this looks like an interesting use of the amnesia trope.

Released: April 27, 2021 by Zebra Books
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Romance
Series: Keys to Love #2Key West is the ideal backdrop for the summer read you need! Perfect for fans of Abby Jimenez, Jasmine Guillory, and Jen DeLuca, this gorgeous and stirring new love story from the author of Island Affair will touch your heart…
Award-winning photographer Alejandro Miranda hasn’t been home to Key West in years–not since he left to explore broader horizons with his papi’s warning echoing in his ears. He wouldn’t be heading there now if it wasn’t for an injury requiring months of recuperation. The drama of a prodigal son returning to his familia is bad enough, but coming home to the island paradise also means coming face to face with the girl he left behind–the one who was supposed to be by his side all along…
Anamaría Navarro was shattered when Alejandro took off without her. Traveling the world was their plan, not just his. But after her father’s heart attack, there was no way she could leave–not even for the man she loved. Now ensconced in the family trade as a firefighter and paramedic, with a side hustle as a personal trainer, Anamaría is dismayed that just the sight of Alejandro is enough to rekindle the flame she’s worked years to put out. And as motherly meddling pushes them together, the heat of their attraction only climbs higher. Can they learn to trust again, before the Key West sun sets on their chance at happiness?
Aarya: I didn’t love the first book in the series, but I did like what I saw of the Anchored Hearts heroine. I’ve enjoyed Oliveras’s voice in the past so I hope Anchored Hearts is a better fit for me!

The End of Men
Author: Christina Sweeney-Baird
Released: April 27, 2021 by G.P. Putnam's Sons
Genre: Science Fiction/FantasySet in a world where a virus stalks our male population, The End of Men is an electrifying and unforgettable debut from a remarkable new talent that asks: what would our world truly look like without men?
Only men carry the virus. Only women can save us all.
The year is 2025, and a mysterious virus has broken out in Scotland–a lethal illness that seems to affect only men. When Dr. Amanda MacLean reports this phenomenon, she is dismissed as hysterical. By the time her warning is heeded, it is too late. The virus becomes a global pandemic–and a political one. The victims are all men. The world becomes alien–a women’s world.
What follows is the immersive account of the women who have been left to deal with the virus’s consequences, told through first-person narratives. Dr. MacLean; Catherine, a social historian determined to document the human stories behind the “male plague”; intelligence analyst Dawn, tasked with helping the government forge a new society; and Elizabeth, one of many scientists desperately working to develop a vaccine. Through these women and others, we see the uncountable ways the absence of men has changed society, from the personal–the loss of husbands and sons–to the political–the changes in the workforce, fertility, and the meaning of family.
In The End of Men, Christina Sweeney-Baird turns the unimaginable into the unforgettable.
Shana: I’m hoping this has a World War Z + Ammonite feel.

Fugitive Telemetry
Author: Martha Wells
Released: April 27, 2021 by Tor.com
Genre: Novella, Science Fiction/Fantasy
Series: The Murderbot Diaries #6No, I didn’t kill the dead human. If I had, I wouldn’t dump the body in the station mall.
When Murderbot discovers a dead body on Preservation Station, it knows it is going to have to assist station security to determine who the body is (was), how they were killed (that should be relatively straightforward, at least), and why (because apparently that matters to a lot of people—who knew?)
Yes, the unthinkable is about to happen: Murderbot must voluntarily speak to humans!
Again!
Sarah: New Murderbot new Murderbot new Murderbot! It’s expensive for a novella but if you’d like more Murderbot to read and re-read, more mystery solving, and more development of Murderbot figuring out how to deal with humans (and ugh, feelings) you’ll be very pleased with this one.
Shana: Honestly, I’m still a book behind in the Murderbot series, but that won’t keep me from making grabby hands at the new installment

Witches Steeped in Gold by Ciannon Smart drops on April 20. “This Jamaican-inspired fantasy debut about two enemy witches who must enter into a deadly alliance to take down a common enemy has the twisted cat-and-mouse of Killing Eve with the richly imagined fantasy world of Furyborn and Ember in the Ashes.”
Unfortunately all “The End of Men” makes me think of is
Scientist: Oh no! All the men are gone!
Trans men: Stop telling everyone we’re dead!
Maybe it will be good! Maybe the author has already thought of this and it’s just not in the blurb (I know authors don’t get to make marketing decisions, usually). I just feel like media properties with sex-specific diseases always end up like…forgetting trans and intersex people exist.
I’m really excited about several of these books coming out soon. Murderbot, the new Cooper and the Reese Ryan book look like fun reads.
I also have Jenna Collett’s new book, Shatter the Dark, on my list. It is the 4th book in her fairy tale mystery/romance series and it comes out on April 19th.
And of course the new Thrawn novel comes out on the 27th. I am ready for some new adventure in a galaxy far, far away with my favorite blue man.
fyi, the Courtney Milan was originally scheduled to be released in February but has been postponed until April 20.
@1esk19 I had similar thoughts about The Power…
THE END OF MEN reminds me of James Tiptree Jr.’s famous 1976 SF novella, “Houston, Houston, Do You Read?” about three male astronauts who experience a malfunction while in space and find themselves 500 years in the future—in a world without men. (Tiptree was a woman who used a male pseudonym—which undoubtedly made publication easier back in the day.)
Oooh, It Takes A Thief is right up my alley. I love heist books. I hope there is a lot of heisty heists going on! And romance of course.
The Companion, Cinnamon Roll (love Anna Zabo), the Milan, Something About You, It Takes a Thief, Huntress in red, Dial A for Aunties, Anchored Hearts, AEAGAAT, Feathered Flames, and Kindred spirits Supper Club are all on my TBR pile.
Until Fugitive Telemetry arrives on my doorstep, I’m pretending it doesn’t exist. It’s the only way I can cope.
@Aarya, I’ve actually read The Jaguar Knight and it was excellent! I think Slay comes a long way, both literally and figuratively, to earn being worthy of being the hero.
Also very excited for Courtney Milan’s newest, but I don’t think I’ve actually read any of the previous in the series… Should I try to binge now?
And can’t wait for Priscilla Oliveras’s Anchored Hearts! Island Affair was SO good!
I’m really hoping Anna Zabo’s “Cinnamon Roll” will come out on some platform besides Amazon. I refuse to buy from them but sometimes it’s damn hard!
The second in Erin Satie’s Sweetness and Light series Book of Love is out on 4/20, almost 3 years after Bed of Flowers was published. I’ve been waiting for this one for quite a while.
Grimoires and Where to Find Them – the 6th book in The Case Files of Henri Davenforth by Honor Raconteur comes out at the end of the month
I wonder what made Courtney Milan decide to lean in on the “Asians are math geniuses” stereotype?
@Hope: Maybe because Milan is Asian and also a math genius.
@Amanda: I am aware of both these facts. Milan’s Asian heritage is one of the reasons I have looked to her with hope for moving Asian representation in romance – historicals particularly – forward. Perhaps you can imagine how excited I was when I saw the cover for this work and then how my heart sank when I read the blurb and found this same old stereotype.
While I haven’t read the book, it’s very possible Milan could be drawing on her own experiences and upending the stereotype. And, given the romances I’ve read by Milan in the past, I feel optimistic in how she’d handle it. I also think this is different than a white author writing such a stereotype, rather than someone who has lived experience within the stereotype.
@Amanda: I haven’t read it, either, and I’m not going to. You’ve been very effective in dismissing my concerns. Kudos.
Muderbot is the savior we need, even if we don’t deserve it’s snarky sassiness. Can’t wait!
Re: “The end of men” – see also Joanna Russ’ “The Female Man”, and Tiptree’s “The Screw Fly Solution”. Transpeople don’t come up in either, but these works are 40-50 years old.
@ Hope
What you call “dismissing your concerns” looks like expressing a different view to me. YMMV, of course. I plan to read the book and judge for myself.
