  • The Brass Queen

The Brass Queen by Elizabeth Chatsworth

The Brass Queen by Elizabeth Chatsworth is 99c! I mentioned this on a recent Hide Your Wallet because I was very interested in the heroine. I haven’t picked it up yet, but for less than a $1, you can bet it’s going on my Kindle as soon as possible.

She knows a liar when she sees one.
He knows a fraud when he meets one.

In a steam-powered world, Miss Constance Haltwhistle is the last in a line of blue-blooded rogues. Selling firearms under her alias, the “Brass Queen,” she has kept her baronial estate’s coffers full. But when US spy J. F. Trusdale saves her from assassins, she’s pulled into a search for a scientist with an invisibility serum. As royal foes create an invisible army to start a global war, Constance and Trusdale must learn to trust each other. If they don’t, the world as they know it will disappear before their eyes.

If you like the Parasol Protectorate or the Invisible Library series, you’ll love this gaslamp fantasy—a rambunctious romantic romp that will have you both laughing out loud and wishing you owned all of Miss Haltwhistle’s armaments.

  • Gentleman Jim

    Gentleman Jim by Mimi Matthews

RECOMMENDED: Gentleman Jim by Mimi Matthews is $1.99 at Amazon and $3.99 elsewhere! Lara wrote a Lightning Review for this one and gave it an A:

I love a good yarn (in all senses of the word) and this book delivers a belter. This is an historical romance that feels fresh, vibrant and made me sing the Good Book Noise.

From USA Today bestselling author Mimi Matthews comes a swashbuckling tale of Regency era romance and revenge.

    She couldn’t forget…

Wealthy squire’s daughter Margaret Honeywell was always meant to marry her neighbor, Frederick Burton-Smythe, but it’s bastard-born Nicholas Seaton who has her heart. Raised alongside her on her father’s estate, Nicholas is the rumored son of notorious highwayman Gentleman Jim. When Fred frames him for theft, Nicholas escapes into the night, vowing to find his legendary sire. But Nicholas never returns. A decade later, he’s long been presumed dead.

    He wouldn’t forgive…

After years spent on the continent, John Beresford, Viscount St. Clare has finally come home to England. Tall, blond, and dangerous, he’s on a mission to restore his family’s honor. If he can mete out a bit of revenge along the way, so much the better. But he hasn’t reckoned for Maggie Honeywell. She’s bold and beautiful—and entirely convinced he’s someone else.

As danger closes in, St. Clare is torn between love and vengeance. Will he sacrifice one to gain the other? Or with a little luck—and a lot of daring—will he find a way to have them both?

  • Pairing Off

    Pairing Off by Elizabeth Harmon

RECOMMENDED: Pairing Off by Elizabeth Harmon is 99c This is the first book in a romance series with figure skating. Redheadedgirl gave it a B+:

What really stands out is that it’s clear that Harmon is a skating fan, and either has skated or has put in the work to know what things are: she knows the names of the jumps and the mechanics and clearly understands the facets of training that aren’t just ice time. She isn’t just like, “Um, there’s skates right? And ice? You jump and spin and that’s all you know need to know, right? I’m good.”

American figure skater Carrie Parker’s Winter Games dreams were dashed when her philandering partner caused one of the greatest scandals in skating history. Blacklisted from competing in the United States, her career is over…until she receives a mysterious invitation and is paired with the most infuriating, talented—and handsome—skater she’s ever met.

Russian champion Anton Belikov knows sacrifice. He gave up a normal life and any hope of a meaningful relationship to pursue his dream. And he’s come close—with a silver medal already under his belt, the next stop is the gold. All he needs is a partner. While he’s never forgotten the young American skater he seduced one long-ago night in Amsterdam, he never expected to be confronted with their past…never mind share the ice with her.

When what starts as a publicity stunt grows into something real, Carrie and Anton’s partnership will test their loyalties to family, country and each other. With only a few months to train for the competition of a lifetime, can they master technique and their emotions, or will they lose their footing and fall victim to the heartaches of their pasts?

  • An Extraordinary Union

An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole is $1.99! This is a KDD today. Simply put, GET THIS BOOK. Sarah completely loved it:

First, yes, you should absolutely read this book immediately, if you haven’t already. There is so much happening in the conflict within each of the protagonists, between the protagonists, and around them and their allies and enemies, I can’t possibly discuss all of it, but please know: if you are a reader (and why else would you be here, right?) this book is a marvelous, intelligent, respectful, breathtaking treat for your brain.

As the Civil War rages between the states, a courageous pair of spies plunge fearlessly into a maelstrom of ignorance, deceit, and danger, combining their unique skills to alter the course of history and break the chains of the past . . .

Elle Burns is a former slave with a passion for justice and an eidetic memory. Trading in her life of freedom in Massachusetts, she returns to the indignity of slavery in the South—to spy for the Union Army.

Malcolm McCall is a detective for Pinkerton’s Secret Service. Subterfuge is his calling, but he’s facing his deadliest mission yet—risking his life to infiltrate a Rebel enclave in Virginia.

Two undercover agents who share a common cause—and an undeniable attraction—Malcolm and Elle join forces when they discover a plot that could turn the tide of the war in the Confederacy’s favor. Caught in a tightening web of wartime intrigue, and fighting a fiery and forbidden love, Malcolm and Elle must make their boldest move to preserve the Union at any cost—even if it means losing each other . . .

  1. Ren Benton says:

MUFFINS & BISCUITS by Heidi Gibson is $1.99. I’ve gotten that much value out of the piña colada muffins alone (without the rum, but you do you!), and the sour cream-coffee cake muffins have also been a hit.

  2. chacha1 says:

I have read all of these except ‘Brass Queen’ and can recommend. 🙂

  3. Darlynne says:

AN EXTRAORDINARY UNION and GENTLEMAN JIM are two of my favorite books, for different reasons but definitely for the characters. Highly recommend both.

  4. Darlynne says:

THE EIGHT by Katherine Neville is $1.99 at Amazon. For those of you who haven’t jumped on this wild ride yet, it’s a great escape through history into the search for Charlemagne’s chess set and the power it wields. I read this so many times years ago and can’t say if it holds up today, but just seeing the title makes me smile.

  5. Peggy says:

Scavenge the Stars by Tara Sim is $1.99 at Amazon.
YA, Queer Count of Monte Cristo! (Which just sounds awesome to me!) 🙂

  6. GradStudentEscapist says:

If you like hockey m/m, Rachel Reid’s Game Changers series box set is 2.99 on Amazon (US) right now. Book 2 is my favorite book ever, book 4 is okay IMO but people seem to really like it, and I haven’t read books 1 and 3 but sounds like a steal 🙂

  7. Stefanie Magura says:

Gentleman Jim was $3.99 when I bought it from Amazon, so I think that’s the normal price.

  8. marjorie says:

Can highly recommend the Cole and the Harmon.

Two very different books! But both authors have so clearly done their research, put in the hours. But they don’t let exposition overtake their storytelling. They don’t feel the need to show us how hard they’ve worked or how much they know (COUGH COUGH DIANA GABALDON); they’re both terrific economical narrative-driven writers who write tight as well as swoony.

  9. Another Anne says:

Well, this makes a dent in my March book budget!

Also, I second Darlynne about The Eight, which I read for the first time in the 1990s. I have not read it recently, but I think it will hold up, since the “present day” portions are set in the 1970s, when OPEC was a huge force in the world and there were “computing centers” that stretched over floors of buildings. I’d love to see it adapted for tv — as a multipart series.

  10. Ruth L says:

@Darlynne I love The Eight! Sometimes the plot doesn’t even make total sense, but it’s so much fun, who cares (this from the woman who usually hates plots that don’t make sense)? I thought her other books were disappointing in comparison.

@Another Anne — you’re right, it would make a great multipart series, like Queen’s Gambit. Since it was a bestseller, someone probably has the rights and is sitting on them.

  11. Lisa F says:

The Mathews is a solid C for me – loved the rest of these!

  12. Georgina says:

If I Never Met You, the newest Mhairi McFarlane, is on sale on Amazon AU and UK but perhaps not elsewhere. I’ve enjoyed several of her previous books and am looking forward to this one.

  13. spinster.revival says:

Well I just bought The Eight thanks to everyone above, and it looks great. I’ve never heard of it but saw the phrase “feminist Indiana Jones” and am in. Thanks SBs!

Also I usually would just check it out from the library first, but since it’s over 700 pages I need to take my time; good deal for two dollars. 🙂

  14. trefoil says:

Love Lettering is now on KU in Canada!

  15. Sydneysider says:

The Harmon and the Cole are both great reads and I also recommend them.
