  • An Extraordinary Union

An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole is $2.99! This could expire ASAP. Simply put, GET THIS BOOK. Sarah completely loved it:

First, yes, you should absolutely read this book immediately, if you haven’t already. There is so much happening in the conflict within each of the protagonists, between the protagonists, and around them and their allies and enemies, I can’t possibly discuss all of it, but please know: if you are a reader (and why else would you be here, right?) this book is a marvelous, intelligent, respectful, breathtaking treat for your brain.

As the Civil War rages between the states, a courageous pair of spies plunge fearlessly into a maelstrom of ignorance, deceit, and danger, combining their unique skills to alter the course of history and break the chains of the past . . .

Elle Burns is a former slave with a passion for justice and an eidetic memory. Trading in her life of freedom in Massachusetts, she returns to the indignity of slavery in the South—to spy for the Union Army.

Malcolm McCall is a detective for Pinkerton’s Secret Service. Subterfuge is his calling, but he’s facing his deadliest mission yet—risking his life to infiltrate a Rebel enclave in Virginia.

Two undercover agents who share a common cause—and an undeniable attraction—Malcolm and Elle join forces when they discover a plot that could turn the tide of the war in the Confederacy’s favor. Caught in a tightening web of wartime intrigue, and fighting a fiery and forbidden love, Malcolm and Elle must make their boldest move to preserve the Union at any cost—even if it means losing each other . . .

  • Chef Sugarlips

    Chef Sugarlips by Tawna Fenske

Chef Sugarlips by Tawna Fenske is 99c! I’ve read other books in this series and they’re fun, quick reads. This one in particular was recommended in my romance book club and I’m always a sucker for foodie elements in my romance. And yes, the model’s head does look detached.

Sean Bracelyn can whip up a saffron-laced lobster risotto in his sleep, but relationships? That’s one recipe he hasn’t nailed. Not that he has time, between launching a new restaurant and building a luxury resort with his awkwardly-blended family. But when his dream girl nearly knocks him unconscious with a dead turkey, it’s all Sean can do to keep his eyes on the gazpacho and off Amber King’s perfect curves.

Amber’s done with guys propping her on a pedestal. Transforming her family’s reindeer ranch into a country chic wedding venue is consuming enough, and the last thing she needs is an extra serving of love drama. So what is it about the stupid-sexy chef that gets her desires bubbling like a pot of hot spaghetti?

Keeping their distance is tough enough before Sean and Amber get tossed together by wacky weddings, lingerie mishaps, and a surly three-legged cat. When Sean’s mom shows up to dish out huge helpings of family drama, a big secret threatens to spread faster than a kitchen fire.

Can Sean and Amber find the right blend of sugar and spice, or will love fall flat as a burnt soufflé?

  • A Morbid Taste for Bones

A Morbid Taste for Bones by Ellis Peters

RECOMMENDED: A Morbid Taste for Bones by Ellis Peters is $1.99 and part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. This is book one in The Chronicles of Brother Cadfael series, which I remember Sarah enjoying last year (or maybe the year before – what is time?). Here’s what she said:

This book and the next few books of the series got me through the scariest parts of early Quarantimes.

On an expedition to acquire a saint’s remains, Brother Cadfael instead finds intrigue and murder

It is 1137, and the ambitious head of Shrewsbury Abbey wishes to acquire the remains of Saint Winifred for the glory of his Benedictine order. Brother Cadfael is part of the expedition sent to the saint’s final resting place in Wales, where he finds the villagers divided over the Benedictines’ quest.

When the leading opponent to moving the grave is shot dead with a mysterious arrow, some believe Winifred herself delivered the blow. Brother Cadfael knows that an earthly hand did the killing. But he doesn’t know that his plan to root out a murderer may dig up a case of love and justice, where the waves of sin may be scandal—or his own ruin.

  • The Dark Protectors Boxed Set

The Dark Protectors Boxed Set by Rebecca Zanetti

The Dark Protectors Boxed Set by Rebecca Zanetti is $2.99! If you’ve ever been tempted to try this series, this is a pretty good deal that includes three full-length books and a novella. Are there any fans of the series in the Bitchery? Every time we feature one of the books on sale, I’m always really curious about them.

Don’t miss the first four volumes of the unforgettable Dark Protectors series: Fated, Claimed, Tempted, Hunted

Driven by prophecy, the Dark Protectors are male vampires, fearless and born to mate with human females—for eternity. Talen Kayrs is on a mission, and once Cara Paulsen takes him as her mate, nothing can stop the force of his desire…

Vampire king Dage Kayrs knows that when he encounters the brilliant geneticist Emma Paulsen, the power of their coming together will never be decoded…

When bodyguard Max Petrovsky is sent to rescue Sarah Pringle from the evil Kurjans chasing her, he’s willing to go far beyond the call of duty…

It’s taken over a century for ultimate soldier Connor Kayrs to consummate his union with the powerful witch Moira Dunne, but the time has come…

  1. Carrie G says:

I’ve read one popular book by Alyssa Cole and was not impressed, so I’ve been very hesitant about trying another one. Decisions, decisions.

Also, the Cadfael books seem to rotate through the KDD slots, as well, almost one every day or so, so if you like them (I do) watch that space for more of the series on sale.

I’d love to hear what people think of the Zanetti books. I’ve read two romantic suspense titles by her and enjoyed them, but haven’t picked up this series yet.

  2. Kit says:

Got the dark protectors box set a while ago. Can’t get past a few chapters of book one as male MC was a total alpha jerk. Put me right off reading the rest, a shame it looked promising.

  3. TN says:

The Dark Protectors’ box image is Cover Snark bait: that guy’s body is … mmm… problematic.

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Speaking as a Cover Queen, I have to say those Dark Protector covers are usually extremely helpful in pointing out the cover model’s crotch by having the Dark Protectors logo hovering right over it. However, on the cover above, the logo has been shifted to the left, but the cover designer has placed an elaborate L (I think) right where they want our eyes to be!

  5. Darlynne says:

Chef Sugarlips is going to get hurt wearing just an apron in a commercial kitchen. Unsafe and unsanitary.

The torso, etc., on The Dark Protectors cover is alive and something wants to get out.

I reserve all my love for Brother Cadfael. As with any 20-book series, there are winners and not-so-much-winning, but he is a hopeful rock in all insurrections.

  6. Emily C says:

@Carrie G- I started one Alyssa Cole contemporary and it just didn’t work for me either. However… I just read An Extraordinary Union after letting it sit on my TBR for three years and it was wonderful! I can’t recommend it enough, it was heartfelt and dramatic but also incredibly hopeful. If you like historicals, then I would definitely suggest giving it a try for $2.99.

  7. Carrie G says:

@Emily C Thank you! I checked and my library has it, so I think I’ll go that way.

  8. Juli Thompson says:

_A Morbid Taste for Bones_ is loosely based on the true story of how St. Winefride’s relics were translated to Shrewsbury. The Abbey Church is still there, albeit only part of the structure has survived since medieval times. Ellis Peters was active in conservation efforts, spurring the revival of the Guild of St Windefride, which sadly earns to be dormant again. The church’s website is https://www.shrewsburyabbey.com/

Sorry for typos – I’m on my phone and autocorrect hates me.

  9. Jenny says:

I know I complained about the original Fenske covers, but the new ones make me pine for the originals (especially Mark’s book – I didn’t realize how much the original Mark model did it for me until I saw the new one.) Sigh.

  10. Msb says:

Every Alyssa Cole I read makes me a bigger fan. Very keen to read her historicals.

I recently reread almost all the Cadfael novels (I hit the COVID wall and needed cheering up). As Darlynne says above, they’re not all equally good. But they are solid mysteries, with a romance in each book, very true to the period (as far as I know), and very kind-hearted. Strongly recommended to cozy fans who like romance elements.

  11. chacha1 says:

‘An Extraordinary Union’ is a really strong book, I think. Haven’t connected with Cole’s contemporaries but will always appreciate her for this.

Cadfael – there is some lovely, lyrical writing in those books. Also some righteous women. Only read a few so far but especially in this time of not being able to go anywhere, the sense of being in a different place (and a truly different time) is soothing.

  12. A Reader in Canada says:

Nominating Chef Sugarlips for a Cover Snark. That image is surely perfect snark material!

  13. Jennifer H says:

Alyssa Cole’s contempories are a bit hit or miss for me, but the Loyal League books are really good

  14. Georgina says:

    Another one for Cadfael!

I just started re-reading the series a few weeks ago, after reading them all in the ’90s, and have been thrilled to find how well they hold up. I’m hoping to meander my way through them all by the end of the year.

  15. Kris Bock says:

I also reread the Cadfael series fairly recently. The books have a leisurely feel, but in a way that lets meet sink into the story and relax, when I’ve been impatient with a lot of books in recent years, for some reason.

  16. Sydneysider says:

I haven’t read any of Alyssa Cole’s contemporaries, but The Loyal League historical trilogy is superb. I read all 3 and they’re excellent and worth picking up, especially for $2.99! There’s drama, tension, romance, pretty much everything in a historical setting that is not Regency England. Strongly, strongly recommend.

  17. Jennifer B says:

Alas, the Alyssa Cole book is no longer on sale on Apple. One of these days, I’ll figure out their sale window.

    Cadfael! That takes me back.

  18. Jennifer B says:

(sees timestamp on my last post)

    Ahhhh….Eastern Standard Time. Nevermind. (I’m a dork.)

  19. Lisa F says:

Some excellent picks! Fenske really is fun, the Cole is excellent and I have a soft spot for the Cadfael series.
