  • Gods of Jade and Shadow

Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

RECOMMENDED: Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is $2.99! Aarya wrote a Lightning Review of this one and gave it a B+, but mentions it is definitely not a romance:

There’s a touch of melancholy and longing that permeates the entire novel, but it ends with a premonition of hope. That’s all I can want in any fantasy novel.

The Mayan God of Death sends a young woman on a harrowing, life-changing journey in this dark fairy tale inspired by Mexican folklore, for readers of The Song of Achilles and Uprooted.

Here we shall begin to tell a story: a tale of a throne lost, of monsters and magic. A tale of gods and of the shadow realm. But this, our story, it begins in our world, in the land of mortals.

It begins with a woman. For this story, it is her story. It begins with her.

The Jazz Age is in full swing, but Casiopea Tun is too busy cleaning the floors of her wealthy grandfather’s house to listen to any fast tunes. Nevertheless, she dreams of a life far from her dusty, small town in southern Mexico. A life she can call her own.

Yet this new life seems as distant as the stars, until the day she finds a curious wooden box in her grandfather’s room. She opens it–and accidentally frees the spirit of the Mayan God of Death, who requests her help in recovering his throne from his treacherous brother. Failure will mean Casiopea’s demise, but success could make her dreams come true.

In the company of the strangely alluring god and armed with her wits, Casiopea begins an adventure that will take her on a cross-country odyssey, from the jungles of Yucatán to the bright lights of Mexico City–and deep into the darkness of the Mayan underworld.

Mixing the excitement of the Roaring Twenties with Prehispanic mythology, Gods of Jade and Shadow is a vivid, wildly imaginative historical fantasy.

  • Lovecraft Country

    Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff

RECOMMENDEDLovecraft Country by Matt Ruff is $2.99! Did anyone else watch the HBO series? I was…disappointed. Carrie really loved this piece of fantasy horror and it earned an A grade:

Lovecraft Country is sad, and scary, and funny, and exciting. It’s also fist-pumping-in-the-air awesome. I loved the seamless melding of the magical and the mundane, the tragic and triumphant, the funny and the terrifying.

The critically acclaimed cult novelist makes visceral the terrors of life in Jim Crow America and its lingering effects in this brilliant and wondrous work of the imagination that melds historical fiction, pulp noir, and Lovecraftian horror and fantasy

Chicago, 1954. When his father Montrose goes missing, twenty-two year old Army veteran Atticus Turner embarks on a road trip to New England to find him, accompanied by his Uncle George—publisher of The Safe Negro Travel Guide—and his childhood friend Letitia. On their journey to the manor of Mr. Braithwhite—heir to the estate that owned Atticus’s great grandmother—they encounter both mundane terrors of white America and malevolent spirits that seem straight out of the weird tales George devours.

At the manor, Atticus discovers his father in chains, held prisoner by a secret cabal named the Order of the Ancient Dawn—led by Samuel Braithwhite and his son Caleb—which has gathered to orchestrate a ritual that shockingly centers on Atticus. And his one hope of salvation may be the seed of his—and the whole Turner clan’s—destruction.

A chimerical blend of magic, power, hope, and freedom that stretches across time, touching diverse members of one black family, Lovecraft Country is a devastating kaleidoscopic portrait of racism—the terrifying specter that continues to haunt us today.

  • The Boyfriend Project

The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon

The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon is $2.99! Maya reviewed this one and wasn’t quite sold on the hero. However, if you’ve been waiting for this to have a reduction in price, now’s the time to grab it! I’m excited to see what’s next for Rochon, as she just announced she’ll be writing a Princess Tiana book for Disney-Hyperion.

USA Today bestselling author Farrah Rochon launches a new series about three young women who become friends when the live Tweeting of a disastrous date leads them to discover they’ve all been duped by the same man.

Samiah Brooks never thought she would be “that” girl. But a live tweet of a horrific date just revealed the painful truth: she’s been catfished by a three-timing jerk of a boyfriend. Suddenly Samiah-along with his two other “girlfriends,” London and Taylor — have gone viral online. Now the three new besties are making a pact to spend the next six months investing in themselves. No men, no dating, and no worrying about their relationship status . . .

For once Samiah is putting herself first, and that includes finally developing the app she’s always dreamed of creating. Which is the exact moment she meets the deliciously sexy, honey-eyed Daniel Collins at work. What are the chances? When it comes to love, there’s no such thing as a coincidence. But is Daniel really boyfriend material or is he maybe just a little too good to be true?

  • A Deadly Education

A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik

A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik is $2.99! If you’re unsure about whether to pick up this book, I recommend reading Aarya’s review as well as this Goodreads review and Reddit review to make that decision for yourself. The comments on those outside reviews are insightful, as it contains comments from readers of color about various cultural identities present in the book. Novik has also since apologized and stated that future editions will be changed.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Uprooted and Spinning Silver comes the story of an unwilling dark sorceress who is destined to rewrite the rules of magic.

I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life.

Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans.

I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts, I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, make myself the dark queen of the world.

At least, that’s what the world expects me to do. Most of the other students in here would be delighted if Orion killed me like one more evil thing that’s crawled out of the drains. Sometimes I think they want me to turn into the evil witch they assume I am. The school itself certainly does.

But the Scholomance isn’t getting what it wants from me. And neither is Orion Lake. I may not be anyone’s idea of the shining hero, but I’m going to make it out of this place alive, and I’m not going to slaughter thousands to do it, either.

Although I’m giving serious consideration to just one.

With flawless mastery, Naomi Novik creates a heroine for the ages—a character so sharply realized and so richly nuanced that she will live on in hearts and minds for generations to come.

Thanks so much for these lists. I’m going to buy a book for my daughter, so she’ll likely thank you, too!

  2. Qualisign says:

Caveats aside (as well documented), I really liked Novik’s A DEADLY EDUCATION, possibly because hearts and rainbows and other sparkly things were never the expected outcome. I love to be surprised by resilience in the face of impossible odds and with the bruises visible afterward. Even the ridiculous cliff hanger made me happy as I could not come up with an immediate answer to the dilemma. As with Novik’s other works, there is great world building.

  3. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Esther Perel’s 2009 study of sexuality and domesticity, MATING IN CAPTIVITY, is a KDD for $1.99 today. Although I don’t necessarily agree with all of Perel’s assertions or conclusions, I thought MATING IN CAPTIVITY was a thoughtful and provocative analysis of how “settling down” as a couple sometimes diminishes the frequency of sexy-times (“Is it possible to want what we already have?” she asks)—and how to avoid or change that.

  4. Michelle says:

I really enjoyed A Deadly Education!

I’m eurasian and I was reared by my white parent. While I do think white authors sometimes use mixed race characters to avoid dealing with the non-white side, I thought El’s experiences were treated pretty sensitively and added to the sense that she was very much an outsider.

  5. Denise says:

I absolutely loved Gods of Jade and Shadow! The reviw is pretty accurate, but it was an A for me. Highly recommend!

  6. Susan/DC says:

The cover of Gods of Jade and Shadow made me think of the Julio Cortazar short story “La Noche Boca Arriba”. It takes place in dual realities, contemporary and pre-Columbian Mexico, and is one of my favorite stories ever. Cortazar was a master at creating alternative realities in very few words.

  7. Sydneysider says:

I loved Gods of Jade and Shadow and like @Denise would give it an A. It’s a great fantasy novel.
