Thanks to Ali for sending in this Rec League request that is certainly of interest to the Bitchery:
I just read Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey and I really enjoyed the dirty talk by the hero. Can you recommend any more dirty talking heroes/heroines?
Sarah: Oh, no…I’m the worst person for this question. Dirty talking during sex in books makes the entirety of my internal organs cringe into oblivion. I’m sorry!
Sneezy: Does The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang count?
Amanda: It’s an acquired taste! They’ve already ready and enjoyed Tessa Bailey, who is usually my go-to.
Sarah: There’s a little bit (plus some excellent accessory play) in You Had Me At Hola by Alexis Daria — that said, my reticence over reading dirty talk would skew my perception of what is “a lot” or “a little” so grain of salt, etc.EllenM: Dirty talk is one of those things I tend to not really take much note of either way unless it’s jaw-droppingly, distractingly bad so I have to think about this one for a bit…
Amanda: I already know a few Bitchery commenters who will have this request IN THE BAG. Namely, DiscoDollyDeb. We’re sending up the bat signal!
Shana: I’m with Ellen, I don’t tend to notice dirty talk unless it’s terrible.
Elyse: Didn’t Roni Loren have a book about a phone sex worker?
Tara: Meghan O’Brien’s tend to have some. IIRC, I’m thinking The Night Off and Her Best Friend’s Sister, especially.
Catherine: I actually quite like it, but can hardly think of any examples. Though there is an extremely hot (and rather uncharacteristic!) dirty talking seen in A Wish Upon Jasmine by Laura Florand. ( A | BN | K | AB )
Which romances would you recommend? Give us all the recs!
I’m going to go with Jerry Crozier in ANY OLD DIAMONDS by KJ Charles, who manages dirty talk as she does everything else – with finesse and no cringing at my end *fans self*
@Amanda: I was racing in, even before I saw the Bat signal! Lol. Imho, Kati Wilde writes the best dirty-talking heroes. I know not everyone is on-board with MC romances, but the heroes of all of her Hellfire Riders series can bring the hot-and-nasty (in a good way) pillow talk. I’d especially recommend FAKING IT ALL, BREAKING IT ALL, and LOSING IT ALL (although standard CW/TWs apply). If you don’t want to try MC romances, Wilde’s GOING NOWHERE FAST, SECRET SANTA, and THE KING’S HORRIBLE BRIDE have some great-in-the-dirty-talk-department heroes.
I’d also recommend the work of two writers who are no longer publishing (alas!): Cara McKenna (especially AFTER HOURS and WILLING VICTIM/BRUTAL GAME, although CW/TW for that last duet because of very intense rape role-play); and Jill Sorenson (especially RIDING DIRTY and SHOOTING DIRTY—although, again, these are kinda/sorta MC romances and there are some triggers).
I also thought the five books in Katie Porter’s Vegas Top Guns series had some excellent dirty-talking heroes, but each book does include kink, so read the synopses carefully to be sure you’re on-board.
Ooh, yes, a second vote for KJ Charles. I also recall there being some dirty talk in Tessa Dare’s ANY DUCHESS WILL DO.
I know I have read a few great ones with dirty talk in the recent past, but only the following comes to mind.
Beautiful Bastard and Beautiful Stranger by Christina Lauren
So Steady by Eve Dangerfield
Filthy Gods by R. Scarlett
Off the Clock by Roni Loren
Scarlett Peckham has some great dirty talk in her books, The Earl I Ruined and The Lord I Loved, both immediately came to mind for me.
* The Lord I Left, I knew that didn’t sound right.
And while I’m commenting again anyway, I will second the rec for Eve Dangerfield.
Rose Lerner’s ALL OR NOTHING has some hawt and remarkably filthy dirty talk.
The Billionaire’s Wake-up-Call Girl has some fun dirty talk as a part of role play and phone sex. And for the cross stitchers out there, the heroine’s roommate cross stitches one of the hero’s quotes.
SWEET FILTHY BOY by Christina Lauren
40-LOVE by Olivia Dade
HER NAUGHTY HOLIDAY by Tiffany Reisz
BEAUTIFUL SINNER by Sophie Jordan
ASKING FOR TROUBLE by Tessa Bailey
Is it allowed to mention one of my own things? M/F novella NO MORE WORDS has some dirty talk. 🙂 (author: Alexandra Caluen)
In “Teach Me”, by Olivia Dade, there is a really cute scene where Martin talks dirty to Rose the first time they have sex – one of the many, many reasons why I adore that book. Likewise, there is a funny phone-sex scene between Lila and Ford in “Puppy Christmas” involving some dirty talk.
Seconding both The Billionaire’s Wake-up-call Girl by Annika Martin and Sweet Filthy Boy by Christina Lauren. I also just finished reading Rosie Danan’s The Roommate, which had lots of talking during sexytimes. Maybe it wasn’t technically dirty talk, but it was really affirming and full of the hero admiring the heroine, and I really liked that.
I was thinking Katee Robert or Avery Flynn definitely.
Lauren Dane.
@SB Sarah: “Dirty talking during sex in books makes the entirety of my internal organs cringe into oblivion.” Thank you so much for saying this, I thought I was the only one. The cringe is real.
Love this topic. Ask this more often.
Kristen Ashley- The Honey Series
Samantha Kane – whole catalogue of books
Kate Pearce- Historical Erotic Series whole catalogue
Jasmine Haynes- whole series of books
Opal Carew- Everything of hers is on point- boarderline porny though- just read one of her books and you will get it
Jayne Rylon- whole catalogue
Miranda Neville- whole catalogue
That’s it for now still trying to think of more will get back to ya’ll. This is an excellent start though. Read just about all of these listed here and own quite a bit of them as well.
I’ve been delving into Cara McKenna’s oeuvre and I think McKenna writes good dirty talk.
Charlotte Stein writes very horny dialogue. It can veer a bit into corny territory but contextually it fits.
Seconding Off the Clock by Roni Loren. That was my first Loren and made me a fan.
Charlotte Stein’s “Sweet Agony” and “The Professor” have very intelligent men talking very, very dirty in places. As mentioned above, her writing can be corny and/or pure drama, but it works for me.
In Sierra Simone’s “Priest”, while it’s not precisely dirty, the hero calls the heroine “lamb/little lamb”, and the sheer wickedness of it in context made me squeak out loud.
@HeatherT: I checked it out of the library & you weren’t kidding! Such utterly delicious filthiness! Thanks for the rec!
Great topic! Mostly because I looove dirty talk.
Co-signing Peckham, specifically for “The Duke I Tempted” with a great scene that went from 0 to sizzling on the strength of the filthy talk.
Elizabeth Hoyt needs her mouth washed with soap, god bless her. Wicked Intentions has some good dirty talk, plus The Leopard Prince.
Cecilia Grant doesn’t write anymore but A Gentleman Undone has some good dirty talk as I recall.
Roni Loren – Call on Me is the one about the phone sex worker. It’s a fantastic book – one of my all-time favorites. The entire series is pretty good, but Call on Me is the best one. The dialogue is super hot. You don’t need to read any of the other books in the series first.
Kit Rocha’s Beyond Series
I seem to recall that Lauren Landish’s “Dirty Talk” had some really hot phone sex plus more – the hero is a late night relationship talk show host – and he has some great advice to share!
Gina L Maxwell, Shameless
