  • Borrowed Souls

    Borrowed Souls by Chelsea Mueller

Borrowed Souls by Chelsea Mueller is $1.99! I thought this urban fantasy was incredibly original, though it does suffer from your typical first-book-in-an-urban-fantasy growing pains. But I really loved the heroine!

Callie Delgado always puts family first, and unfortunately her brother knows it. She’s emptied her savings, lost work, and spilled countless tears trying to keep him out of trouble, but now he’s in deeper than ever, and his debt is on Callie’s head. She’s given a choice: do some dirty work for the mob, or have her brother returned to her in tiny pieces.

Renting souls is big business for the religious population of Gem City. Those looking to take part in immoral—or even illegal—activity can borrow someone else’s soul, for a price, and sin without consequence.

To save her brother, Callie needs a borrowed soul, but she doesn’t have anywhere near the money to pay for it. The slimy Soul Charmer is willing to barter, but accepting his offer will force Callie into a dangerous world of magic she isn’t ready for.

With the help of the guarded but undeniably attractive Derek—whose allegiance to the Charmer wavers as his connection to Callie grows—she’ll have to walk a tight line, avoid pissing off the bad guys, all while struggling to determine what her loyalty to her family’s really worth.

Losing her brother isn’t an option. Losing her soul? Maybe.

  • The City of Brass

The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty

The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty is $2.99! This is a fantasy novel that we’ve mentioned on Hide Your Wallet, a previous podcast episode, and in my local book group. It’s also recommended for fans of The Golem and the Jinni, which is a huge favorite here. Have you read it?

Step into The City of Brass, the spellbinding debut from S. A. Chakraborty—an imaginative alchemy of The Golem and the Jinni, The Grace of Kings, and One Thousand and One Nights, in which the future of a magical Middle Eastern kingdom rests in the hands of a clever and defiant young con artist with miraculous healing gifts

Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trade she uses to get by—palm readings, zars, healings—are all tricks, sleights of hand, learned skills; a means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles.

But when Nahri accidentally summons an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to accept that the magical world she thought only existed in childhood stories is real. For the warrior tells her a new tale: across hot, windswept sands teeming with creatures of fire, and rivers where the mythical marid sleep; past ruins of once-magnificent human metropolises, and mountains where the circling hawks are not what they seem, lies Daevabad, the legendary city of brass?a city to which Nahri is irrevocably bound.

In that city, behind gilded brass walls laced with enchantments, behind the six gates of the six djinn tribes, old resentments are simmering. And when Nahri decides to enter this world, she learns that true power is fierce and brutal. That magic cannot shield her from the dangerous web of court politics. That even the cleverest of schemes can have deadly consequences.

After all, there is a reason they say be careful what you wish for . . .

  • Tempt Me with Diamonds

Tempt Me with Diamonds by Jane Feather

Tempt Me with Diamonds by Jane Feather is 99c! This is the first book in the London Jewels series and was released last month. Be warned that many readers say this has a lot of Old Skool qualities, especially for a book published in 2019. If that’s what you’re after, great! But if it’s something you’d rather avoid, that’s cool, too!

Three friends who met at an elite English boarding school take on the town—and the ton—one by one, in this sparkling new series about love, loss, and lustrous gemstones, from New York Times bestselling author Jane Feather…

    A FINE ROMANCE…

Diana Sommerville seems to have it all—beauty, brains, and vast wealth, thanks to her family’s ownership of a diamond mine abroad. But when her beloved brother dies in battle and leaves a lion’s share of his estate to his best friend, Diana finds herself in a situation that seems scripted for the stage: Sharing her family home with the man she used to love—and now loathes. Worse, her unfaithful former fiancé has already moved in.

    OR AN EXCELLENT FAKE?

Rupert Lacey didn’t expect Diana to take the news without a fight. Still, he didn’t expect her to bring the battle directly to their newly shared doorstep—complete with a full set of trunks, and a full set of orders to the staff. Yet there she is, bold, regal…magnificent as ever. Now they would face a formidable challenge: to ignore each other—and the unanswered questions that stood between them. The only sure thing is their still blazing desire. But with a woman like Diana, it will take nothing less than a momentous misunderstanding, a missing prized mare, and a shocking revelation to restore a love that hasn’t lost its shine.

  • Magic for Liars

Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey

Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey is $2.99 and is a KDD! This is a fantasy novel where a non-magical heroine investigates a magical murder. One of my close friends gave this five stars and I trust her opinion. However, other readers on Goodreads say they were surprisingly a bit bored.

Ivy Gamble has never wanted to be magic. She is perfectly happy with her life—she has an almost-sustainable career as a private investigator, and an empty apartment, and a slight drinking problem. It’s a great life and she doesn’t wish she was like her estranged sister, the magically gifted professor Tabitha.

But when Ivy is hired to investigate the gruesome murder of a faculty member at Tabitha’s private academy, the stalwart detective starts to lose herself in the case, the life she could have had, and the answer to the mystery that seems just out of her reach.

  1. Arijo says:

I loved City of Brass! I snatched Kingdom of Copper on sale some time back but haven’t read it yet, I’m waiting for Empire of Gold to be on sale (if it ever happens) and then read the entire trilogy.

Magic For Liars was frustrating. The backstory had so much potential for something good, but the MC came accross as whiny, I found, and I didn’t particularly like her. Maybe because she lied so much to the guy she’s interested in (nope, the romance didn’t work for me either). As for the detective work, every time she almost takes a step forward, something blocks her and stalls the investigation – that was the (very) frustating part.

  2. Jill Q. says:

@Arijo, I found the protagonist in Magic For Liars annoying as well. I felt like she was way too hung up on not having magic in a way that felt very juvenile, for lack of a better word. It made her seem like a teenager angry that she isn’t the pretty, popular sister. Maybe it was needed for plot reasons, but I couldn’t finish it.
I liked everything else about the book and I would read another book by the same author.

  3. M says:

A FASHIONABLE INDULGENCE by KJ Charles, book 1 in the Society of Gentlemen series, is $.99 USD on Amazon US.

Also, if you’re into epic/high fantasy, M.L. Wang’s THE SWORD OF KAIGEN is also on sale at Amazon US for $.99 USD. This Asian-inspired fantasy has gotten extremely high praise since its release and has a very high rating on The STorygraph and Goodreads. It’s about a family of warriors fighting to save their empire. That’s really all I know, but I snatched both these books up this morning.

  4. Missy says:

I listened to the Magic for Liars audiobook (the narrator is excellent) and while I agree that the protagonist is whiny I think that is part of the point the story is making. I found that Ivy’s whininess was offset by the narrator’s “acting” choices so maybe listening to the book would be a good choice for people (like me) who are generally put off by whining

  5. Jenny says:

London Royal, by Nana Malone (which was mentioned on the site recently, has a particularly striking cover, and is the first book of a duet), is currently free at US Amazon.

The Seduction of Elliot McBride, the 5th book in Jennifer Ashley’s Mackenzie series, is currently $1.99 at US Amazon.

  6. Floating Lush says:

I love love *love* THE CITY OF BRASS! The trilogy is epic in scope, and draws heavily from history (as well as mythology and religion), so be prepared for a lot of feelings and a lot of…stuff…to happens. Highly recommended.

  7. FashionablyEvil says:

I also loved CITY OF BRASS, but want to caveat that while it has significant romantic elements, it’s not a romance and, as Floating Lush says, be prepared for feelings and…stuff.

  8. Maeve says:

City of Brass is excellent! I actually liked the 2nd book better, and the 3rd book best of all. In City of Brass one of the viewpoint characters is young and authoritarian, and by the third book he’s really grown as a person.

  9. Lisa F says:

Feather is VERY old skool, very. This series has felt pretty cut and paste for me, though.

  10. UlrikeDG says:

Magic for Liars almost felt like a prequel to me. I appreciated the MC’s flaws, but didn’t really enjoy the overall story. The audiobook narrator, Xe Sands, is very good, however.
