  • The Duchess Deal

The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare

RECOMMENDEDThe Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare is $2.99! This is the first book in the Girl Meets Duke series. Elyse really loved this book and gave it an A grade:

I totally recommend reading The Duchess Deal, but preferably while sober so you can really appreciate all of it. It’s the perfect blend of two of my favorite fairytale tropes, it’s got a hero who never an alpha-hole, it’s funny, and it’s got female friendship. What more could you want?

When girl meets Duke, their marriage breaks all the rules…

Since his return from war, the Duke of Ashbury’s to-do list has been short and anything but sweet: brooding, glowering, menacing London ne’er-do-wells by night. Now there’s a new item on the list. He needs an heir—which means he needs a wife. When Emma Gladstone, a vicar’s daughter turned seamstress, appears in his library wearing a wedding gown, he decides on the spot that she’ll do.

    His terms are simple:
    – They will be husband and wife by night only.
    – No lights, no kissing.
    – No questions about his battle scars.
    – Last, and most importantly… Once she’s pregnant with his heir, they need never share a bed again.

But Emma is no pushover. She has a few rules of her own:
    – They will have dinner together every evening.
    – With conversation.
    – And unlimited teasing.
    – Last, and most importantly… Once she’s seen the man beneath the scars, he can’t stop her from falling in love…

  • Longbourn

    Longbourn by Jo Baker

Longbourn by Jo Baker is $1.99! This book divided some of the Bitches. Carrie gave it gave it an A, while Sarah gave it a D. Which camp are you in? Did you love it or hate it?

A brilliantly imagined, irresistible below-stairs answer to Pride and Prejudice: a story of the romance, intrigue and drama among the servants of the Bennet household, a triumphant tale of defying society’s expectations, and an illuminating glimpse of working-class lives in Regency England.

The servants at Longbourn estate–only glancingly mentioned in Jane Austen’s classic–take centre stage in Jo Baker’s lively, cunning new novel. Here are the Bennets as we have never known them: seen through the eyes of those scrubbing the floors, cooking the meals, emptying the chamber pots. Our heroine is Sarah, an orphaned housemaid beginning to chafe against the boundaries of her class. When the militia marches into town, a new footman arrives under mysterious circumstances, and Sarah finds herself the object of the attentions of an ambitious young former slave working at neighboring Netherfield Hall, the carefully choreographed world downstairs at Longbourn threatens to be completely, perhaps irrevocably, up-ended. From the stern but soft-hearted housekeeper to the starry-eyed kitchen maid, these new characters come vividly to life in this already beloved world. Jo Baker shows us what Jane Austen wouldn’t in a captivating, wonderfully evocative, moving work of fiction.

  • The Women’s War

The Women’s War by Jenna Glass

The Women’s War by Jenna Glass is $2.99! I’m on the fence about reproduction being so tied to womanhood, but the description says it’s a feminist and revolutionary fantasy. I’m hoping there’s some major subversion here and I’m also getting Lysistrata vibes. Reader Nicole was kind enough to list some triggers last time it was on sale!

In a feminist fantasy epic, a revolutionary spell gives women the ability to control their own fertility—with consequences that rock their patriarchal society to its core.

    “A compulsive read, riveting characters, life-or-death stakes . . . a smashing book!”—Tamora Pierce

When a nobleman’s first duty is to produce a male heir, women are treated like possessions and bargaining chips. But as the aftereffects of a world-altering spell ripple out physically and culturally, women at last have a bargaining chip of their own. And two women in particular find themselves at the liberating crossroads of change.

Alys is the widowed mother of two adolescent children, and the disinherited daughter of a king. Her existence has been carefully regulated, but now she discovers a fierce talent not only for politics but also for magic—once deemed solely the domain of men. Meanwhile, in a neighboring kingdom, young Ellin finds herself unexpectedly on the throne after the sudden death of her grandfather the king and everyone else who stood ahead of her in the line of succession. Conventional wisdom holds that she will marry quickly, then quietly surrender the throne to her new husband. Only, Ellin has other ideas.

The tensions building in the two kingdoms grow abruptly worse when a caravan of exiled women and their escort of disgraced soldiers stumble upon a new source of magic in what was once uninhabitable desert. This new and revolutionary magic—which only women can wield—might well tear down what is left of the patriarchy. The men who currently hold power will do anything to retain it. But what force in the world can stand against the courage and resolution of generations of women who have tasted freedom for the very first time?

  • Sparked

    Sparked by Lily Cahill

Sparked by Lily Cahill is 99c at Amazon! I’ve had this one on my Kindle for ages because the concept really interests me, but you know how that goes. It’s like a digital graveyard. This is a superhero romance set in Colorado in the 1950s.

Independence Falls, Colorado. 1954. It was the start of a perfect summer—until the fog rolled in and changed everything. Now these heroes will explore their newfound abilities … and each other.

Clayton Briggs has always had it easy. The pampered second son of the prestigious Briggs clan, Clayton’s back in Independence Falls poised to take over the family business. His playboy days aren’t quite over, but his mother is on a campaign to match him with a woman suitable to his station. When he meets a beautiful girl at the Firelight Festival, he’s instantly attracted—until he realizes she’s a member of the notorious Murphy family. The Murphys and Briggs have been feuding for decades, but Clayton can’t control his feelings for Cora. Will passion trump family responsibility?

Cora Murphy has always had it hard. When she isn’t scraping together pennies by baking for the town’s wealthy families, she’s all but a slave to her father and brother, who drink and gamble away most of her profits. She could run, but Cora won’t leave her sister behind. All she needs a bit of luck, but luck has never sided with the Murphys. Then her entire life changes in one moment. When Cora is caught in a mysterious purple fog at the Firelight Festival, she suddenly discovers powers beyond anything she’s ever imagined. And it seems Clayton might be the only man who understands … because he has powers of his own.

  7. Michelle says:

I had really mixed feelings about Longborne! I felt the character backstories could have been more subtly meted out—there were whole chapter flashbacks which I found clunky. And I felt there were a good deal of dropped plot threads. Interesting ideas, though.

  8. Lisa F says:

Pretty fond of all of these!
