  • Hench

    Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots

RECOMMENDED: Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots is $2.99! Sarah reviewed this one and gave it an A:

In reading and then re-reading this book, I’ve discovered so many more layers, hidden parallels, and very clever dissections of the fictional world of the characters and of the actual reality that this book resides within. Hench is delicious in its anger and ferocity, chilling in its deadpan snark and arctic clarity of analysis and assessment, and meticulous in its nuance. It’s a villainously wonderful good time.

A smart, imaginative, and evocative novel of love, betrayal, revenge, and redemption, told with razor-sharp wit and affection, in which a young woman discovers the greatest superpower—for good or ill—is a properly executed spreadsheet.

Anna does boring things for terrible people because even criminals need office help and she needs a job. Working for a monster lurking beneath the surface of the world isn’t glamorous. But is it really worse than working for an oil conglomerate or an insurance company? In this economy?

As a temp, she’s just a cog in the machine. But when she finally gets a promising assignment, everything goes very wrong, and an encounter with the so-called “hero” leaves her badly injured.  And, to her horror, compared to the other bodies strewn about, she’s the lucky one.

So, of course, then she gets laid off.

With no money and no mobility, with only her anger and internet research acumen, she discovers her suffering at the hands of a hero is far from unique. When people start listening to the story that her data tells, she realizes she might not be as powerless as she thinks.

Because the key to everything is data: knowing how to collate it, how to manipulate it, and how to weaponize it. By tallying up the human cost these caped forces of nature wreak upon the world, she discovers that the line between good and evil is mostly marketing.  And with social media and viral videos, she can control that appearance.

It’s not too long before she’s employed once more, this time by one of the worst villains on earth. As she becomes an increasingly valuable lieutenant, she might just save the world.

A sharp, witty, modern debut, Hench explores the individual cost of justice through a fascinating mix of Millennial office politics, heroism measured through data science, body horror, and a profound misunderstanding of quantum mechanics.

  • In a Holidaze

In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren

In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren is $2.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. This is a holiday romance with a twist, a la Groundhog Day. I’m a huge CLo fan and they’re the only ones I’m willing to break my “no holiday romance” rule for. Have you read this one?

Love Actually meets Groundhog Day in the quintessential holiday romance by the New York Times bestselling author of The Honey-Don’t List.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…but not for Maelyn Jones. She’s living with her parents, hates her going-nowhere job, and has just made a romantic error of epic proportions.

But perhaps worst of all, this is the last Christmas Mae will be at her favorite place in the world—the snowy Utah cabin where she and her family have spent every holiday since she was born, along with two other beloved families. Mentally melting down as she drives away from the cabin for the final time, Mae throws out what she thinks is a simple plea to the universe: Please. Show me what will make me happy.

The next thing she knows, tires screech and metal collides, everything goes black. But when Mae gasps awake…she’s on an airplane bound for Utah, where she begins the same holiday all over again. With one hilarious disaster after another sending her back to the plane, Mae must figure out how to break free of the strange time loop—and finally get her true love under the mistletoe.

Jam-packed with yuletide cheer, an unforgettable cast of characters, and Christina Lauren’s trademark “downright hilarious” (Helen Hoang, author of The Bride Test) hijinks, this swoon-worthy romantic read will make you believe in the power of wishes and the magic of the holidays.

  • The Coincidence of Coconut Cake

The Coincidence of Coconut Cake by Amy Reichert

The Coincidence of Coconut Cake by Amy E. Reichert is $1.99! I’ll be honest; this book sounds delightful and delicious. I know I’ll be taking advantage of this sale. Readers loved the writing, but some found themselves wanting more in terms of the romantic aspects. It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

YOU’VE GOT MAIL meets HOW TO EAT A CUPCAKE in this delightful novel about a talented chef and the food critic who brings down her restaurant—whose chance meeting turns into a delectable romance of mistaken identities.

In downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Lou works tirelessly to build her beloved yet struggling French restaurant, Luella’s, into a success. She cheerfully balances her demanding business and even more demanding fiancé…until the morning she discovers him in the buff—with an intern.

Witty yet gruff British transplant Al is keeping himself employed and entertained by writing scathing reviews of local restaurants in the Milwaukee newspaper under a pseudonym. When an anonymous tip sends him to Luella’s, little does he know he’s arrived on the worst day of the chef’s life. The review practically writes itself: underdone fish, scorched sauce, distracted service—he unleashes his worst.

The day that Al’s mean-spirited review of Luella’s runs, the two cross paths in a pub: Lou drowning her sorrows, and Al celebrating his latest publication. As they chat, Al playfully challenges Lou to show him the best of Milwaukee and she’s game—but only if they never discuss work, which Al readily agrees to. As they explore the city’s local delicacies and their mutual attraction, Lou’s restaurant faces closure, while Al’s column gains popularity. It’s only a matter of time before the two fall in love…but when the truth comes out, can Lou overlook the past to chase her future?

Set in the lovely, quirky heart of Wisconsin, THE COINCIDENCE OF COCONUT CAKE is a charming love story of misunderstandings, mistaken identity, and the power of food to bring two people together.

  • Raziel

    Raziel by Kristina Douglas

Raziel by Kristina Douglas is $1.99! This is a paranormal romance with angels and demons and, if I’m not mistaken, Douglas also writes as Anne Stuart. Many readers loved the hero and want to see more angels in paranormal romances. However, some felt they were more interested in the overall plot than the actual characters.

Kristina Douglas’s sexy new series introduces a realm of fallen angels and ruthless demons, where an eternal rebellion is brewing . . . and one unsuspecting woman can change the fate of the Fallen forever.

She was just an ordinary mortal . . .

“You’re dead” is so not what Allie Watson wants to hear. Unfortunately, it explains a lot. Like the dark, angelically handsome man who ferried her to this strange, hidden land. The last thing she remembers is stepping off a curb in front of a crosstown bus. Now she’s surrounded by gorgeous fallen angels with an unsettling taste for blood—and they really don’t want her around. Not exactly how she pictured heaven.

. . . until death catapulted her into a seductive world she never imagined.

Raziel is unsure why he rescued Allie from hellfire against Uriel’s orders, but she stirs in him a longing he hasn’t felt in centuries. Now the Fallen are bracing for the divine wrath brought by his disobedience, and they blame Allie for the ferocious Nephilim clawing at the kingdom’s shrouded gates. Facing impossible odds at every turn, the two must work together to survive. Raziel will do anything to defend his spirited lover against the forces of darkness—because Allie may be the Fallen’s only salvation.

  1. Glauke says:

Hench is -probably- definitely my favourite read of 2020. Bought it when it got mentioned on the podcast, I think, and man did it not disappoint.

  2. MirandaB says:

The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking) by Katie Mack is 3.99. This is a wonderful book by a physics professor at NCSU. Surprising amount of humor for a book about the ways the universe could end.

The Hollow Places by T. R. Kingfisher is also on sale. This is the second book in the series with The Twisted Ones, although it covers different people. I haven’t read this one, but Twisted Ones scared the crap out of me.

  3. Jcp says:

http://www.harlequin.com is having a buy 3 get 2 free sale with the code BYE2020 today and tomorrow

  4. Lisa F says:

Hench is excellent, and well worth a purchase.

  5. JenC says:

In a Holidaze is a lot of fun. I read it, was delighted, and then sent copies to all my friends for Christmas.

  6. Nikki says:

I read the coincidence of the coconut cake a few years ago after seeing it on here, as a baker foodie I LOVED it. The recipe for the cake is included in the book which is amazing, and also part of my regular baking repertoire now.

  7. PamG says:

I read Coincidence of the Coconut Cake a few years ago. As I recall, it was a nice, low angst read with an interesting premise. Sadly my issue with it was that I had recently read another book with almost the exact same set up. In this trope-heavy genre, this is not a unique occurrence, but the strong similarities between these two plots really bothered me at the time though I’m pretty sure the follow through was different. I guess I’ll have to dig deep in the Kindle for a quick reread of both books.

However, if this unusual trope fascinates you and you got Amazon gift cards as prezzies recently, you might want to consider pairing Coincidence with Reservations for Two by Jen Lohmann. The latter is only $4.99 so it’s almost as good as a sale.

  8. Kat says:

The Coincidence of Coconut Cake is a sweet, low angst story. It’s a bit of a love letter to a city (Milwaukee, WI) that doesn’t get a lot of love in general as well.

  9. Katie says:

The Unyielding by Shelly Laurenston (third Call of Crows) is 99 cents. Not sure for how long.

  10. I write about angels, fallen angels, demons, and I like to read other authors’ ideas on them. I’m adding ‘The Fallen: Raziel’ to my TBR list! Thanks!

  11. Susan says:

I’m obviously in the minority here, but I gave TCOCC a very generous 3 stars on GR. Too many issues to enumerate, and most are spoilery, but the “hero” was especially problematic for me. His professional actions were, well, unprofessional and violated industry standards, and his personal actions weren’t any better. I just didn’t like him and don’t think he went thru enough genuine growth and change to atone for his douchebaggery.

I had high hopes for a feel-good, comfort read but was left agitated and angry instead. The food stuff was good, tho.

  12. Kareni says:

Sadly, Hench did not work for me. I put it down after a couple of chapters.
