  • Kiss My Cupcake

Kiss My Cupcake by Helena Hunting

Kiss My Cupcake by Helena Hunting is $2.99! This is a standalone contemporary romance with two rival small business owners. I’d say it definitely has an opposites attract element. Have you read this one?

As two neighborhood shop owners battle for business, they prove opposites attract in this outrageously funny romantic comedy from the USA Today bestselling author of Meet Cute.

Blaire Calloway has planned every Instagram-worthy moment of her cupcake and cocktails shop launch down to the tiniest detail. What she didn’t plan on? Ronan Knight and his old-school sports bar next door opening on the very same day. He may be super swoony, but Blaire hasn’t spent years obsessing over buttercream and bourbon to have him ruin her chance at success.

From axe throwing (his place) to frosting contests (hers), Blaire and Ronan are constantly trying to one-up each other in a battle to win new customers. But with every clash, there’s also an undeniable chemistry. When an even bigger threat to their business comes to town, they’re forced to call a temporary time-out on their own war and work together. And the more time Blaire spends getting to know the real Ronan, the more she wonders if it’s possible to have her cupcake and eat it too.

  • The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton

RECOMMENDED: The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton is $2.99! I really liked this mystery. It’s a mix of a locked room murder mystery and Groundhog Day. Turton just came out with a new historical mystery that I’m very curious to read.

    THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER.

“Gosford Park” meets “Groundhog Day” by way of Agatha Christie – the most inventive story you’ll read this year.

Tonight, Evelyn Hardcastle will be killed… again.

It is meant to be a celebration but it ends in tragedy. As fireworks explode overhead, Evelyn Hardcastle, the young and beautiful daughter of the house, is killed.

But Evelyn will not die just once. Until Aiden – one of the guests summoned to Blackheath for the party – can solve her murder, the day will repeat itself, over and over again. Every time ending with the fateful pistol shot.

The only way to break this cycle is to identify the killer. But each time the day begins again, Aiden wakes in the body of a different guest. And someone is determined to prevent him ever escaping Blackheath…

  • Heiress for Hire

Heiress for Hire by Madeline Hunter

Heiress for Hire by Madeline Hunter is $1.99! This is the first book in a new series for Hunter and Catherine gave it a B-. She felt the mystery element didn’t have the same satisfying resolution as the romance. I liked this one a better (maybe a B or B+).

In this stunning series debut from New York Times bestselling author Madeline Hunter, a duke’s mysterious bequest brings fortune—and passion—to three young women…

Minerva Hepplewhite has learned the hard way how to take care of herself. When an intruder breaks into her home, she doesn’t swoon or simper. Instead, she wallops the rogue over the head and ties him up—only to realize he is Chase Radnor, the man who nearly got her convicted of her late husband’s murder. Now, he’s insisting that Minerva has inherited a fortune from his uncle, a wealthy Duke. Only one thing could surprise her more: her sudden attraction to this exasperating man…

Chase can’t decide whether Minerva is a wronged woman or a femme fatale. Either way, he’s intrigued. Since the scandal surrounding her husband’s death, she has set up a discreet detective business to rival Chase’s own. She may be the perfect person to help him uncover the truth about his uncle’s demise. But as proximity gives way to mutual seduction, Chase realizes he craves a much deeper alliance…

  • Seven Years to Sin

Seven Years to Sin by Sylvia Day

Seven Years to Sin by Sylvia Day is $1.99! This is another erotic historical romance and the book actually inspired Day’s other romance Bared to You A | BN | K | G | AB ). Though readers mention the first half is a little slow, they enjoyed the chemistry between the hero and heroine. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

Seven years ago, on the eve of her wedding, Lady Jessica Sheffield witnessed a scene so scandalous she could not erase it from her memory. Shocked, yet strangely titillated, she nevertheless walked down the aisle into a life serene yet unremarkable. But what she kept hidden fueled wildly imaginative and very illicit dreams. . .

Alistair Caulfield ran far from the temptation of the prim debutante–all the way to the West Indies. As a successful merchant, he has little in common with the rakehell youth Jessica once knew. But when newly widowed Jessica steps aboard his ship for a transatlantic passage, seven years’ worth of denied pleasures are held in check by nothing more than a few layers of silk–and the certainty that surrender will consume them both. . .

I must have been in a bad mood this spring when I read Heiress for Hire because it was just meh and I skimmed from the middle to the end. I love Hunter’s other books (I’ve read them all) so I think this was just a “me” thing. Seven Years to Sin looks like naughty fun and I’m trying to not get wrapped around an axle: the word “sin” bugs me in reference to sex or nonvanilla sex because it smells like slut or kink shaming. That being said, I’ll read the book before getting my feathers completely ruffled.

Hey I hope all you US smarties had a fabulous holiday weekend.

Kiss My Cupcake is roughly a B-/C+ for me. Lots of banter and opposites attracting, but said banter is pretty childish. Love the hero’s grandfather, though.

Heiress for Hire’s a flat B for me too.

The Wolves at the Door by Judith Pearson is 1.99$ on kindle. It’s about Virginia Hall, a recently featured kickass woman of history here on SBTB. It seems a bit sensationalist compared to Sonia Purnell’s biography, though.

Evelyn Hardcastle was weird. I liked it until close to the end. And then after I had finished it I couldn’t stop thinking about it, but not in the good way. Much less “I hate you but I can’t stop thinking about your hair, dammit” and much more *shudder* “Damned glad I dodged that bullet” way.

The Evelyn Hardcastle book started in a promising way, but it had a lot of ugly fatshaming stuff in it that bugged me. It was just in one particular part, so it is in theory skippable. I skimmed to the end and I remember thinking “that’s it? that’s the reason?” But I think it’s very hard to pull off a good twist ending fwiw.

@rose, I agree. It is hands down my favorite Sylvia Day and has earned a place on my keeper shelf.
