  • The Winter Sea

The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley

RECOMMENDED: The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal. Sarah had this to say:

It’s absorbing, beautiful, and made me tear up at the end. It’s amazing – buy it for yourself or for someone who likes historical romance, mystery, or really, really powerful writing.

    History has all but forgotten…

In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland to reclaim his crown.

Now, Carrie McClelland hopes to turn that story into her next bestselling novel. Settling herself in the shadow of Slains Castle, she creates a heroine named for one of her own ancestors and starts to write.

But when she discovers her novel is more fact than fiction, Carrie wonders if she might be dealing with ancestral memory, making her the only living person who knows the truth-the ultimate betrayal-that happened all those years ago, and that knowledge comes very close to destroying her…

  • The Kiss List

The Kiss List by Sonya Weiss

The Kiss List by Sonya Weiss is 99c! This is a shorter contemporary romance with an enemies to lovers setup. It came out in February and seems like a good option if you want something quick, a bit fluffy, and fun.

All Haley Bowman has ever wanted was her One True Love. But now, with her cousin getting married and Haley back in her small town, the pressure is on. Good thing she’s got a foolproof Kiss List, full of potential OTLs. Her parents knew they were soul mates at their first kiss, so surely Haley will know the same. All she needs to do is…well, kiss each of these guys…

Enter Max Gallagher: bane of Haley’s existence, her nemesis since childhood, and, unfortunately, as a local, her way in with all the guys on the Kiss List. Max wants nothing to do with love and certainly nothing to do with Haley, but he can clear the way for her to get to know the guys on the list. Of course, he wants something in return: to be made a partner in Haley’s family’s business. One kiss for relinquishing her hold-out vote on Max.

But the more time Max and Haley spend together, the clearer it is that there’s a paper-thin line between love and hate. Max will have to decide between the job he’s always dreamed of or the girl of his dreams before his fate is sealed with someone else’s kiss.

  • A Lady’s Guide to Etiquette and Murder

A Lady’s Guide to Etiquette and Murder by Dianne Freeman

A Lady’s Guide to Etiquette and Murder by Dianne Freeman is $1.99! It’s a KDD today. This is book in the A Countess of Harleigh Mystery series. If you’ve exhausted all of your historical mystery with romantic subplot options, try this one. It was also mentioned in the comments of The Rec League: Mysteries with Romance Crossover Appeal.

In this exciting historical mystery debut set in Victorian England, a wealthy young widow encounters the pleasures—and scandalous pitfalls—of a London social season . . .

Frances Wynn, the American-born Countess of Harleigh, enjoys more freedom as a widow than she did as a wife. After an obligatory year spent mourning her philandering husband, Reggie, she puts aside her drab black gowns, leaving the countryside and her money-grubbing in-laws behind. With her young daughter in tow, Frances rents a home in Belgravia and prepares to welcome her sister, Lily, arriving from New York—for her first London season.

No sooner has Frances begun her new life than the ghosts of her old one make an unwelcome appearance. The Metropolitan police receive an anonymous letter implicating Frances in her husband’s death. Frances assures Inspector Delaney of her innocence, but she’s also keen to keep him from learning the scandalous circumstances of Reggie’s demise. As fate would have it, her dashing new neighbor, George Hazelton, is one of only two other people aware of the full story.

While busy with social engagements on Lily’s behalf, and worrying if Reggie really was murdered, Frances learns of mysterious burglaries plaguing London’s elite. The investigation brings death to her doorstep, and Frances rallies her wits, a circle of gossips, and the ever-chivalrous Mr. Hazelton to uncover the truth. A killer is in their midst, perhaps even among her sister’s suitors. And Frances must unmask the villain before Lily’s season—and their lives—come to a most unseemly end . . .

  • When the Duke was Wicked

When the Duke was Wicked by Lorraine Heath

When the Duke was Wicked by Lorraine Heath is $1.99! This is the first book in the Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James series. When this book was previously on sale, Pooks said she loves this whole series, as the heroes were all raised by Fagin from Oliver Twist.

They are England’s most eligible bachelors, with the most scandalous reputations. But for the right woman, even an unrepentant rogue may mend his ways…

Lady Grace Mabry’s ample inheritance has made it impossible for her to tell whether a suitor is in love with her—or enamored of her riches. Who better to distinguish beau from blackguard than her notorious childhood friend, the Duke of Lovingdon?

With no interest in marriage, Lovingdon has long lived only for pleasure. He sees little harm in helping Grace find a proper match. After all, he’s familiar with all the ploys a scoundrel uses to gain a woman’s favor. He simply has to teach the lovely innocent how to distinguish honest emotions from false ones. How better than by demonstrating his wicked ways. But as lessons lead to torrid passion and Grace becomes ensnared in another man’s marriage plot, Lovingdon must wage a desperate gamble: Open his heart fully—or risk losing the woman he adores…

  1. Caitlin says:

FWIW, the Hero and Heroine of When the Duke was Wicked are actually the children of the Fagin’s Gang characters (those books are the the “Scoundrels of St. James” series). The Scandalous Gentlemen series focuses on the second generation, and also connects to the next series she did (“Hellions of Havisham”).

  2. Lisa F says:

Nice raft of choices! All of these are worthwhile in various ways.

  3. Sarah T. says:

I just finished “Gentleman Jim” last night and I loved it. Totally worth the read. It is well written with strong characters and an excellent plot.

  4. Deianira says:

“The Winter Sea” is the first Susanna Kearsley I read, & still my favorite. Granted, that could have to do with the Jacobite setting of half the story – Scottish history was my grandmother’s passion, & she passed it on to me – but the sense of place of the modern half of the story is strong, too. Definitely worth a read! (And also, if you’re in the area, the ruins of Slains Castle are worth a visit.)
