Four Historical Romances

  • An Extraordinary Union

An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole is $1.99! This could expire ASAP. Simply put, GET THIS BOOK. Sarah completely loved it:

First, yes, you should absolutely read this book immediately, if you haven’t already. There is so much happening in the conflict within each of the protagonists, between the protagonists, and around them and their allies and enemies, I can’t possibly discuss all of it, but please know: if you are a reader (and why else would you be here, right?) this book is a marvelous, intelligent, respectful, breathtaking treat for your brain.

As the Civil War rages between the states, a courageous pair of spies plunge fearlessly into a maelstrom of ignorance, deceit, and danger, combining their unique skills to alter the course of history and break the chains of the past . . .

Elle Burns is a former slave with a passion for justice and an eidetic memory. Trading in her life of freedom in Massachusetts, she returns to the indignity of slavery in the South—to spy for the Union Army.

Malcolm McCall is a detective for Pinkerton’s Secret Service. Subterfuge is his calling, but he’s facing his deadliest mission yet—risking his life to infiltrate a Rebel enclave in Virginia.

Two undercover agents who share a common cause—and an undeniable attraction—Malcolm and Elle join forces when they discover a plot that could turn the tide of the war in the Confederacy’s favor. Caught in a tightening web of wartime intrigue, and fighting a fiery and forbidden love, Malcolm and Elle must make their boldest move to preserve the Union at any cost—even if it means losing each other . . .

  • Fortune Favors the Wicked

Fortune Favors the Wicked by Theresa Romain

RECOMMENDED: Fortune Favors the Wicked by Theresa Romain is $1.99! There’s a treasure hunt, a blind hero, and a former courtesan heroine. Talk about catnip! Redheadedgirl gave this an A grade in a Lightning Review.

    INDECENTLY LUCKY

As a lieutenant in the Royal Navy, Benedict Frost had the respect of every man on board—and the adoration of the women in every port. When injury ends his naval career, the silver-tongued libertine can hardly stomach the boredom. Not after everything—and everyone—he’s experienced. Good thing a new adventure has just fallen into his lap…

When courtesan Charlotte Perry learns the Royal Mint is offering a reward for finding a cache of stolen gold coins, she seizes the chance to build a new life for herself. As the treasure hunt begins, she realizes her tenacity is matched only by Benedict’s—and that sometimes adversaries can make the best allies. But when the search for treasure becomes a discovery of pleasure, they’ll be forced to decide if they can sacrifice the lives they’ve always dreamed of for a love they’ve never known…

  • Ruthless

    Ruthless by Anne Stuart

Ruthless by Anne Stuart is 99c! This is a historical romance and I’d say it’s a little on the darker side as (if I recall) both characters have a history of trauma. There is a significant age difference (sixteen years) and be forewarned, that the hero does sleep with other people while pursuing the heroine. I wrote a quick review of this on Goodreads back in 2011:

The sense of sexual tension between Rohan and Elinor was achieved perfectly. I just felt that the climax (pun intended) fell short of what I was expecting. In terms of that and the resolution of the book’s central conflict, the buildup was way more enjoyable to experience than the conclusion of both aspects.

Few outsiders will ever witness the dark misdeeds of the Heavenly Host. And among this secret society, where exiled Georgian aristocrats gather to indulge their carnal desires, fewer still can match the insatiable appetite of their chief provocateur, the mysterious Viscount Rohan.

Pursuit of physical pleasure is his both his preferred pastime and his most-pressing urge, until he encounters the fascination of a woman who won’t be swayed. And while his dark seduction appalls the pure and impoverished Elinor Harriman, she finds herself intrigued…and secretly drawn to the man behind the desire.

New York Times bestselling author Anne Stuart masterfully weaves an irresistible tale of lust and privilege in decadent times. Passions will be loosed, egos will be tamed-This is Rohan.

  • You Never Forget Your First Earl

You Never Forget Your First Earl by Ella Quinn

You Never Forget Your First Earl by Ella Quinn is $1.99! This is a historical romance and part of The Worthingtons series. RHG gave this a C+ in a Lightning Review. She wished there were more conflict in the book, but recommends this if you’re in the mood for a fluffy, uncomplicated read.

Within the Worthingtons’ extended family circle, laughter and romance rule, and a young lady never settles for less than true love…

With her three good friends all recently married, Elizabeth Turley is ready for some husband-hunting of her own. One gentleman in particular sparks her interest. Geoffrey, Earl of Harrington is tall, handsome, and dashing. He’s also just a bit too sure of himself. But Elizabeth has observed enough about the rules of attraction to pique the earl’s attention. Yet once she has it, the discovery of a troubling secret taints her future happiness.

Lord Harrington must marry or lose a prestigious position in Brussels, and pretty, well-connected Elizabeth fits his needs admirably. But could it be that he has underestimated his bride? She doesn’t bat an eye in the face of the danger they encounter overseas. She’s strong-willed, intelligent, and more enticing each day—yet also more indifferent to him. Now Geoffrey faces his greatest challenge: to woo and win his own wife, or risk losing her for good.

I’ve read everything but the Stuart – all of them are really great. Everyone knows of Cole and Romain’s greatness, but I’ve always felt that Quinn is underrated.

  2. FashionablyEvil says:

I enjoyed the Romain (but don’t read it for the mystery.) I’m also in the minority on Alyssa Cole—I really liked the premise of An Extraordinary Union, but the delivery just fell flat for me. I think maybe it would have worked better for me as straight historical fiction?

  3. Kareni says:

    FREE for Kindle Readers:

A unique fantasy I recently read and enjoyed ~ Plumbess Seg by Jude Fawley.

A m/m romance with an unusual premise ~ Any Given Lifetime by Leta Blake.

Heard good things about ~ Human Omega: Discovered on the Slave Planet (Pykh Book 1) by Eileen Glass.

  4. Sydneysider says:

The Alyssa Cole is good, and definitely worth buying at that price. The third book in the series is my favourite.
