  • Wolfsong

    Wolfsong by T.J. Klune

Wolfsong by TJ Klune is $2.99 at Amazon! This book and Klune’s writing in particular have been recommended on previous podcast episodes. This a paranormal m/m romance and it has an astounding 4.4 rating on Goodreads. And for Klune fans, he has a lot of new releases coming up through now and 2021 (at least five!).

Ox was twelve when his daddy taught him a very valuable lesson. He said that Ox wasn’t worth anything and people would never understand him. Then he left.

Ox was sixteen when he met the boy on the road. The little boy who talked and talked and talked. Ox found out later the little boy hadn’t spoken in almost two years before that day, and that the little boy belonged to a family who had moved into the house at the end of the lane.

Ox was seventeen when he found out the little boy’s secret and it painted the world around him in colors of red and orange and violet, of Alpha and Beta and Omega.

Ox was twenty-three when murder came to town and tore a hole in his head and heart. The boy chased after the monster with revenge in his bloodred eyes, leaving Ox behind to pick up the pieces.

It’s been three years since that fateful day—and the boy is back. Except now he’s a man, and Ox can no longer ignore the song that howls between them.

  • Written in Red

Written in Red by Anne Bishop

RECOMMENDED BY MANY: Written in Red by Anne Bishop is $2.99! This is the first book in The Others series. I love this series and many readers of the site do too. However, there was a great discussion last time this was on sale about the erasure of indigenous peoples. A content warning for the book, as it does feature self-harm.

As a “cassandra sangue,” or blood prophet, Meg Corbyn can see the future when her skin is cut–a gift that feels more like a curse. Meg’s Controller keeps her enslaved so he can have full access to her visions. But when she escapes, the only safe place Meg can hide is at the Lakeside Courtyard–a business district operated by the Others.

Shape-shifter Simon Wolfgard is reluctant to hire the stranger who inquires about the Human Liaison job. First, he senses she’s keeping a secret, and second, she doesn’t smell like human prey. Yet a stronger instinct propels him to give Meg the job. And when he learns the truth about Meg and that she’s wanted by the government, he’ll have to decide if she’s worth the fight between humans and the Others that will surely follow.

  • In Bed with the Earl

In Bed with the Earl by Christi Caldwell

In Bed with the Earl by Christi Caldwell is 99c at Amazon! This is book one in the Lost Lords of London series and I’m super curious about it. It has amnesia, but the hero seems to have it prior to meeting the heroine. Also, the heroine is a reporter!

Christi Caldwell, USA TODAY bestselling author of the Wicked Wallflowers series, combs London’s underground and finds romance and danger for a missing lord and the lady who loves him.

To solve a mystery that’s become the talk of the ton, no clues run too deep for willful reporter Verity Lovelace. Not even in the sewers of London. That’s precisely where she finds happily self-sufficient scavenger Malcom North, lost heir to the Earl of Maxwell. Now that Verity’s made him front-page news, what will he make of her?

Kidnapped as a child, with no memories of his well-heeled past, Malcom prefers the grimy spoils of the culverts to the gilded riches of society. Damn the feisty beauty who exposed the contented tosher to a parade of fortune-hunting matchmakers. How to keep them at bay? Verity must pretend to be his wife. She owes him.

The intimacy of this necessary arrangement—Verity and Malcom thrust together in close quarters—soon sparks an irresistible heat. But when the charade ends, the danger begins. Will love be enough to protect them from a treacherous plot devised to ruin them?

  • A Darker Shade of Magic

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab is $2.99! This book comes recommended from several friends of mine, though I haven’t read it yet. Many readers loved the fantasy aspects and different cast of characters, but there are also readers who felt the book really slogged at times. Have you read this one?

From V.E. Schwab, the critically acclaimed author of Vicious, comes a new universe of daring adventure, thrilling power, and parallel Londons, beginning with A Darker Shade of Magic.

Kell is one of the last Travelers–magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes–as such, he can choose where he lands.

There’s Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there’s Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne–a place where people fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London…but no one speaks of that now.Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see–a dangerous hobby, and one that has set him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations, first robs him, then saves him from a dangerous enemy, and then forces him to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.

But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive–and that is proving trickier than they hoped.

A Rogue’s Wager by Christi Caldwell is also on sale for $1.99. It’s the first of a series, as well. I haven’t read it but it has a 4.02 rating on Goodreads.

  2. Georgina says:

Romance Free Reads has links to over 200 free romance novels on the major ebook platforms, apparently for today only.

    http://romancefreereads.com/

Any thoughts or recs on these novels? One I noticed was A Match Made for Thanksgiving by Jackie Lau, which Catherine recommended in the Rec League for Hook-Ups a few months back.

  3. omphale says:

The Lord I Left by Scarlett Peckham is 1.99 on major retailers today. Been waiting for this one to go on sale!

  4. Jenny says:

@Georgina – Jackie Lau is an auto-buy author for me. I love her humor, the diversity of people who inhabit her books, and incorporation of great food. A Match Made for Thanksgiving is the first of a four-book set centered around four siblings, who each find their HEA in spite of their parents/grandparents’ matchmaking efforts. You can’t go wrong with any of these books. Lau has a brand new book out, the first in a series centered around friends who gather at a cider bar in Toronto.

  5. FashionablyEvil says:

@Georgina—I really liked that Jackie Lau one. (I’ve read a bunch of her stuff recently—it’s a little fluffy, often very funny and sexy. Ice Cream Lover in particular was great.)

I loved Darker Shade of Magic—it has romantic angles, but is more fantasy/adventure. Would recommend to people who liked Six of Crows, Graceling, Court of Fives, or City of Brass.

  6. Carrie G says:

    @Georgina

That’s a lot of books! Whew! Thanks for posting the link. I picked up a couple of cozy mysteries with romance to try out because I sometimes need something light to fall back on. I already have the Jackie Lau, although I haven’t read it.

  7. Laurel says:

I found Wolfsong a bit of a mixed bag. I think the high ratings on Goodreads had me anticipating something extra-special, and I ended up being disappointed. It has an interesting take on werewolves, but be warned, it is quite violent. There is a romance, but it takes a very long time to get to it and it is not the main focus of this book. I did not continue to read the series, perhaps there is more romance in future books in the series.

I think TJ Klune is a talented writer (he certainly has a very enthusiastic fanbase), but this book didn’t really work for me.

  8. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Georgina: of the books at the link, if you like contemporary romance on the “spicier” side, I’d recommend London Hale’s SINNER, Sadie Haller’s POWER EXCHANGE, and Ainsley Booth’s PAGE OF SWORDS. I’ve also read some books by Tracy Alvarez, but not the books available at the link.

  9. Qualisign says:

@Laurel One of the things I like most about TJ Klune is how different each book or series is from his other work. Yes, I like some books far more than others, but I find that the context in which I read each one (political, social, environmental, etc.) has a lot to do with how I read it. It took an initial DNF then a retry a couple of months later to get through THE QUEEN AND THE HOMO JOCK KING. As with his other books, I find the post reading reflection to be almost better than the actual reading experience. But ymmv for any given book.

  10. Michelle says:

I love love loved Wolfsong. The main character, the side characters, the different take on werewolves, the writing.. It made me cry ugly tears, it made me sigh happily, it made me laugh out loud and it made me fistbump my three year old son (who was game but also very confused) many times.

  11. Peggy Collins says:

KJ Charles has Slippery Creatures is $.99 and The Magpie Lord is free.

  12. Maite says:

Thanks Georgina for the link to Romance Free Reads!

At least for Kobo, this is NOT one day only thing. There are some titles I have solely because they have been free before, so maybe permafree.
I did scroll the entire thing, and aside from the Jackie Lau (auto-buy), this authors have also been recced in the Bitchery at some point: Lexy Timms & Amy Jo Cousins. (I’ve read one book by each and liked it, but can’t give any more detail)

  13. Jcp says:

Week-end with her bachelor by Jeannie moon is free with the code September Free at https://tulepublishingshop.com/products/weekend-with-her-bachelor?_pos=1&_sid=cd596cb34&_ss=r

  14. Empress of Blandings says:

One of the books in that list is called ‘I Shot the Serif’ which is perhaps my favourite book title ever

  15. Carrie G says:

    @Empress of Blandings

I know! I got it jut for the title.

  16. Cristie says:

I also love love love Wolfsong. It was one of those books that I couldn’t stop thinking about after I read it and even though there’s a lot of grief and difficult moments in the book I will still go back to re-read regularly. It’s one of my favorite comfort reads.

  17. Jessica says:

Written in Red reeled me in a few years ago and now I wait, without an ounce of patience, for each book in this Anne Bishop series to come out. …and then I read them too quickly and feel sad that there aren’t a hundred more waiting for me…

  18. Georgina says:

Thank you for all the suggestions! Looking forward to trying them out.

  19. Kareni says:

I’ll cast another enthusiastic vote for Written in Red which is one of my favorite books. I also enjoyed Wolfsong.
