  • Circe

    Circe by Madeline Miller

Circe by Madeline Miller is $4.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and it’s being price matched. I know $4.99 is a little higher for books we feature on sale, but everyone and their mom has been loving Circe. I want to say that most of my book group has read it by now. Have you read it? Does it live up to the hype?

In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child–not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power–the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of course, wily Odysseus.

But there is danger, too, for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love.

With unforgettably vivid characters, mesmerizing language and page-turning suspense, Circe is a triumph of storytelling, an intoxicating epic of family rivalry, palace intrigue, love and loss, as well as a celebration of indomitable female strength in a man’s world.

  • Ice Cream Lover

Ice Cream Lover by Jackie Lau

Ice Cream Lover by Jackie Lau is 99c! Holy abs, Batman! This is the second book in the Baldwin Village series, which can be read out of order. This series has a lot of foodie elements and is relatively low angst, which a lot of us are in the  mood for right now.

I hate ice cream. Ever since my fiancée left me at the altar and skewered me in her bestseller “Embrace Your Inner Ice Cream Sandwich: Finding the Positive You in a World of Negativity,” I haven’t been able to stomach the stuff.

Unfortunately, my five-year-old niece is a budding foodie and her favorite place in the world is Ginger Scoops, a cutesy Asian ice cream shop. Since I’ve been looking after my niece a lot lately, I’ve spent too much time there, sipping black coffee, refusing to eat ice cream, and trying not to look at the owner, Chloe Jenkins. Chloe is obnoxiously cheerful, and I can’t stand her.

Naturally, I end up kissing her.

But I’ve sworn off women after the fiasco with my ex-fiancée, and I’m convinced I’m no good at relationships. Still, with Chloe I’m tempted to do the impossible: give love and ice cream another chance…

  • The Duke’s Stolen Bride

The Duke’s Stolen Bride by Sophie Jordan

The Duke’s Stolen Bride by Sophie Jordan is $2.99! Another Kindle Daily Deal and the selection today features a Veronica Speedwell installment, historical fiction and more. Elyse read this one and gave it a B, despite the book having a lot of her catnip:

While I wanted more time spent on the couple’s emotional journey, it was mostly because I enjoyed Marian and Nathaniel so much as characters: an independent heroine and a curmudgeonly hero are basically my catnip. Plus there were so many fun sex scenes.

    An urgent dilemma…

To save her impoverished family, Marian Langley will become a mistress. But she will not be just any mistress. Marian intends to become so skilled, so coveted, that she can set her own terms, retaining control over her body and her fate. Only one problem remains: finding a tutor…

    A scandalous solution…

Other men deprive themselves of pleasure for propriety’s sake. Nathaniel, Duke of Warrington, would much rather be depraved. He slakes his desires with professionals who ask nothing of him but his coin. Marian’s proposal—that he train her without taking her virtue—is an intriguing diversion, until their lessons in seduction spin out of control.

    And a most unlikely duchess…

When Marian is blackmailed into engagement by a man she despises, Nate impulsively steals her away. Though he never intended to take a wife, he can’t tolerate the idea of Marian forfeiting her freedom to another. But can he bear to give her what she demands—a real marriage?

  • Burn the Dark

Burn the Dark by S.A. Hunt

Burn the Dark by S.A. Hunt is $2.99! This was a previous pick of mine in Hide You Wallet and features a ghost-hunting YouTuber who gets involved in some pretty creepy stuff. I believe this one was self-pubbed before being picked up, so there is a chance you may have read it before the re-release.

Supernatural meets Stranger Things in award-winning author S. A. Hunt’s Burn the Dark, first in the Malus Domestica horror action-adventure series about a punk YouTuber on a mission to bring down witches, one vid at a time.

Robin is a YouTube celebrity gone-viral with her intensely-realistic witch hunter series. But even her millions of followers don’t know the truth: her series isn’t fiction.

Her ultimate goal is to seek revenge against the coven of witches who wronged her mother long ago. Returning home to the rural town of Blackfield, Robin meets friends new and old on her quest for justice. But then, a mysterious threat known as the Red Lord interferes with her plans….

I read Ice Cream Lover earlier this year and LOVED it. I would agree it’s relatively low angst, but I will mention that Chloe is still grieving her mother’s death from a few years earlier and that she has some family issues to work out in relation to losing her mom (which Jackie Lau discussed in her post for this site on writing biracial characters).

    It’s on my list for a re-read when I have a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency stressful period.

  2. Darlynne says:

I read the title of the last book as BURN THE DORK. Today is starting out just fine, thanks.

  3. MsCellanie says:

I also just read Ice Cream Lover.
Liked it a lot. One thing I really liked is that the ex-fiancee was not written as evil. She was written as the heroine of a book that we’re not reading right now. Obviously and understandably, she’s not the hero’s favorite person – but she’s not a cartoon-y evil mean girl bitch on wheels.

    I appreciate that in books.

  4. Rachel says:

Circe is amazing, but also hurts–but in a good way?

  5. G. says:

Circe is a wonderful read, as is Miller’s debut. Anyway, it’s worth that 4.99 for sure.

  6. JudyW says:

Circe was a bit of a rage read to be honest. I found the viewpoint of the Gods quite interesting but this is a group that could be cruel and capricious especially to women. Circe appeared to be punished for every little transgression as well as none at all. This made it a bit of a “Grrrr” problem for me when reading.

  7. Msb says:

Joining the Circe chorus. Two real pluses for me: the book’s examinations of the joy of work and of the drawbacks of godhood. Read it! Read it!

  8. cleo says:

I loved Ice Cream Lover. And it works for at least 2 summer bingo categories – ice cream and dumped at the wedding.
