Hide Your Wallet

August’s New Releases, Part One

If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.

Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), but we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.

We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as quickly as the big five.

As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments.

  • Glorious Day

    Glorious Day by Skye Kilaen

    Author: Skye Kilaen
Released: August 3, 2020 by NineStar Press
    Genre: , , ,

The bodyguard is a traitor. The princess is her one true love. And the revolution is almost here.

Elsenna Hazen left spaceport security and ended up a royal bodyguard. She should have known better than to fall in love with a princess.

It’s been two years since one ill-advised kiss in the garden pulled them apart. With uprisings in the streets, the nervous princess transfers Elsenna back into her service. Her Highness has no idea Elsenna is leaking data to the revolutionaries bent on overthrowing the princess’s oppressive father.

Now Elsenna wakes up each day wondering what will happen first: her own execution, or that of the woman she could never stop loving. When rebel attacks escalate and the king plans retaliation, Elsenna discovers that the fights for her love and her life are one and the same.

Susan: Body guard romance! Space royalty! Betrayal in the name of revolutions! I want this to be good and have all of the complicated feelings and politics, so fingers crossed for me.

  • The Immortal City

The Immortal City by May Peterson

    Author: May Peterson
Released: August 3, 2020 by Carina Press
    Genre: , , ,
    Series: The Sacred Dark #2

Sometimes you just have to jump.

The second book in The Sacred Dark series, a lush fantasy romance by acclaimed author May Peterson.

    I don’t remember you…

Reborn as an immortal with miraculous healing powers, Ari remembers nothing of his past life. His entire world now consists of the cold mountainside city of Serenity. Ruled with an iron fist. Violent.

    Lonely.

    I may never remember you…

Regaining the memories of who he once was seems an impossible dream, until Ari encounters Hei, a mortal come to Serenity for his own mysterious purposes. From the moment Hei literally falls into his arms, Ari is drawn to him in ways he cannot understand. Every word, every look, every touch pulls them closer together.

    But I’m with you now…

As their bond deepens, so does the need to learn the truth of their past. Together they journey to find an ancient immortal who can give them what they both want: a history more entwined than Ari could have ever imagined, but which Hei has always known.

It’s the reason they will risk the world as they know it to reclaim who they used to be—and what they could be once again.

Aarya: The blurb sounds very epic, and that’s my favorite kind of fantasy romance.

  • Always Only You

Always Only You by Chloe Liese

    Author: Chloe Liese
    Released: August 4, 2020
    Genre: ,
    Series: The Bergman Brothers #2

It’s an office romance on the ice rink in this heart melting story about love’s power not in spite of difference but because of it.

Ren has known Frankie Zeferino was a woman worth waiting for since the moment they met. She’s a master of deadpan delivery, has a secret heart of gold, and a rare one-dimpled smile that makes his knees go weak. But as long as Frankie’s the team’s social media manager, she’s off limits.

Frankie is a self-admittedly blunt, grumbly grump, but even she isn’t immune to sunshiney Ren Bergman. Who could be, when he’s a six-foot-three hunk of happy with a hockey player’s physique? Maybe in the past, Frankie would have gone for a guy like him, but since being burned too many times by people who learn about her diagnoses and see a problem, not a person, she’s wised up.

After waiting years for the right time to make his move, Ren learns Frankie plans to leave the team to pursue a new career. But what he didn’t anticipate is how hard he’ll have to work to convince her to let him have his shot at winning her heart.

Susan: THE GRUMPY ONE IS SOFT FOR THE SUNSHINE ONE. THE WOMAN GETS TO BE THE GRUMPY ONE AND THE MAN GETS TO BE THE SUNSHINE ONE. “Grumpy one is soft for the sunshine one” is the top of my favourite trope list, so I am VERY here for this!

Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston

    Author: Ashley Poston
Released: August 4, 2020 by Quirk Books
    Genre: ,
Series: Once Upon a Con #3

In the third book in Ashley Poston’s Once Upon a Con series, Beauty and the Beast is retold in the beloved Starfield universe.

Rosie Thorne is feeling stuck—on her college application essays, in her small town, and on that mysterious General Sond cosplayer she met at ExcelsiCon. Most of all, she’s stuck in her grief over her mother’s death. Her only solace was her late mother’s library of rare Starfield novels, but even that disappeared when they sold it to pay off hospital bills.

On the other hand, Vance Reigns has been Hollywood royalty for as long as he can remember—with all the privilege and scrutiny that entails. When a tabloid scandal catches up to him, he’s forced to hide out somewhere the paparazzi would never expect to find him: Small Town USA. At least there’s a library in the house. Too bad he doesn’t read.

When Rosie and Vance’s paths collide and a rare book is accidentally destroyed, Rosie finds herself working to repay the debt. And while most Starfield superfans would jump at the chance to work in close proximity to the Vance Reigns, Rosie has discovered something about Vance: he’s a jerk, and she can’t stand him. The feeling is mutual.

But as Vance and Rosie begrudgingly get to know each other, their careful masks come off—and they may just find that there’s more risk in shutting each other out than in opening their hearts.

Amanda: A book-loving heroine and a Hollywood hero hiding out!

  • Migrations

    Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy

    Author: Charlotte McConaghy
Released: August 4, 2020 by Flatiron
    Genre: ,

For readers of Station Eleven and Flight Behavior, a debut novel set on the brink of catastrophe, as a young woman chases the world’s last birds – and her own final chance for redemption.

A dark past. An impossible journey. The will to survive.

Franny Stone has always been a wanderer. By following the ocean’s tides and the birds that soar above, she can forget the losses that have haunted her life. But when the wild she so loves begins to disappear, Franny can no longer wander without a destination. She arrives in remote Greenland with one purpose: to find the world’s last flock of Arctic terns and follow them on their final migration. She convinces Ennis Malone, captain of the Saghani, to take her onboard, winning over his salty, eccentric crew with promises that the birds she is tracking will lead them to fish.

As the Saghani fights its way south, Franny’s new shipmates begin to realize that the beguiling scientist in their midst is not who she seems. Battered by night terrors, accumulating a pile of letters to her husband, and dead set on following the terns at any cost, Franny is full of dark secrets. When the story of her past begins to unspool, Ennis and his crew must ask themselves what Franny is really running toward—and running from.

Propelled by a narrator as fierce and fragile as the terns she is following, Migrations is a shatteringly beautiful ode to the wild places and creatures now threatened. But at its heart, it is about the lengths we will go, to the very edges of the world, for the people we love.

Amanda: This cli-fi (climate fiction) is astounding. High on my list of 2020 books.

To avoid blurting out their fortunes, she converts to coffee, but somehow fortunes escape and find a way to complicate her life and the ones of those around her. To add to this plight, her romance life is so nonexistent that her parents enlist the services of a matchmaking expert from Shanghai.

When her eccentric Aunt Evelyn shows up with a tempting offer to whisk her away, Vanessa says au revoir to California and bonjour to Paris. • Vanishing Falls

    Vanishing Falls by Poppy Gee

    Author: Poppy Gee
Released: August 4, 2020 by William Morrow Paperbacks
    Genre:

In this propulsive, page-turning thriller, the dark secrets of a small town in Tasmania are unraveled as a well-known figure goes missing without a trace—perfect for fans of Eleanor Oliphant and Ruth Ware.

Vanishing Falls, deep in the Tasmanian rainforest, is a remote small town with a storied past. The town’s showpiece, built in the 1800s, is its calendar house—an eccentric, lavish mansion. These days, the house is occupied by Jack Lily, a prominent art collector and landowner, and his wife, Celia…or at least, it was. For the pretty, popular, and kind Celia has suddenly disappeared.

Joelle Smithton knows that a few folks in Vanishing Falls believe that she’s stupid. It’s true that Joelle’s brain works a little differently—a legacy of shocking childhood trauma. But Joelle sees far more than most people realize, and remembers details that others cast away. For instance, she knows that Celia’s husband, Jack, has connections to unsavory local characters whom he’s desperate to keep hidden. He’s not the only one in town with something to conceal. Even Joelle’s own husband, Brian, a butcher, is acting suspiciously. While the police flounder, unable to find Celia’s body, Joelle is gradually parsing the truth from the gossip she hears and from the simple gestures and statements that can unwittingly reveal so much.

Just as the water from the falls disappears into the ground, gushing away through subterranean creeks, the secrets in Vanishing Falls are pulsing through the town, about to converge. And when they do, Joelle must summon the courage to reveal what really happened to Celia, even if it means exposing her own past.

With one of the most memorable heroines in fiction, Vanishing Falls captivates from its first page to the shocking, electrifying ending.

Elyse: A thriller set in the Tasmanian rainforest.

But after the catastrophe of her own marriage, Teddi loses her heart, her hope, and half of her assets. She is officially jaded, but she needs every job she can get to make ends meet. When bride-to-be Kelly Scott walks in, Teddi is ready. Until she comes face-to-face with Kelly’s sister: Leah Scott, her ex-wife’s divorce attorney. The one who helped ruin her life.

Leah Scott wears her heart on her sleeve, an odd characteristic for a divorce attorney. When her father left her stay-at-home mom with barely enough money to survive, she recognized her calling. But Leah still believes in happiness and no one deserves it more than her sister. If only Kelly didn’t insist on using a wedding planner who hates Leah’s guts…despite the unexpected and wholly unwanted chemistry between them.

Tara: I always read anything Georgia Beers writes, but I’m extra intrigued by this premise. Divorced wedding planner + her ex-wife’s divorce lawyer, who happens to be in the party for a wedding she’s planning.

    Star Daughter by Shveta Thakrar

    Author: Shveta Thakrar
Released: August 11, 2020 by HarperTeen
    Genre: ,

This gorgeously imagined YA debut blends shades of Neil Gaiman’s Stardust and a breathtaking landscape of Hindu mythology into a radiant contemporary fantasy.

The daughter of a star and a mortal, Sheetal is used to keeping secrets. Pretending to be “normal.” But when an accidental flare of her starfire puts her human father in the hospital, Sheetal needs a full star’s help to heal him. A star like her mother, who returned to the sky long ago.

Sheetal’s quest to save her father will take her to a celestial court of shining wonders and dark shadows, where she must take the stage as her family’s champion in a competition to decide the next ruling house of the heavens–and win, or risk never returning to Earth at all.

Brimming with celestial intrigue, this sparkling YA debut is perfect for fans of Roshani Chokshi and Laini Taylor.

Aarya: Very intrigued by this YA fantasy inspired by Hindu mythology. I wonder if the mom is an apsara.

A friend of mine adores Alexis Daria and has convinced me to read her new book, and so I’m most looking forward to You Had Me at Hola for August new releases. I love the cover art and the title for this one.

The Flatshare was one of my favorite books last year and so I’m of course on board for whatever Beth O’Leary writes next. I have seen mixed reviews though of The Switch and so I’m tempering my anticipation accordingly.

I had saved Emerald Blaze in my GR’s “2020 new releases” folder but then have not yet had a chance to read the first book of Catalina’s trilogy.

With everything that went down, isn’t it kind of weird to use ‘RITA ® Award Winning author’ as a recommandation?

  3. FashionablyEvil says:

SUPER excited for the new Kat Holloway and L. Penelope books. Sarah’s encapsulation of the Kat Holloway series (“perfect blend of competence porn, clever heroine sleuth, fascinating cast, and excellent mysteries”) is spot-on and all my catnip.

I’m heading to the beach next week and am just hoping my kindle isn’t going to suffer long term damage from the glass of water that got spilled on my nightstand…

Several books I’d been looking forward to in July (from Sybil Bartel, Ainsley Booth, and CD Reiss) had their release dates postponed. Life in covid times, I suppose. So take my August tbr with a grain of salt, but for what it’s worth, here are the books I’m looking forward to in August:

Clare Connelly’s IT STARTED WITH A LIE is the latest in her Montebellos series and features a fake relationship trope. (This was actually released yesterday and, after I started it, I realized it’s “fake relationship/only one bed because our hosts really think we’re together”—one of my favorite elements of the fake relationship trope.)

Caitlin Crews’s TEMPT ME is the third and final book in a bdsm-themed series she’s publishing through Dare. The previous book, TAKE ME, was ultra-hot. I’m interested if Crews keeps the streak going.

Jackie Ashenden has a new HP, PROMOTED TO PRINCESS. Obviously a royal romance, undoubtedly featuring Ashenden’s trademark couples with ongoing interior monologues and similarly dysfunctional backgrounds.

Julie Kriss’s DIRTY TALK is the third in her Filthy Rich series about a group of friends who grew up rough and unexpectedly became wealthy (as often happens). This one features a “no-strings-attached” affair—but when has that ever worked in Romancelandia?

Sybil Bartel’s SHAMELESS is the latest in her long-running Alpha Bodyguards romantic-suspense series. If I’m reading the synopsis correctly, this one features an age-gap.

Ainsley Booth’s FILTHY LIAR is the fifth and, supposedly, final installment of her Forbidden Bodyguards series. This one involves the owner of a security & protection company discovering that his long-time secretary/PA is not the person she appears to be.

  5. Mich says:

The Enforcer Enigma: The San Andreas Shifters by GL Carriger dropped into my Kindle this morning. I’ve really enjoyed this series, but then, I really enjoy everything by Gail Carriger. I’m looking forward to starting this today.

  6. Ren Benton says:

Other than HARROW, I’ve got nothing on my list. September is going to be the expensive month for me.

@-m-: The “average” reader is not extremely online and has no idea RWA exists, much less what its internal politics are like. “Won an award” remains a viable tactic to appeal to the broader market.

Also, Daria won that award in spite of the bigots, and if she wanted to wave it around yelling “NEENER, NEENER, SUCK IT!”, she’d have every right to do so.

  7. FashionablyEvil says:

@Mich—I’m also a Gail Carriger fan. Did you also read Defy or Defend and Meat Cute? I thought those were both excellent for fans (especially Meat Cute. Finally, the hedgehog incident explained!)

  8. DonnaMarie says:

As the grumpy one in any relationship, I think I’m going to be picking up Always Only You. Truthfully, I enjoy any grumpy main character. Add in a hot hockey player, and I’m all in.

I’m doing a happy dance for the new Cat Holloway book, but it also reminds me that I’ve fallen behind on her Captain Lacey series. This is what happens when your library shuts down for a few months. You lose track of your reading priorities.

I had stopped reading MaryJanice Davidson a while back because I was finding her heroines a little one note, but here a new book, The Love Scam, has popped up on my new release list. It seems to have no pnr elements, just straight up contemporary romance, and I’m intrigued. There’s a strong whiff of fish out of water (snurf) trope: He wakes up in Venice with no memory of how he got there. It also appears to be book two of a series so I’ll have to go hunting for that….

  9. Carrie G says:

Has anyone red the previous books in the series with Bookish and the Beast? Did you enjoy them and should they be read first?

And the same questions for Always Only You. Have you read this author?

I’m really missing our wonderful library system! I can’t afford all these books. 🙂

    Thanks!

  10. Carrie G says:

Also, it looks like you get a free short story, Once a Princess, when you preorder Bookish and the Beast.

  11. Amanda says:

@Carrie G: Since Bookish was my pick, I’ll answer that one! They can be read out of order, as there isn’t a continuing series of events. The books are linked, however, as the characters are all fans or have ties to a sci-fi show. They’re all fairy tale retellings with geeky themes and the first book, Geekerella is super cute.

  12. Elham says:

I’m really happy to see the May Peterson book on here. I’m reading her first book LORD OF THE LAST HEARTBEAT right now and I’ve already pre-ordered THE IMMORTAL CITY. I’m only a third of the way through it but the world she built is beautiful and the romance, which is only just beginning, is so sweet.

  13. Briana says:

I’m most excited (right now) for Lily Morton’s AFTER FELIX, which comes out on Aug 2nd. I recently found her books and adore the snark and interconnected characters. (The books are pretty much standalones, but characters come back through.) Little glimpses of Felix and Max have been in other books ABC’s I can’t wait for their story.

I think all the other ones I’m excited about are second half of the month.

  14. Crystal says:

@Ren, same, girl. I have a couple books coming out (I know I’ve got Had Me At Hola preordered), but it’s definitely September that’s the bloodbath in this hizzy.

  15. Joyce says:

August 4 is release date for Julie McElwain’s 5th Kendra Donovan book…Shadows In Time. Super series about a time traveling FBI profiler.

All the books are great reads.

  16. JenM says:

As always, I find books I never would otherwise have heard of through these posts. ALWAYS ONLY YOU sounds right up my alley so I’ll be looking out for it. In addition, HOPELESS ROMANTIC is all of my catnip – an f/f take on the pairing of a wedding planner and the opposing divorce attorney in her own breakup is the book I didn’t even realize I wanted.

  17. Michele says:

@FashionablyEvil: I did read Defy or Defend, but I haven’t gotten to Meat Cute yet. I will, and it’s good to hear that it’s worth it.

I like the way she writes and I even enjoy her newsletter (Deanna Raybourn’s is another newsletter that I like to receive). I’m about half-way through The Enforcer Enigma. I heartily recommend it so far…

  18. Caroline says:

ALWAYS ONLY YOU Is awesome such my catnip. Only When It’s Us is the first in her series and I read that as well today. In short, I got nothing done on my actual to-do list on my day off. This week was the first time since March I read a new to me author/ new book. It was so great. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.
