  • American Sweethearts

    American Sweethearts by Adriana Herrera

American Sweethearts by Adriana Herrera is $1.99! This is book four in the Dreamers contemporary romance series. Herrera’s romances have been reviewed favorably on the site and have often been featured in Hide Your Wallet. Are you a Herrera fan?

Juan Pablo Campos doesn’t do regrets. He’s living the dream as a physical therapist for his beloved New York Yankees. He has the best friends and family in the world and simply no time to dwell on what could’ve been.

Except when it comes to Priscilla, the childhood friend he’s loved for what seems like forever.

New York City police detective Priscilla Gutierrez has never been afraid to go after what she wants. Second-guessing herself isn’t a thing she does. But lately, the once-clear vision she had for herself—her career, her relationships, her life—is no longer what she wants.

What she especially doesn’t want is to be stuck on a private jet to the Dominican Republic with JuanPa, the one person who knows her better than anyone else.

By the end of a single week in paradise, the love/hate thing JuanPa and Pris have been doing for sixteen years has risen to epic proportions. No one can argue their connection is still there. And they can both finally admit—if only to themselves—they’ve always been a perfect match. The future they dreamed of together is still within reach…if they can just accept each other as they are.

  • The Curse of Chalion

The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold

The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold is $1.99! This fantasy novel has been recommended several times in the site’s comments over the years. Some readers felt their interest in the main character waned, but overall, they enjoyed the plot. It has a 4.1-star rating on Goodreads.

A man broken in body and spirit, Cazaril returns to the noble household he once served as page and is named secretary-tutor to the beautiful, strong-willed sister of the impetuous boy who is next in line to rule. It is an assignment Cazaril dreads, for it must ultimately lead him to the place he most fears: the royal court of Cardegoss, where the powerful enemies who once placed him in chains now occupy lofty positions.

But it is more than the traitorous intrigues of villains that threaten Cazaril and the Royesse Iselle here, for a sinister curse hangs like a sword over the entire blighted House of Chalion. And only by employing the darkest, most forbidden of magics can Cazaril hope to protect his royal charge — an act that will mark him as a tool of the miraculous . . . and trap him in a lethal maze of demonic paradox.

  • Graceling

    Graceling by Kristin Cashore

RECOMMENDED: Graceling by Kristin Cashore is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal. This is a YA fantasy novel with romantic elements and I LOVED it. The entire series is pretty great, to be honest. The heroine is strong and all sorts of badass, but she’s also trying to cope with being a hired killer for the king.

Katsa has been able to kill a man with her bare hands since she was eight – she’s a Graceling, one of the rare people in her land born with an extreme skill. As niece of the king, she should be able to live a life of privilege, but Graced as she is with killing, she is forced to work as the king’s thug.

When she first meets Prince Po, Graced with combat skills, Katsa has no hint of how her life is about to change.

She never expects to become Po’s friend.

She never expects to learn a new truth about her own Grace – or about a terrible secret that lies hidden far away.

  • Dear Haiti, Love Alaine

Dear Haiti, Love Alaine by Maika Moulite

Dear Haiti, Love Alaine by sisters Maika and Maritza Moulite is $1.99! This book was featured on both Cover Awe and Hide Your Wallet. I had the pleasure of meeting these authors at BEA a few years back and they were so incredibly nice and bubbly. This one is on my TBR pile, but we all know that thing is massive.

This exceptional debut novel captures a sparkling new voice and irrepressible heroine in a celebration of storytelling sure to thrill fans of Nicola Yoon, Ibi Zoboi and Jenna Evans Welch!

When a school presentation goes very wrong, Alaine Beauparlant finds herself suspended, shipped off to Haiti and writing the report of a lifetime…

You might ask the obvious question: What do I, a seventeen-year-old Haitian American from Miami with way too little life experience, have to say about anything?

    Actually, a lot.

Thanks to “the incident” (don’t ask), I’m spending the next two months doing what my school is calling a “spring volunteer immersion project.” It’s definitely no vacation. I’m toiling away under the ever-watchful eyes of Tati Estelle at her new nonprofit. And my lean-in queen of a mother is even here to make sure I do things right. Or she might just be lying low to dodge the media sharks after a much more public incident of her own…and to hide a rather devastating secret.

All things considered, there are some pretty nice perks…like flirting with Tati’s distractingly cute intern, getting actual face time with my mom and experiencing Haiti for the first time. I’m even exploring my family’s history—which happens to be loaded with betrayals, superstitions and possibly even a family curse.

You know, typical drama. But it’s nothing I can’t handle.

  1. ReadKnitSnark says:

Lois McMaster Bujold is a master at worldbuilding, as well as writing relationships and character growth… not to mention that the politics in her books are exquisite (how many Hugos and Nebulas does she have again? More than two hands?) so you really want to buy THE CURSE OF CHALION. Then you want to get the audiobook, because the narration is excellent! Love love love!

  2. Stefka says:

YES!! Adriana Herrera fan here. I just one-clicked on American Sweethearts. I’ve twice listened to the audiobook of the first of that series, American Dreamer (great narrator!), via Libby and really like the characters Herrera has created. I’m slowly buying the rest of the books so was excited to see this one on sale. I’m also VERY tempted by Dear Haiti, Love Alaine…argh, budgets!! As always, thanks Amanda and SBTB- y’all are awesome!

  3. WS says:

I want to love Adriana Herrera, but it was a slog getting through the first of the American Dreamer books, and I stalled out halfway through the second.

The Curse of Chalion is not my favorite Bujold book, but, that said, I like it. I just like Miles more. :).

  4. Heberta says:

And when you’re done with Curse of Chalion, go pay full price and read Paladin of Souls. You’re welcome.

  5. NanH says:

I loved Graceling, too! It was satisfying to watch the heroine start to pay a little more attention to herself and come to terms with her own badassery.

  6. Lisa F says:

I can confirm the Hererra is amazing!

  7. Deet says:

Graceling, and the whole series, was super great. However, I am here to tell anyone interested that Justina Ireland’s 2nd in series, Deathless Divide is on sale, 2.99 at amazon, and I am SO excited. Not romance but I feel it is up the alley of many here.

It is a civil war era zombie story, featuring black characters (and written by a black woman). The first is available to read for free on prime. I loved it so much I immediately bought it with real money.

  8. Tam says:

I love the Graceling series, it’s brilliant YA. I remember starting the first book and thinking I’d seen the teenage-female-killer trope a lot before, but then the whole book genuinely surprised me. Also really good on the topic of consent.

  9. Kareni says:

Another vote for The Curse of Chalion which I recently enjoyed. I liked this and the second book more than the third. I’ve also just read and enjoyed the first of the related Penric novellas. (And I read all but one of the Vorkosigan books over the last month. You might say I’ve been on a Bujold kick.)

  10. TinaNoir says:

I revisit The Curse of Chalion audiobook every couple-three years. The world building is fab. Also Cazariel’s entire story — from his backstory to his change in circumstances from the start of the book to the end of the book reminds me that Bujold is just as excellent at character crafting as she is at world-building.

  11. Nebilon says:

I read Paladin of Souks before Curse of Chalion. I don’t recommend it as a reading order! Then I read everything Lois had written, in the order I could get hold of it in bookshops . Again I wouldn’t recommend getting into the Vorkosigan saga by reading Diplomatic Immunity first and then Ethan of Athos…

But read Lois Bujold as soon as you can, her characters and world building are wonderful. Even the stuff I don’t enjoy as much, like the very young Milles, is fun

  12. Leigh Kramer says:

Loved American Sweethearts! The whole series is amazing.

  13. Trefoil says:

Thanks Deet! I have been holding off on returning my pre-covid library books because I haven’t read the Deathless Divide yet, but now I have bought it and can get my 6 holds out of library purgatory. (Our local has just started curb side book pick up).

  14. Kareni says:

@Nebilon, ‘Paladin of Souks’ is a great typo. I’d read that book!

  15. Nebilon says:

@Kareni. Oops!. And so would I!

  16. Carrie says:

Curse of Chalion is amazing on audiobook! The narration is superb and does real justice to Bujold’s beautiful prose. If you’re going to venture into the Vorkosigan books, please start with Shards of Honor which tells the story of how Miles’ parents fell in love. It’s another example of Bujold’s amazing storytelling. It could be read as a backsotry if you’re already a fan of Miles. I listened to this on audio, as well, and highly recommend experiencing it that way.

My romance book club decided to read A Civil Campaign by Bujold (Vorkosigan #15) because she used to say it was her nod to Regency romance. I decided to read Komarr (#14) first because it sets up the love interest, and then continued with Winterfair Gifts (short story). I’ve read probably 6 or so other Miles books, but doing these out of order was just fine. The three works make a wonderful love story.

Bujold’s Sharing Knife series is fantasy, and is very well done. Also highly recommended.
