Links: Things to Watch, Read, & Craft

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Today doesn’t feel like a Wednesday. Is that just me?

Anyway, time has no meaning and I’m very tired. Is anyone else tired, like just in general?

Please stay safe. Please keep protesting. Wash your hands. Stay hydrated. Take restorative care of yourself.

Vulture has compiled a list of TV procedurals you can watch that center women and people of color.

Did I post about this already? If I did, oh well! It’s still super cute.

Read about this real life romance between an actress and her stunt double.

As a bisexual/panromantic woman, I appreciated these recommends from author Erin McLellan. More bisexuals in romance please!

Since events and meetings via Zoom seem to be the new normal, here are some photos of British sitcom sets to spice up your background. As a fan of Absolutely Fabulous, I’m happy to see it on the list.

Have you worked your way through all of your crafting projects? Tiny Modernist has some free and very cute cross stitch patterns!

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

Someone posted about #BlackPublishingPower on one of the daily deal posts and I thought I’d post it here, for those not on twitter

#BlackPubishingPower: “To demonstrate our power and clout in the publishing industry, Saturday June 13 – Saturday June 20, we encourage you to purchase any two books by Black writers. Our goal is to Blackout bestseller lists with Black voices”

    BookRiot article – https://bookriot.com/2020/06/15/blackpublishingpower-initiative-urges-readers-to-buy-books-by-black-authors/

It inspired me to buy two books by Black authors that have been on my wishlist for a while, including Xeni by Rebekah Weatherspoon

I love the list of non-police procedurals. I have never seen Rosemary & Thyme but will look for it now. I don’t think I realized just how many police shows are on TV today until the past month. It’s very telling about our overall culture and not in a good way.

  3. Maureen says:

@Blackjack-I LOVE Rosemary and Thyme!! I watched it years ago, and have thought about revisiting the series this summer. The gardens are absolutely incredible!

  4. Teev says:

@cleo: I’m one of those not on twitter and so was only catching up on #PublishingPaidMe today so this is a perfect update! Pre-ordered Take a Hint Dani Brown and By Sea and Sky

  5. Susan/DC says:

“Pushing Daisies” (from the non police procedurals list) is one of my favorite TV shows ever. The saturated colors, the occasional Kristen Chenowith song, the need for the hero and heroine to literally stay away from each other (all too relevant right now during a pandemic) – this is a sweet, poignant, romantic, funny, over-the-top show and I loved it.

  6. Ren Benton says:

@Blackjack: There’s a long read (five parts) by Alyssa Rosenberg that ran in the Washington Post in 2016 about the amount of influence law enforcement entities have on their depiction in media. Link to part 1:

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/sf/opinions/2016/10/24/how-police-censorship-shaped-hollywood/

The other parts are listed in the sidebar of that piece.

I don’t remember if that series goes into the influence on what shows get made, but executives participating in the racket choose how much of the propaganda to put on the market. It could be zero. We could have a full slate of shows about people with careers that don’t demand “make us look good or else.” And yet…

  7. Blackjack says:

@Ren Benton – Thank you for the link! I agree with everything you’ve said, and especially that representation is so important. We need alternatives in our entertainment as that is a huge part of our culture.

@Susan/DC – I have never seen Pushing Daisies but am going to check it out now!

@Maureen – I love gardening and so Rosemary and Thyme sounds great right now, in addition to offering an alternative to conventional police shows.

  8. Nancy C says:

Do check out the list of bisexual/pansexual romances compiled by Erin McLellan. About half of them also feature BIPOC rep.

  9. Cristie says:

Quantum Leap and Pushing Daisies are two of my all-time favorite shows. I may have go back and watch them again.

  10. Katie says:

Love that Leverage made the tail end of that non-cop show list. It’s one of my favorite shows ever. When Martin Shkreli (“pharma bro”) was in the news frequently, I thought of that show every time I saw his picture. He was like a real-life Leverage villain (rich, unrepentant, most heinous thing he did was infuriatingly not against the law, punchable face). So if anyone enjoys watching extremely rich, smug people who prey on the poorer/vulnerable be brought low, I highly recommend it.
