Links: Baby Animals & What is Love

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.I may have already complained about this, but I’m going to complain again.

It’s completely unfair that I have to deal with allergy season when I have avoided going outside way more than usual. And to make all the sinus pressure even worse, I have a wisdom tooth coming in.

HOW! WHY!

Frankly, this is bullshit.

The Smithsonian Channel is offering a free trial and may I suggest using it to watch their Baby Animal series.

This was linked in our SBTB Slack: Cats as Zoom call participants. I am “Clearly the One Who is Doing Something Else.”

Which one are you?

This YouTube channel has brought me so much joy (I know I already posted about it) and I have been listening to this cover song on repeat for the last 48 hours.

This list of emotional regulation tips from therapists has been hugely helpful right now.

Did you know that Alisha Rai has launched a cooking YouTube channel while in quarantine?

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

The NYT takes on the Addison Cain/Zoey Ellis Omegaverse controversy:

You just now have a wisdom tooth coming in? Are you much younger than I thought? I do want to mention, dentists seem to always recommend taking them out-but I’ve had mine (I’m 59) and they never gave me any trouble. Of course, not the case for everyone.

I really feel for people dealing with allergies right now. I’ve developed what I feel are low grade allergies to pollen and dust, definitely during the month of May. I sneeze, then cough till I feel almost sick. Took me several years to realize I wasn’t actually sick, but reacting to my environment. I couldn’t imagine having to go to work right now and having to explain over and over, “it’s only allergies!”.

  3. Amanda says:

@Maureen: I’m 31! I had two (top and bottom) on my left side removed years ago. Top right came in fine; now the bottom right is on its way in.

I grew up in Florida and now that I’m in New England, I have spring AND fall allergies. It’s awful.

  4. LML says:

@ Amanda: In despair one allergy season I tried taking one 24-hour allergy medicine at night and a different 24-hour allergy medicine in the morning. Topped off with daytime use of medicated allergy eye drops. Comfort greatly improved!

  5. Maureen says:

@Amanda-I’m so sorry you are having to deal with all this! I got my wisdom teeth in my late teens, early 20’s-it sucks one of yours is coming in now. I don’t know if Anbesol might help. Then add allergies on top of everything? As my friends from Parks and Rec would say “Treat yo’self!”.

  6. Todd says:

My wisdom teeth came in when I was in my 20s. All four came in just fine – not impacted or anything. Then the dentist told me that my jaw was too small for all those teeth (he’d had issues with my mouth being too small), so all four had to come out. Having come in, at least they came out without too much trouble. My sister, on the other hand, had all four impacted and one, I think, was lying sideways. She had a horrible time of it.

  7. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I never had wisdom teeth. I take their lack as a sign that either (1) I am more advanced on the evolutionary scale, or (2) I never ever had any wisdom. I’ll leave it to others to deduce which option my family chooses.

  8. Jazzlet says:

Amanda teething gel works on adults as well as babies.

I only ever had three wisdom teeth, I now have two as my dentist decided one had to come out. I wasn’t looking forward to it as I have friends who had a terrible time, the dentist barely pulled and it popped straight out. So yeah I was short on wisdom to begin with and I’m even shorter now.

  9. Deborah says:

There’s an article on the Omegaverse in the NYT. Maybe these really are the end times. (Also, they…kind of got it right? At first I thought they were suggesting that Omegaverse = shifter.)

  10. Christy says:

I loved the medieval music YouTube channel. It is a winner and that song will hopefully replace my current ear worm, which is Fairytale from the Eurovision essay by Catherine Heloise! She has a lot to answer for!!

A long read, but one of great interest to the Bitchery:

@Amanda: I had a wisdom tooth so large and impacted that I started to wake up during its removal. [shudders] My main piece of advice is to keep your jaw relaxed if you can. I was gritting my teeth a lot during recovery due to stress, which made things feel much worse.

  12. EC Spurlock says:

You have my sympathy, Amanda. The middle of a pandemic is no time to have allergies, it adds the bonus angst of “OK, which is this really?” In my case my sinuses tend to swell every time there’s an air pressure change, and we’ve been having a LOT of storms this spring. So I wake up every morning wondering what it’ll be today, blistering headaches, deafness, vertigo, something new? And yes, your sinuses can make your teeth throb too, which I’m sure is NOT helping. Prayers for your speedy relief!

And thank you for the article on emotional regulation. I have a lot of people I need to pass this on to (especially my sister, who is prone to panic attacks under normal circumstances) and I think it will be a great help.

  13. Escapeologist says:

@LML, @Amanda and anyone with allergies – solidarity!

I was told by an allergist doctor to take 2 so-called 24-hour allergy meds, morning and mid-afternoon, then stronger / drowsier meds at night. Obviously check with your own doctor before doubling up meds, but it’s good to know the option exists.

Shower after going outside into the pollen, wash hair too. Pollen sticks to your skin, hair and clothing.

Toothaches suck! I had a bad root canal situation a couple years back, the best painkiller was Marvelous Mrs Maisel – season 1 had just dropped. Also, cutting open an Advil liquid gel and applying directly to the tooth.

    Take care of yourself <3

@Christy: How would you like to be humming & singing “Oh the Doo Dah Day” instead? It’s been stuck in my head for the last week.

Just in case you need a refresher, it’s the song Foghorn Leghorn’s always singing while walking/tormenting the dog.
