  • Hero in the Highlands

Hero in the Highlands by Suzanne Enoch

Hero in the Highlands by Suzanne Enoch is $2.99! This is the first book in the No Ordinary Hero series and has an enemies-to-lovers element. Some readers thought the romance felt forced, while others loved Enoch’s writing. Have you read this?

    WILD AT HEART

Scotland, 1812: He’s ferocious and rugged to the bone, an English soldier more at home on the battlefield than in any Society drawing room. And when Major Gabriel Forrester learns that he’s inherited the massive Scottish Highlands title and estate of a distant relation, the last thing he wants to do is give up the intensity of the battlefield for the too-soft indulgences of noble life. But Gabriel Forrester does not shirk his responsibilities, and when he meets striking, raven-eyed lass Fiona Blackstock, his new circumstances abruptly become more intriguing.

Like any good Highlander, Fiona despises the English—and the new Duke of Lattimer is no exception. Firstly, he is far too attractive for Fiona’s peace of mind. Secondly, his right to “her” castle is a travesty, since it’s been clan Maxwell property for ages. As the two enter a heated battle of wills, an unexpected passion blazes into a love as fierce as the Highlands themselves. Is Fiona strong enough to resist her enemy’s advances—or is Gabriel actually her hero in disguise?

  • House of Salt and Sorrows

House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin Craig

House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin. A Craig is $2.99! This is a retelling of Twelve Dancing Princesses. I talked to Aarya about this one because I know she read it. She said the writing is beautiful, but the story is very dark and not to get into it for the romance.

Get swept away in Erin A. Craig’s mesmerizing House of Salt and Sorrows. As one by one her beautiful sisters mysteriously die on their isolated island estate, Annaleigh must unravel the curse that haunts her family. Be careful who you dance with. . . .

Four of Annaleigh Thaumas’s eleven sisters have returned to the Salt, the brackish water that surrounds their lonely island home, their lives cut short, each more tragically than the last. Whispers throughout the Highmoor estate say the girls have been cursed by the gods.

When Annaleigh finds out that her sisters have been sneaking out to attend glittering midnight balls and dance until dawn, she’s not sure whether to stop them–or join them. And when she begins to see a series of horrific, ghostly visions and more sisters die, she realizes she must solve the mystery–with the help of Cassius, a sea captain who knows much more about her than he should–and unravel the Thaumas curse before she descends into madness or . . . it claims her next.

  • Lady Helena Investigates

Lady Helena Investigates by Jane Steen

Lady Helena Investigates by Jane Steen is 99c! This is the first book in a historical mystery series, which is perfect timing if you’ve exhausted all the current historical mystery series recommendations. Some readers feel like there’s been a glut of releases in that subgenre, but others are always happy to have more options. It has a 4.0-star rating on Goodreads.

A reluctant lady sleuth finds she’s investigating her own family.

Step into Lady Helena Whitcombe’s world with the first novel in a series that will blend family saga and mystery-driven action with a slow-burn romance in seven unputdownable investigations.

1881, Sussex. Lady Helena Scott-De Quincy’s marriage to Sir Justin Whitcombe, three years before, gave new purpose to a life almost destroyed by the death of Lady Helena’s first love. After all, shouldn’t the preoccupations of a wife and hostess be sufficient to fulfill any aristocratic female’s dreams? Such a shame their union wasn’t blessed by children . . . but Lady Helena is content with her quiet country life until Sir Justin is found dead in the river overlooked by their grand baroque mansion.

The intrusion of attractive, mysterious French physician Armand Fortier, with his meddling theory of murder, into Lady Helena’s first weeks of mourning is bad enough. But with her initial ineffective efforts at investigation and her attempts to revive her long-abandoned interest in herbalism comes the realization that she may have been mistaken about her own family’s past. Every family has its secrets—but as this absorbing series will reveal, the Scott-De Quincy family has more than most.

Can Lady Helena survive bereavement the second time around? Can she stand up to her six siblings’ assumption of the right to control her new life as a widow? And what role will Fortier—who, as a physician, is a most unsuitable companion for an earl’s daughter—play in her investigations?

  1. Dottiebears says:

Lady Helena Investigates is a good read for people that like the Lady Darby Series. I found it while looking for something else several months ago and was glad I did

  2. Jennifer in FL says:

I really liked Lady Helena Investigates. It’s not groundbreaking in its cozy mystery-ness, but sometimes you don’t need groundbreaking! I hope the author writes a sequel.

  3. Ren Benton says:

THE MEMORY POLICE by Yoko Ogawa is $2.99.

On an unnamed island off an unnamed coast, objects are disappearing: first hats, then ribbons, birds, roses—until things become much more serious. Most of the island’s inhabitants are oblivious to these changes, while those few imbued with the power to recall the lost objects live in fear of the draconian Memory Police, who are committed to ensuring that what has disappeared remains forgotten.

When a young woman who is struggling to maintain her career as a novelist discovers that her editor is in danger from the Memory Police, she concocts a plan to hide him beneath her floorboards. As fear and loss close in around them, they cling to her writing as the last way of preserving the past.

  4. Melanie says:

More historical mysteries: A number of books in the Brother Cadfael series are $2.99 at Amazon: The Rose Rent, The Heretic’s Apprentice, The Summer of the Danes, The Holy Thief, and the story collection A Rare Benedictine. I’ve been following SB Sarah’s lead in making my way through this series, and I was thrilled to see these books were on sale, because they’re no longer in KU, and normally cost ten or eleven dollars each.

  5. Dreamingintrees says:

Cold Comfort Farm is 1.99! Was very highly reviewed here.

  6. Sandra says:

@Melanie: The Cadfael books are also on sale at BN. I’ve had them all in paper forever, but glad to get the ebook version. The first few were on sale a while back,so now I have most of them.

  7. Cara says:

The Blacksmith Queen by G.A. Aiken is $2.99 on Amazon and price matched elsewhere it seems. I really enjoyed this (and I know that the bitchery did as well) and the second one is slated for the fall.

  8. Cristie says:

Iron and Velvet by Alexis Hall is $1.99 at Amazon right now. I love Hall’s writing so this was a one-click for me.
