Hide Your Wallet

April’s New Releases, Part Two

If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.

Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), but we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.

We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as quickly as the big five.

As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments.

  • Don’t Cry for Me

Don’t Cry for Me by Rachel Lacey

    Author: Rachel Lacey
Released: April 21, 2020 by Rachel Lacey
    Genre: , ,
    Series: Midnight in Manhattan #1

A frosty television host, a bubbly bar owner, and a litter of abandoned kittens. The recipe for ratings gold…or heartbreak?

Eve Marlow has her eyes on the prize: a third season of her popular business makeover show, Do Over. But when her ratings take an unexpected dive, Eve needs a blockbuster new client, or she can kiss season three goodbye. She has her work cut out for her, and that’s before she discovers a litter of newborn kittens in a trash can. Now she’s desperate to find someone to take them so she can concentrate on reviving her career.

Josie Swanson had to put her kitten rescue on the back burner when she inherited her father’s bar two years ago. Since then, she’s invested all her time and energy into keeping it afloat, but despite her best efforts, Swanson’s is going under. When she gets a phone call from Eve Marlow, host of the television show Josie applied to earlier that year, the woman she’s convinced can save her bar, Josie hopes her luck has finally turned.

Eve knows what she needs to succeed, and it isn’t Josie–or her bar. There’s no denying the chemistry sizzling between them, though. Josie’s personality is as vibrant as her turquoise-tipped hair. She stirs things in Eve that haven’t been stirred in a long time, but there’s a reason she keeps her heart under lock and key. Eve stands to lose a lot more than her TV show if she lets her guard down, no matter how tempted she is to see if Josie’s love would be worth the risk.

Tara: Host of a popular business makeover reality show comes into contact with a woman who’s struggling to keep her dad’s bar afloat. Are they brought together because of the show? Nope. The host finds a litter of kittens and the other woman happens to also have a kitten rescue. It’s kind of weird, but I want to know how it all turns out!

  • First Comes Scandal

First Comes Scandal by Julia Quinn

    Author: Julia Quinn
Released: April 21, 2020 by Avon
    Genre: ,
    Series: Rokesbys #4

    She was given two choices…

Georgiana Bridgerton isn’t against the idea of marriage. She’d just thought she’d have some say in the matter. But with her reputation hanging by a thread after she’s abducted for her dowry, Georgie is given two options: live out her life as a spinster or marry the rogue who has ruined her life.

    Enter Option #3

As the fourth son of an earl, Nicholas Rokesby is prepared to chart his own course. He has a life in Edinburgh, where he’s close to completing his medical studies, and he has no time—or interest—to find a wife. But when he discovers that Georgie Bridgerton—his literal girl-next-door—is facing ruin, he knows what he must do.

    A Marriage of Convenience

It might not have been the most romantic of proposals, but Nicholas never thought she’d say no. Georgie doesn’t want to be anyone’s sacrifice, and besides, they could never think of each other as anything more than childhood friends… or could they?

But as they embark upon their unorthodox courtship, they discover a new twist to the age-old rhyme. First comes scandal, then comes marriage. But after that comes love…

Catherine: Oh yes, I am definitely in the mood for a nostalgia/comfort read, and Quinn is pretty reliable for that.

  • Non-Binary Lives

    Non-Binary Lives by Jos Twist

    Author: Jos Twist
Released: April 21, 2020 by Jessica Kingsley Publishers
    Genre: ,

What does it mean to be non-binary in the 21st Century?

Our gender identity is impacted by our personal histories; the cultures, communities and countries we are born into; and the places we go and the people we meet. But the representation of contemporary non-binary identities has been limited, until now.

Pushing the narrative around non-binary identities further than ever before, this powerful collection of essays represents the breadth of non-binary lives, across the boundaries of race, class, age, sexuality, faith and more.

Leading non-binary people share stories of their intersecting lives; how it feels to be non-binary and neurodiverse, the challenges of being a non-binary pregnant person, what it means to be non-binary within the Quaker community, the joy of reaching gender euphoria.

This thought-provoking anthology shows that there is no right or wrong way to be non-binary.

Sneezy: The summary is promising to serve up some intersectional goodness, and I’m here to pounce on all of it. There are thirty plus contributors in this anthology, and I’m SO EXCITED!

  • Pursuing Pandora

    Pursuing Pandora by Maggie Brown

    Author: Maggie Brown
Released: April 21, 2020 by Bella Books
    Genre: , ,

Corporate lawyer Winter Carlyle is the first to admit that she’s become jaded with romance after a very messy public breakup.

When her bossy aunt asks her to visit a high-end nightclub to check on her young cousin, Winter reluctantly agrees. Poking her nose into her cousin’s love life is the last thing she wants to do. So what if he has a giant crush on Pandora, a lounge singer thirteen years his senior? The cougar just might teach him a thing or two.

For Pandora, the sultry siren with the slinky low-cut gown façade is all an act. It’s showbiz. She dislikes the adulation and the numerous advances, especially from the Russian gangster and the aging playboy. Besides, she has an ulterior motive for being at the club, and romance is definitely off the agenda.

But uptight, reserved Winter is a complication she hasn’t foreseen. And even with the best intentions, love has a way of striking at the most inopportune times.

Tara: This book has a corporate lawyer and a lounge singer, which sounds just okay. But the blurb also threw in things like “Russian mobster” and “aging playboy” and said the singer has an ulterior motive for working at the nightclub, so now I have to see what this is all about.

  • The Silence of Bones

The Silence of Bones by June Hur

    Author: June Hur
Released: April 21, 2020 by Feiwel & Friends
    Genre: , ,

June Hur’s elegant and haunting debut The Silence of Bones is a bloody YA historical mystery tale perfect for fans of Kerri Maniscalco and Renée Ahdieh.

    I have a mouth, but I mustn’t speak;
    Ears, but I mustn’t hear;
    Eyes, but I mustn’t see.

1800, Joseon (Korea). Homesick and orphaned sixteen-year-old Seol is living out the ancient curse: “May you live in interesting times.” Indentured to the police bureau, she’s been tasked with assisting a well-respected young inspector with the investigation into the politically charged murder of a noblewoman.

As they delve deeper into the dead woman’s secrets, Seol forms an unlikely bond of friendship with the inspector. But her loyalty is tested when he becomes the prime suspect, and Seol may be the only one capable of discovering what truly happened on the night of the murder.

But in a land where silence and obedience are valued above all else, curiosity can be deadly.

Amanda: This has been on my radar for MONTHS! The waitlist at my library is very long.

Ellen: The blurb makes me stressed but in a good way. Sounds so tense and I’m REALLY interested in a Korea-set historical.

  • Field Guide: Love and Other Natural Disasters

Field Guide: Love and Other Natural Disasters by Six de los Reyes

    Author: Six de los Reyes
    Released: April 22, 2020
    Genre: , ,
    Series: Talking Nerdy #2

Falling in love is nothing short of a natural disaster.

Just ask Phylle, climate scientist on board a research cruise off to unexplored waters. She’s finally on the brink of a personal epiphany—while battling her scientific demons—and she’s determined not to be distracted from her cause.

Dakila knows that what he has is less of a full-time job and more of a calling. As an award-winning journalist, he has stood in the path of typhoons and faced danger head-on in war zones, but nothing could have ever prepared him for the storm that is Phylle.

Phylle and Dakila both understand that saving the Earth means no time for relationships. But every dive and surface interval leads them closer and closer to a different kind of discovery. One neither of them could have ever trained for. Maybe it’s about time they ask themselves: What’s a sustainable future without someone to share it with?

Aarya: This is a #romanceclass title by a Filipino author that I’ve enjoyed before. I confess that the cruise setting makes me cringe a little, but it’ll be okay if I pretend that it’s set before 2020. The climate science aspect sounds amazing.

  • Office Hours

    Office Hours by Katrina Jackson

    Author: Katrina Jackson
    Released: April 24, 2020
    Genre: ,

What’s life like on the tenure track?

For Assistant Professor of Sociology, Dr. Deja Evans, it sucks. Hard. Every day.

Between the class prep, the meetings, grading student work, trying to find time to complete her own research and the meetings, she didn’t have a life, she had a digital calendar that decided whether she got to wallow in her feelings at 3pm or 7pm, on Thursday or maybe Sunday. And the worst meeting of them all was the two-and-a-half-hour, once a month Faculty Senate, which was drier than her dating life, duller than her skin in winter and far longer than her attention span.

The only thing that made those never-ending Faculty Senate meetings bearable was watching Dr. Alejandro Mendoza, Associate Professor of History, breathe. For years, Deja had harbored a kind of secret crush on the sexiest man on campus never thinking that he would ever feel the same, until one unexpected day, they have a steamy after hours encounter in her office and suddenly her life seems much more exciting.

That lasts about half a minute.

Over the course of a hectic academic year, Deja tries to survive her classes, help her students, prepare herself for her third-year review, and most important of all, she has to learn how to get out of her own way and just let Alejandro love her.

Aarya: For those who want a college setting (and perhaps dislike teacher/student and younger MCs), this novella fits the bill.

  • The War Priest

The War Priest by Ann Aguirre

    Author: Ann Aguirre
    Released: April 22, 2020
    Genre: ,
    Series: Ars Numina #5

    Dour. Dutiful. Dogged.

Personal tragedy drove Callum McRae to join the Order of Saint Casimir fifteen years ago; now he’s in charge of a hold he hasn’t lived in for years. Supplies are scarce, he has no knack for dealing with people, and the Gols are at the gates. To make matters worse, he’s also battling an attraction so powerful and forbidden that it imperils his very soul…

    Canny. Cheerful. Charming.

Joss Bristow seems bright and cheerful, but she’s hiding a well of sorrow that fuels her music. She’s also prone to leaping before she looks, exactly how she ends up besieged at Burnt Amber. Though she wanted to get to know Callum better, she never imagined that falling for him could cost her life.

He’s the dark of night, and she’s the sun that shines just for him. Two wounded souls have never needed each other more, but between his holy vows and the devastation of war, the odds are stacked against them…

Aarya: I haven’t caught up on the series, but the first three books are excellent. This one has a grumpy and celibate (for now!) bear.

Tiffani won’t turn down a paying job, but working with Matt stirs up feelings best left buried. What was left behind them is irresistible, but it doesn’t take long to realize that a few hot nights will never be enough. Sex is easy, but forgiveness is not…

Shana: This combines two things I love: a mechanic heroine and a boy in glasses. I’ve enjoyed this author’s other series and I’m hoping this one will be stellar too.

    Genre: ,
    Series: Hollow Crown #1

    I am Renata Convida.
I have lived a hundred stolen lives.
    Now I live my own.

Renata Convida was only a child when she was kidnapped by the King’s Justice and brought to the luxurious palace of Andalucia. As a Robari, the rarest and most feared of the magical Moria, Renata’s ability to steal memories from royal enemies enabled the King’s Wrath, a siege that resulted in the deaths of thousands of her own people.

Now Renata is one of the Whispers, rebel spies working against the crown and helping the remaining Moria escape the kingdom bent on their destruction. The Whispers may have rescued Renata from the palace years ago, but she cannot escape their mistrust and hatred–or the overpowering memories of the hundreds of souls she turned “hollow” during her time in the palace.

When Dez, the commander of her unit, is taken captive by the notorious Sangrado Prince, Renata will do anything to save the boy whose love makes her place among the Whispers bearable. But a disastrous rescue attempt means Renata must return to the palace under cover and complete Dez’s top secret mission. Can Renata convince her former captors that she remains loyal, even as she burns for vengeance against the brutal, enigmatic prince? Her life and the fate of the Moria depend on it.

But returning to the palace stirs childhood memories long locked away. As Renata grows more deeply embedded in the politics of the royal court, she uncovers a secret in her past that could change the entire fate of the kingdom–and end the war that has cost her everything.

Amanda: The magical worlds Cordova creates are some of my favorite.

So, when her unreliable boyfriend is a no-show for a Florida family vacation, Sara recruits Luis Navarro—a gorgeous firefighter paramedic and dive captain willing to play the part of her smitten fiancé . . .

Luis’s big Cuban familia has been in Key West for generations, and his quiet strength feeds off the island’s laidback style. Though guarded after a deep betrayal, he’ll always help someone in need—especially a spunky beauty with a surprising knowledge of Spanish curse words. Soon, he and Sara have memorized their “how we met” story and are immersed in family dinners, bike tours, private snorkeling trips . . . sharing secrets, and slow, melting kisses. But when it’s time for Sara to return home, will their island romance last or fade with the stunning sunset?

Elyse: Since I won’t be traveling any time soon, I’d like a vicarious island getaway. Also the heroine in this book is in recovery from an eating disorder and I’m interested to see how that is handled.

Aarya: I’m a fan of Oliveras’s previous trilogy and this looks so good!

    Genre: ,
    Series: The Rogue Files #6

Continuing her bestselling Rogue Files series, Sophie Jordan brews up a scintillating romance about a timid wallflower who discovers a love potion and ends up falling for a dashing rogue.

    A love potion…

Charlotte Langley has always been the prudent middle sister, so her family is not surprised when she makes the safe choice and agrees to wed her childhood sweetheart. But when she finds herself under the weather and drinks a “healing” tonic, the potion provokes the most maddening desire…for someone other than her betrothed.

    With the power…

Kingston’s rakehell ways are going to destroy him and he’s vowed to changeHis stepbrother’s remote estate is just the place for a reformed rogue to hide. The last thing he wants is to be surrounded by society, but when he gets stuck alone with a wallflower who is already betrothed… and she astonishes him with a fiery kiss, he forgets all about hiding.

    To alter two destinies.

Although Charlotte appears meek, Kingston soon discovers there’s a vixen inside, yearning to break free. Unable to forget their illicit moment of passion, Kingston vows to relive the encounter, but Charlotte has sworn it will never happen again—no matter how earth-shattering it was. But will a devilish rogue tempt her to risk everything for a chance at true love?

Elyse: A forced proximity romance that I’ve heard great things about on Twitter.

Plan for the Worst by Jodi Taylor! Hope for the Best was my favorite book of 2019, so I’m poised to leap on this one.

  2. SandraL says:

The silence of bones looks so good! But the link needs to be fixed.

  3. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Some of my favorite authors have books scheduled for publication in the next two weeks:

HIS by Natasha Knight and A. Zavarelli is scheduled for April 21. It’s the second book of the duet that started with MINE: dark/mafia/secret baby/on the run from bad guys (although this being a “dark/bratva” romance, the hero is no angel either).

I didn’t realize Molly O’Keefe had started a new series until I saw (and downloaded) THE SINNER yesterday. The series is called Notorious and the next book, THE GAMBLER, is scheduled for April 27.

Also scheduled for April 27 is Kati Wilde’s long-anticipated, much-postponed LOSING IT ALL (the latest in her Hellfire Riders MC series). Clear the decks! I’ve been waiting for Stone & Cherry’s story since it was set up so beautifully at the end of BREAKING IT ALL (in 2016!). I’m just hoping this will not be a case of BROOKLYNAIRE Syndrome where I’ve waited for a couple’s story for so long that when I finally read the book, it’s a bit of a letdown. Please don’t do that to me, Kati!

Annika Martin’s THE BILLIONAIRE’S FAKE FIANCÉE is scheduled for April 28. I loved the first two books in Martin’s Billionaire series (MOST ELIGIBLE BILLIONAIRE and THE BILLIONAIRE’S WAKE-UP-CALL GIRL) but found the last one, BREAKING THE BILLIONAIRE’S RULES, to have too great a power imbalance for my taste, so I’m hoping this new romance (obviously a “fake relationship” trope) rights the ship.

Finally, Skye Warren’s short story collection, WHO WILL SAVE YOUR SOUL, which was scheduled for earlier this month, has been moved to April 28. Warren is one of my favorite “dark romance” writers and expecting more of her dark, transgressive work in this collection.

Sigh. Just when I can sort of, maybe, see the end of my TBR list happening sometime this year, you come out with another list.

“Island Affair” – As a Floridian (northeast, not Key West, but still), I’m honor-bound to one-click this

“Office Hours” – Obviously a must-read, as it sounds similar to Noelle Adams’ Milford College short novels. Dare I hope that this will also become a series?

“Starbreaker” – book 1 is on my TBR list for this month, so… preordering book 2. Damn you, Hide Your Wallet!

  5. TinaNoir says:

Just the description of ‘Office Hours’ gives me all kinds of tingles. I work in Higher Ed and it is rare I get a romance novel set there that isn’t from the perspective of the student and isn’t just wallpaper setting. Usually I have to go outside of romance, like Richard Russo’s ‘Straight Man’ or Jane Smiley’s ‘Moo.’

This sounds right up my alley.

  6. Amanda says:

    @SandraL: Fixed! Thank you.

  7. Ren Benton says:

GHOST MONEY (ERIC CARTER #5) by Stephen Blackmoore is the only thing on my list. Interested in how he transitions from the focus on Aztec mythology for the past several books to Chinese mythology in this one.

  8. Star says:

I went to preorder Office Hours (a romance set in academia from an author who seems to understand how academia works?!), but Amazon claims I have already bought it, except that a) it’s not showing as my having already bought it when I go to the book’s page and b) I can’t find any indication that this was previously published under a different title. Anyone else experience this, or is it just me?

  9. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Star: I had a similar problem with a freebie anthology I was trying to download a while back. It turned out the anthology I was trying to download was credited to the same author(s) and had the same title and some (but not all) of the same stories as the one previously downloaded. I never did figure out a workaround. If Amazon gives you the date you supposedly already purchased OFFICE HOURS, you can sort your kindle library (assuming this was a kindle purchase) by acquisition date and see what book(s) you downloaded that day. That may either solve or deepen the mystery.

  10. DonnaMarie says:

Wait! Is SHE the mechanic? I thought my new release list was complete, but not if there’s a book about a woman running a shop restoring Detroit muscle cars? I am so breaking the budget. It had better be one of three cars, or I will be sooooo disappointed. There’s only a couple of good car centric series out there so I’m always up for a new one.

  11. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@DonnaMarie: A word of caution—the first book in the series, HARD CHROME, received a DNF review at SBTB:

  12. Lisa F says:

Flying Gold, the Quinn and Girl Gone Viral are all absolutely perfect; I’ve read and reviewed all of them.

Jordan’s last few have disappointed me.

  13. MaryK says:

I’ve preordered The War Priest and the new Kati Wilde is on my list, though I feel like I need to do a reread of the series beforehand since it’s been a while.

  14. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@MaryK: At least a reread of BREAKING IT ALL would be in order, I would think. Stone & Cherry’s story is really set-up during the course of that book (although we don’t see anything from their POV), especially at the end.

  15. Susan says:

@MirandaB: Oooh, oooh, oooh. Happy noises. I preordered this last year and forgot it was coming out this month. Taylor has never disappointed me. I always read her books then listen to the audios–both versions are wonderful.

  16. DonnaMarie says:

    @TripleD, noooooo!

Well, at least the budget is safe. I will take your cautionary reminder to heart and wait until it’s cheaper or available through the GBPL.

  17. kt says:

I pre-ordered Office Hours on Kindle with no problem — Star, I hope you can get it! I’m excited — having spent 6 years as a college prof, I just cannot read teacher-student romances. I taught way too many freshmen and it just does not work for me.

If you are looking for other good academic non-young-people romances, Charish Reid’s Heart on Hold was pretty good if you could overlook the first seduction scene (that first scene was for me the equivalent of sex on a beach — a really nice idea if you don’t think about the sand in places you don’t want/the seduction in the workplace 🙂 As it was between two grown and professional adults with no power differential, I was fine enjoying it.) The rest of Hearts on Hold was just great and it got a good review here at SBTB as well. I hope the other female friends in Hearts on Hold get their own books….

  18. denise says:

I’ve been reading an ARC of Girl Gone Viral–not a street team member–and have been enjoying it.

  19. taffygrrl says:

REALLY hoping Don’t Cry For Me lands on Kobo, because that sounds like something I would love!

  20. Blackjack says:

I read an arc of Girl Gone Viral but did not like it very much in the end. I was expecting a deeper dive into the main problem set up in the first chapter, which is privacy violation on social media. Instead, the book uses it as a jumping off point for the romance and the resolution of the social media problem is more or less shoved aside and then settled in a kind of shallow way at the end of the book. It’s an interesting topic to explore though and I can see other books taking it on.
