  • The Matrimonial Advertisement

The Matrimonial Advertisement by Mimi Matthews

The Matrimonial Advertisement by Mimi Matthews is 99c! This is the first book in the Parish Orphans of Devon series and it’s a Victorian historical romance. It also has a marriage of convenience. Readers say this has a Gothic element, which they loved. However, others felt the book couldn’t decide if it wanted to be a mystery or a romance.

    She Wanted Sanctuary…

Helena Reynolds will do anything to escape her life in London, even if that means traveling to a remote cliffside estate on the North Devon coast and marrying a complete stranger. But Greyfriar’s Abbey isn’t the sort of refuge she imagined. And ex-army captain Justin Thornhill–though he may be tall, dark, and devastatingly handsome–is anything but a romantic hero.

    He Needed Redemption…

Justin has spent the last two decades making his fortune, settling scores, and suffering a prolonged period of torture in an Indian prison. Now, he needs someone to smooth the way for him with the villagers. Someone to manage his household–and warm his bed on occasion. What he needs, in short, is a wife and a matrimonial advertisement seems the perfect way to acquire one.

Their marriage was meant to be a business arrangement and nothing more. A dispassionate union free from the entanglements of love and affection. But when Helena’s past threatens, will Justin’s burgeoning feelings for his new bride compel him to come to her rescue? Or will dark secrets of his own force him to let her go?

  • In a Badger Way

In a Badger Way by Shelly Laurenston

In a Badger Way by Shelly Laurenston is $2.99! This is the second book in the Honey Badgers series and I even made a special cocktail for it! Laurenston’s books are very much over the top with lots of improbable scenarios. Sometimes, that may just be what you need. The third book is out later this month!

Petite, kind, brilliant, and young, Stevie is nothing like the usual women bodyguard Shen Li is interested in. Even more surprising, the youngest of the lethal, ball-busting, and beautiful MacKilligan sisters is terrified of bears. But she’s not terrified of pandas. She loves pandas.

Which means that whether Shen wants her to or not, she simply won’t stop cuddling him. He isn’t some stuffed Giant Panda, ya know! He is a Giant Panda shifter. He deserves respect and personal space. Something that little hybrid is completely ignoring.

But Stevie has a way of finding trouble. Like going undercover to take down a scientist experimenting on other shifters. For what, Shen doesn’t want to know, but they’d better find out. And fast. Stevie might be the least violent of the honey badger sisters, but she’s the most dangerous to Shen’s peace of mind. Because she has absolutely no idea how much trouble they’re in . . . or just how damn adorable she is.

  • Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe

Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe by Heather Webber

Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe by Heather Webber is $2.99! This seems to be women’s fiction with some magical realism and yummy food descriptions. Seeing as I love Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen a lot, this should be right up my alley, but I’ve been hesitant to add it to my TBR.

Nestled in the mountain shadows of Alabama lies the little town of Wicklow. It is here that Anna Kate has returned to bury her beloved Granny Zee, owner of the Blackbird Café.

It was supposed to be a quick trip to close the café and settle her grandmother’s estate, but despite her best intentions to avoid forming ties or even getting to know her father’s side of the family, Anna Kate finds herself inexplicably drawn to the quirky Southern town her mother ran away from so many years ago, and the mysterious blackbird pie everybody can’t stop talking about.

As the truth about her past slowly becomes clear, Anna Kate will need to decide if this lone blackbird will finally be able to take her broken wings and fly.

  • Bound by Night

Bound by Night by Amanda Ashley

Bound by Night by Amanda Ashley is $1.99 at select vendors! This is the first book in the Bound paranormal romance series and seems to have some Beauty and the Beast elements. Some readers felt the heroine was a bit naive and TSTL for their liking, while many recommend this one for lovers of vampire romances.

    A Vampire’s Kiss Is Forever. . .

Once featured in a horror movie, the crumbling Wolfram estate is said to be haunted by ghosts, witches, and worse. But Elena doesn’t believe a word of it—until she spends the night and wakes up in the arms of a compelling stranger. . .

Tall, dark, and disturbingly handsome, Drake is the most beautiful man Elena has ever seen. For centuries, he has lived alone, and Elena is the first woman to enter his lair—and survive. And Drake is the first man to touch her heart and soul. By the time she discovers who he really is—and what he craves—it’s too late. Blood lust has turned to love, and Elena is deeply under Drake’s spell. But forever comes at a price for each of them. . .

  1. Heberta says:

The Matrimonial Advertisement doesn’t really have any sex, but isn’t an inspie, so if that’s anyone’s jam, it’s a good choice.

  2. Sarah Peach says:

I really loved The Matrimonial Advertisement and as Heberta said, there’s no sex…which is fine, but as I’m a dirty bird it was a minor disappointment. But it was a great book, very catnip for me otherwise! According to my GR review it has a bit of a BATB element, some Gothic vibes, a grumpy but good hero and a brave heroine…*heart eyes*

  3. Vår says:

I love all I have read so far by Mimi Matthews! In spite of the lack of sexy-times. She is truly brilliant, and I can not recommend her books enough!

  4. Silver James says:

I LOVED “Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe.” I don’t gush over many books, but this is the first paragraph of my 5-star Goodreads review:

    I. Loved. This. Book! It’s as sweet as the scent of magnolia blossoms on a hot summer day and as sassy as mint tea. It is magical and lyrical. The characters are true and each has a journey. There’s a cat and a bird and a good dog named River. There’s birth and death and promises to keep. There are old wrongs and new rights. There’s laying the past to rest and waking up the future. There’s sorrow and joy, hellos and goodbyes. And beneath it all, there’s the love that comes from mulberries, blackbirds, and pie.

My previous comment is under moderation. I was so excited about MIDNIGHT AT THE BLACKBIRD CAFE, I may have forgotten to close my html code, which would probably screw with the comments to follow. No one wants everything in italics. My bad! (And if one of the true bitchery can get in there and close that with a (minus spaces because not sure how more html might mess things up. LOL Anyway, sorry.

  6. Lisa F says:

I agree that Mimi Matthews’ work is the best.

  7. EJ says:

I just finished Matrimonial Advertisement and found I didn’t miss the sexy times, but there was one part where they cuddled and then they never did again and that made me sad.

Apparently, I need more cuddling in my books.
