  • In for a Penny

In for a Penny by Rose Lerner

RECOMMENDED: In for a Penny by Rose Lerner is $1.99! We had a guest review for this one, where it earned a B+:

I was reading In for a Penny one evening and my husband asked me if I was coming to bed anytime soon. I made incoherent too-invested-in-my-book-for-sleep noises, and he looked at me knowingly.

He thought her money was the end of his problems, but it was just the beginning…

Young Lord Nevinstoke enjoys every moment of his deep-gaming, hard-drinking, womanizing life. Then his father is killed in a drunken duel, and Nev inherits a mountain of debts and responsibilities. He vows to leave his wild friends and his mistress behind, start acting respectable—and marry a rich girl.

Penelope Brown, a manufacturing heiress, seems the perfect choice. She’s pretty, ladylike, good at accounting, and looking for a marriage based on companionship and mutual esteem, not love. In fact, the only rash thing she’s ever done in her life is accept Nev’s proposal.

When the newlyweds arrive at Nev’s family estate, they discover that all the respectability and reason in the world won’t be enough to handle a hostile next-door neighbor, mutinous tenants, and Nev’s family’s propensity for scandal. In way over their heads, Nev and Penelope have no one to turn to but each other—but to their surprise, that just might be enough.

  • Trying to Score

Trying to Score by Toni Aleo

Trying to Score by Toni Aleo is $1.99! This is the second book in the Nashville Assassins sports romance series and features a second chance romance. Readers seemed pretty divided on whether the heroine wasn’t good enough for the hero or vice versa. Have you read this one?

In a captivating novel of second chances and healing hearts, the newest member of the Nashville Assassins pulls a power play to make things right with the one that got away.

Fallon Parker’s dream has always been to turn her family’s wine company into a runaway success and eventually start a cellar of her own. Since graduating from college, she has worked relentlessly to make that dream a reality, especially after taking a chance on love—and losing. By the time Fallon becomes an official sponsor of the Nashville Assassins, she feels like all her hard work is finally paying off. And then the man who broke her heart skates back into her life.

On the ice, Lucas Brooks is the NHL’s leading scorer—at least when he’s not in the box. Off the ice, he’s a mess, with all his anger and misery bottled up inside. He threw away the most important person in his life and has regretted it ever since. But when Lucas returns to Nashville in a trade, he’s determined to convince Fallon that he’s a changed man. The attraction is still there. The tension is electrifying. But the odds are stacked against them—especially after Lucas finds out that Fallon has been keeping a devastating secret.

  • Sweet Talk

    Sweet Talk by Julie Garwood

Sweet Talk by Julie Garwood is $1.99! This is the tenth installment in the Buchanan-Renard romantic suspense series, though I believe it can be read as a standalone. Admittedly, I’ve never been able to get into Garwood’s contemporaries, but I have friends who are big fans.

Attorney and IRS agent Olivia Mackenzie is the kind of tough, wise-cracking, powerful woman fans expect from a Garwood protagonist—but this time she has outdone herself. Olivia is not just any woman, she is every woman; flawed in the familiar ways so many of us are.

On the trail of an elaborate Ponzi scheme, one that threatens to ruin the lives of naïve and unsuspecting victims, Olivia suddenly finds her own life is in danger after she asks questions of the wrong people. She is accustomed to fighting for the underdog, but being vulnerable herself is a very different story. Smart enough to know when enough is enough, Olivia calls for reinforcements.

When she meets FBI Agent Grayson Kincaid there is an immediate and obvious attraction, palpable on both sides. Together they make an excellent team to fight corruption but Olivia is also fighting the immediate and intense attraction she feels for Agent Kincaid, and that may be a battle she is bound to lose.

  • The Wolf in the Whale

The Wolf in the Whale by Jordanna Max Brodsky

The Wolf in the Whale by Jordanna Max Brodsky is $2.99! This was a highly anticipated release on the site, given Sarah’s enjoyment of Brodsky’s books in the past. However, there is a very graphic rape scene in the book, which put a lot of us off. If you want more details about this, I highly recommend looking through Goodreads reviews.

The heroic journey of an Inuit shaman and a Viking warrior in an epic tale of survival, love, and clashing gods in the frozen Arctic of 1000 AD.

Born with the soul of a hunter and the language of the gods, Omat is destined to become a shaman like her grandfather. To protect her people, she invokes the spirits of the sky, the sea, and the air.

But the gods have stopped listening, the seals won’t come, and Omat’s family is starving.

Desperate to save them, Omat journeys through the icy wastes, fighting for survival with every step. When she meets a Viking warrior and his strange new gods, together they set in motion a conflict that could shatter her world…or save it.

The Wolf in the Whale is a powerful tale of magic, discovery and adventure, featuring an unforgettable narrator ready to confront the gods themselves.

  1. Jeannette says:

While not my favorite of Garwood’s modern stories (that would be Mercy) Sweet Talk has a great Garwoodesque exchange (it is near the beginning):

Distraught to have his investigation fall apart, Agent Poole stepped closer and said, “Listen, you. Don’t threaten me. I could make your life a nightmare.” He put his hand in front of her face and unfolded three fingers as he said, “I’m F…B…I.”
She smiled. It wasn’t the reaction he expected. “You want to talk nightmares?” she said. She put her hand up to his face and unfolded her three fingers. “I’m I…R…S.”

@jeannette I screamed at that line!

  3. DiscoDollyDeb says:

One of my daughters will be taking her CPA exams over the summer. She wants to be a forensic accountant and work for the FBI or the IRS. I had to forward the link to the Garwood book to her!

  4. filkferengi says:

@DiscoDollyDeb, I strongly recommend Diane Kelly’s Tara Holloway mysteries, the _Death, Taxes_ series: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F7NJPKT? There’s some wonderful IRS snark [from the IRS-agent characters] and strong romance elements.
