Historicals Romances and a Cowboy

  • This Scot of Mine

This Scot of Mine by Sophie Jordon

This Scot of Mine by Sophie Jordan is $1.99! This is part of the Rogue Files historical romance series. The description mentions a marriage of convenience, but also sounds hella angsty. Readers enjoyed the chemistry between the main characters, though felt the plot was paper thin.

    A daring deception…

Desperate to escape her vile fiancé, Lady Clara devises a bold lie—that she’s pregnant with another man’s child. With her reputation in tatters, Clara flees to Scotland to live out her days in disgrace, resigned to her fate as a spinster…until she claps eyes on the powerful and wickedly handsome Laird Hunt MacLarin.

She’s the answer to his curse…

Laird of an ancient clan, Hunt needs an heir, but he comes from a long line of men cursed to die before the birth of their firstborn. When the Duke of Autenberry approaches him with a proposition—marry my ruined sister—it seems the perfect solution. Even better, the defiant lass stirs him to his very soul.

    No escaping the truth…

Except marriage cannot set them free. No matter how much Hunt desires her. No matter how much Clara burns for him. Soon she is falling for her husband, but is love enough to end the curse? Or is the tragic history of the MacLarin Clan doomed to repeat itself?

  • Buck Wild

    Buck Wild by Lauren Landish

Buck Wild by Lauren Landish is $1.99 at Amazon! This is the first book in the Bennett Boys Ranch series and a book I’m really curious about. I’m always iffy on cowboys. The second book is also on sale.

From Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author Lauren Landish comes a hard-riding romance of cowboys who run wild—and the women who tame them…

Bull rider James Bennett lives for those eight seconds of exhilaration. A rodeo cowboy in his prime, all he wants out of life is something to straddle. That’s why James is feeling a little restless, spending his summer off working his family’s ranch. That is, until a spirited and gorgeous veterinarian-in-training shows up and puts the cocky wild boy—and his ego—in place. Though she’s a feisty one, James is always up for a challenge.

Sophie Stone has to admit it: James Bennett is a checklist of cowboy hotness—ruggedly handsome with piercing blue eyes, a hard-muscled body, and just enough swagger to make her toes curl. She thought she was done with her bad-boy phase, but exceptions must be made.

How can Sophie possibly say no to a man who makes her heart buck like a bronco? And when their summer fling comes to an end, how can she possibly say goodbye?

  • My Sweet Folly

My Sweet Folly by Laura Kinsale

My Sweet Folly by Laura Kinsale is $1.99! This book sounds absolutely bananas. Readers really loved the heroine and how witty she was. However, given the bananas quality of the book, some said the pacing is a bit all over the place. Have you read this one?

An innocent long-distance correspondence leads to complications in this Regency romance by the New York Times–bestselling author of For My Lady’s Heart.

Married to an elderly man, Folie Hamilton finds her lonely days brightened by light-hearted letters from her husband’s cousin, Lt. Robert Cambourne, stationed in Calcutta for the British East India Company. Robert calls her his princess, and she dubs him her knight errant. Unbidden love blossoms, yet upon the death of her husband, Robert’s last letter shatters her heart with three words: I am married.

Four years later, Robert summons Folie and her stepdaughter to his estate in England. The girl is his ward, so they must go. The man who greets them, however, is nothing like the charming lieutenant of his letters. This Robert is demented. Screaming at ghosts in demonic rage, he is paranoid and frightening. Yet her body longs to caress his perfect features, to hold his tall, angular body, to find the man who once captured her heart . . .

Someone is poisoning him, spinning his brain into madness, of that Robert is sure, but who—and why? Haunted by his dead wife, the one thing his tortured mind understands is that he must keep Folie safe. Folie, with her beautiful expressive eyes, the only warmth in his nightmare world . . .

Nominated for a RITA award, My Sweet Folly is another unforgettable love story filled with passion and suspense from the author of Flowers From the Storm, whose work has been praised by Julia Quinn as “unfailingly brilliant and beautiful.”

  • How to Cross a Marquess

How to Cross a Marquess by Jane Ashford

How to Cross a Marquess by Jane Ashford is $2.99! This seems to have a lot of catnip: enemies to lovers, meddling family, childhood history, neighbors. However, the book description is rather sparse and I wish there were more explanation on the central conflict.

The Marquess of Chatton and his neighbor Fenella Fairclough have known each other all their lives. They refused to marry each other years ago when their parents demanded it, and they won’t concede now―even if circumstances have brought these former enemies much closer than they ever could have anticipated…

All Laura Kinsale’s plots are completely bananas. Never try to summarize one of her books for someone else.

They make *perfect sense* while you are reading the book.

And, yes, I like My Sweet Folly, but I like the licentious Duke/mathematician, Quaker, stroke, mental hospital, etc., book better. (Er, that would be Flowers from the Storm.)

That sounds like an amazing book. I would totally read it based on that description.

You should! One of my favorite books ever!

“I’m always iffy on cowboys.” Same, same.

I remember liking My Sweet Folly but don’t remember many details about it. It’s epistolary at the beginning, and he is being poisoned. IIRC, the heroine is instrumental in un-poisoning him. Oh, and the hero teaches the heroine sex slang.

Laura Kinsale.. I love her books, just love them. I wish she were still writing. Why did she stop? Does anyone know?

I liked the epistolary portion of My Sweet Folly but liked the latter part of the book to a lesser degree. (I prefer Flowers from the Storm.)

I get the impression she felt overwhelmed and burnt out.

Speaking of cowboys, One Texan is Enough by Sarah Storme is free today, and I think Friday. The romance moves a bit too quickly for my taste, but they have some cute banter about cowboys when the Boston single mother in Texas meets the “cowboy” construction worker (widowed father of four).

This Scot of Mine is um. Rather bad. Rather very bad. And instead of being angsty it’s goofy because of how the ‘curse’ plays out on both of the characters.

The Kinsale is my favorite flavor of crazysauce TBH.

    Laura says:

I know I’ve read My Sweet Folly, but I can’t for the life of me remember the plot! Everytime I’ve tried to reread it, I can’t make it past the letters part in the beginning.

I wish Laura Kinsale would write another book, I miss the excitement of reading one of her books for the first time. She would be a one-click full price author for me.
