  • Clean Sweep

    Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews

Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews is 99c at Amazon! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. I’ve heard good things about this book and it has a mix of scifi and paranormal elements, and I really don’t know why I’m dragging my feet on reading this series. It isn’t price-matched yet, but maybe later!

On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast. But Dina is…different: Her broom is a deadly weapon; her Inn is magic and thinks for itself. Meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors, the only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who can’t leave the grounds because she’s responsible for the deaths of millions and someone might shoot her on sight. Under the circumstances, “normal” is a bit of a stretch for Dina.

And now, something with wicked claws and deepwater teeth has begun to hunt at night…Feeling responsible for her neighbors, Dina decides to get involved. Before long, she has to juggle dealing with the annoyingly attractive, ex-military, new neighbor, Sean Evans—an alpha-strain werewolf—and the equally arresting cosmic vampire soldier, Arland, while trying to keep her inn and its guests safe. But the enemy she’s facing is unlike anything she’s ever encountered before. It’s smart, vicious, and lethal, and putting herself between this creature and her neighbors might just cost her everything.

  • Good Earls Don’t Lie

Good Earls Don’t Lie by Michelle Willingham

Good Earls Don’t Lie by Michelle Willingham is 99c at Amazon and is another one of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. This is the first book in the Earls Next Door series. Readers enjoyed the hero and heroine, but found the action stalled after the initial setup.

Lady Rose Thornton never expected to find a half-naked man in her garden. The handsome Irishman claims to be the Earl of Ashton, but was Iain Donovan truly robbed by thieves? Or is he merely an impoverished stranger lying to her?

After losing everything in the potato famine, Iain is searching for a wife whose dowry will save his estate. The beautiful and charming Lady Rose, unable to walk because of an illness that stole her strength, agrees to help him find a wife, but only if he will help her learn to take her first steps.

As their friendship takes root and blossoms into something more, secrets about Iain’s birthright threaten the growing feelings between them. He has no right to love a woman like Rose, who deserves a better life than he can give her. Rose believes that there is more to Iain than a broken past, and she brings light to his shadows.

Within the walls of a secret garden, sometimes miracles happen…

  • The Gilded Wolves

The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi

The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi is $2.99! This is the first book in Chokshi’s new series, which released in January. I love Chokshi’s writing and it seems this book only showcases her talents even more, but some mentioned getting impatient for things to happen.

Set in a darkly glamorous world, The Gilded Wolves is full of mystery, decadence, and dangerous but thrilling adventure.

Paris, 1889: The world is on the cusp of industry and power, and the Exposition Universelle has breathed new life into the streets and dredged up ancient secrets. In this city, no one keeps tabs on secrets better than treasure-hunter and wealthy hotelier, Séverin Montagnet-Alarie. But when the all-powerful society, the Order of Babel, seeks him out for help, Séverin is offered a treasure that he never imagined: his true inheritance.

To find the ancient artifact the Order seeks, Séverin will need help from a band of experts: An engineer with a debt to pay. A historian who can’t yet go home. A dancer with a sinister past. And a brother in all but blood, who might care too much.

Together, they’ll have to use their wits and knowledge to hunt the artifact through the dark and glittering heart of Paris. What they find might change the world, but only if they can stay alive.

  • Not of This World

Not of This World by Tracy St. John

Not of This World by Tracy St. John is $1.99! This is the first book in a sci-fi romance series. Readers say this has some great sexual tension and chemistry between the main characters, but that there are a lot of plot threads to keep straight. Also, I think the cover model’s stripes are creating this weird illusion where his neck seems incredibly long.

He was her savior, but she was his salvation.

Jeannie Gardner escapes from her captors’ clutches only to find herself trapped on a planet far from Earth. When she is discovered by a muscle-bound warrior, she must prove to him, and the Council of Elders, that she is not a creature set free from a lab, but a sentient being from another planet.

If she succeeds, they will send her home. If she fails, she will be executed.

Risnar warrior Kren Bolep is duty bound to protect his village from the Monsuda and their creations. But this small pink-skinned female is different, special. As the bond between them grows, Jeannie’s vulnerability invokes Kren’s protective instincts, and he vows to uncover the truth and secure her future.

But there is a bigger threat looming. The Monsuda are coming to get Jeannie, and they’ll use whatever means necessary. When Jeannie is taken, Kren is forced to choose—disobey the Elders and place his people in danger, or lose the only person who makes him feel whole.

  1. Lostshadows says:

I have been meaning to give The Gilded Wolves another shot. I borrowed the audiobook from my library, but something about it didn’t work for me. (I no longer remember what.)

  2. NomadiCat says:

Put me down as a recommendation for CLEAN SWEEP. This is the series Ilona Andrews writes entirely for self-published fun and it’s interesting to see where they choose to go. It’s a weird little sci-fi series that feels a bit like a fantasy novel, with the Ilona Andrews trademark badass, practical woman, challenging men, and funky found family elements. The series has a passionate cult following for a reason and any Ilona Andrews fans who haven’t read it yet are in for a treat.

  3. SandraH says:

I love the Sweep series by Ilona Andrews. There are four of them. I definitely recommend this book. It was a lot of fun.

  4. Ariadna says:

Like all of Ilona Andrew’s books, Clean Sweep is milder (when compared to, say, the Hidden Legacies and Kate Daniels series). BUT it is still a really fun read.

The Gilded Wolves was fine…despite having a try-hard vibe that took a while to dissipate. I wasn’t super impressed by it, but I will deffo go ahead and read the next book.

FWIW, all of the people I know have loved the Six of Crows series never really connected to The Gilded Wolves. #NotAStatementofFactJustAnOpinion

(I haven’t read Doc yet because I am taking my time reading Grishaverse novels)

  5. Laurel says:

Run, do not walk, and download Clean Sweep – you will not regret it. For 99 cents, it is a steal.

  6. Laurel says:

I just checked out the Amazon deals today and, while it is not a romance, I highly recommend Old Man’s War by John Scalzi. Really interesting and fun science fiction.

  7. Ren Benton says:

Another one of my top 10 reads last year, THE ARMORED SAINT by Myke Cole is $2.99. Young Heloise attracts the attention of a zealous army that slaughters entire villages upon suspicion of harboring mages and accidentally becomes a “chosen one.” It’s bloody and tragic, so stay far away if you need good-vibes reading, but it’s an excellent David and Goliath/female rage story. Cole is a military guy who doesn’t romanticize war and focuses on human feeling and cost. And the trilogy is finished so you can binge if you like this one.

  8. Michelle says:

I’m with Laurel. Scalzi is so very very readable. While Old Man’s War isn’t a romance, there is a bit of an element.

    Clean Sweep is fun too.

  9. Jeannette says:

FYI – make sure you don’t already own Clean Sweep – there are two Amazon pages out there:
    New one ($.99)- https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01KZM2J9M
    Original page ($4.99)- https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H2R11PM/ref=kinw_myk_ro_title

The original page tells me I own the book, the new one doesn’t. Of course its a great book, but 2 copies not so much.

  10. Lisa F says:

Whelp, Clean Sweep and Good Earls Don’t Lie are going on the TBR pile.

  11. mel burns says:

Clean Sweep is an okay first book. I’ve read it once, but the other three books in the series I’ve read multiple times. One Fell Sweep is an extraordinary story and Sweep of the Blade has a kick ass heroine. A good series to read during the holidays.

  12. DiscoDollyDeb says:

John Scalzi (OLD MAN’S WAR) also writes an interesting blog called WHATEVER. It’s worth a look even if you’re not a big SF fan:

  13. Sandra says:

@NomadiCat: Ilona Andrews just announced on their blog that Iron & Magic is on sale for $2.99. Just at Amazon right now, but should be available on other venues shortly.

  14. Sarah Peach says:

The One You Fight For, the 3rd book of The Ones Who Got Away series by Roni Loren is $1.99 on Amazon. It’s a great series (tw: past gun violence, trauma).

  15. Leigh Kramer says:

Love, love, love The Gilded Wolves! I can’t wait to read the second book.

@Ariadna, I haven’t heard that about Gilded Wolves vs. Six Of Crows! I love both.

  16. Taylor says:

Another vote for Clean Sweep (and its sequels). So good! Calpurnia!

  17. NomadiCat says:

@Sandra: EEEEE!!! I love IRON & MAGIC so very, very much. I’m delighted it’s on sale so other people can discover it.

Friends, if you’re craving a… um… “romance” between two Slytherins (their theme song is totally “Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish) with tropes that include a marriage of convenience, found family, and more snarky morally gray characters than you can shake a stick at, grab this book!

Disclaimer: The, um, “hero” in this book was the Big Bad for much of Ilona Andrews’ KATE DANIELS series. Hugh was a warlord, and was great at being a bad guy. This book forces Hugh to confront some of the terrible things he did (and why he did them) head on and does not gloss over them. He may not be everyone’s cuppa, but I thought they handled his journey to The Road That Might Eventually Lead To Redemption Maybe If He Doesn’t Screw It Up very well. And the audiobook is delightful!

  18. Joy says:

Ilona Andrews has a couple of little series other than KATE DANIELS. The Innkeeper series starting with CLEAN SWEEP just gets better and better. SWEEP OF THE BLADE is great! I love the portrait of this complex world and am in love with the heroine’s daughter. The KINSMAN UNIVERSE is equally intriguing. I read some of them free and then bought copies to re-read on my Kindle. AND so on. This couple are very talented writers.

I got kind of tired of Kate Daniels in the later books but like the creativity of their other series. I know it is tempting keep writing with familiar characters and setting but….time and again I’ve seen creativity begin to fail and series become less satisfying.

  19. MegS says:

Late to the party to continue the “if you like fantasy and Ilona Andrews, grab Clean Sweep!” Train.

It’s a good intro to the series, though I like the next three books better, once the initial world building is established. ALSO, they just released preorders for a holiday novella in the series (book 5), which will release 1/14 (I think).

Also here to squee about GILDED WOLVES. It’s so good. And I can’t wait for the follow-up (due out in Feb?). The audio was super fun, too. It’s complex, has strong world building, and has a great overall voice.
