Links: Dogs, Mister Global, & More

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses. It’s October! Yay! My spooky self is so ready. But this also means there are only three months left of 2019 and they’re stupidly packed with holiday obligations, which aren’t my favorite things.

Are you a fan of October? Or are you more like my boyfriend and think the best weather is summer weather?

Did you see we made O, The Oprah Magazine‘s online list of 21 best book podcasts?! The list is fantastic and we’re honored to be named alongside some awesome podcasts.

Frolic Media has teamed up with Tapas to launch an adorable webcomic 100 Days in Europe! The artwork is super cute, though I wish the display wasn’t just one big image.

I had a good cry reading the profiles of the dogs rescued from Michael Vick’s dogfighting ring. A majority of the dogs were adopted out and lived out the remainder of their lives in comfort.

Did you see that we’ve launched our BookFinder? Now, you can search our database of over 7,000 books to find your perfect catnip cocktail.

Have a moment of zen with these photos of Mister Global contestants. I’m so disappointed in USA’s choice of costume, but…what up, Panama? How you doin’?

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

    Great links this week!

Btw, I can empathize with your costume-disappointment; I do not understand the thought process behind Switzerland’s costume :/ There were so many other directions they could’ve gone in, and that’s what they chose?? Some of the others are fantastic though!

  2. JJB says:

I like October but as it’s 90 freakin degrees here I’m pretty sure it hasn’t actually happened yet :-/

  3. CLAUDIA (the other other one) says:

Ah, really enjoyed looking at the Mister Global guys while stuck in an video conference!
Altho I have so many questions for the USA, Sweden, and Cuba dudes.

  4. LauraL says:

@ CLAUDIA (the other one) – Checked out the Mister Global contenders while on a project meeting. I have come to the conclusion that Mr. South Africa spends more time on daily grooming than I do. I also have questions for the Cuba dude.

Loved the story of the Vick-tory dogs. One of the rescued girls lived in my area and made special appearances at fund-raising events for “ring” dogs. The resilience of rescued animals is inspiring.

  5. Jenn says:

    Hahahaha….poor Sweden.

  6. Tam says:

I don’t understand why Mr America isn’t just wearing a pair of blue jeans fitted nicely at the hip, and nothing else. They’re probably the most iconic garment of the US.

  7. Vicki says:

Oh,my! Is it wrong that I bookmarked that page so I can think about those costumes a little more? And because the clinic where I work has a huge international population, I can “hear” the accent to go with many of those photos. Delicious.

  8. Egged says:

I love that Sweden is one of the few guys not doing a Blue Steel face. It’s so very Swedish.

  9. Ruth says:

I love October! It’s definitely the best month, where the weather is good almost everywhere (here in San Francisco we are having a beautiful, crisp fall day: sunny and in the 60s). October is the least foggy month in the Bay Area, which is why a lot of the big outdoor events are scheduled for this month: this week is a huge free music festival, next week is fleet week, and a bunch of smaller events.

Someone in the Mr. Global comments suggested the Mr. USA should be wearing a Native American costume, which would have been so wrong (cultural appropriation, anyone?). I’m also a little bothered that the white South African dude is wearing a native African outfit. I like that Haiti went with a minimalist look!

  10. tikaanidog says:

@Ruth, oh, glad I’m not the only one who’s bothered by the south african outfit on a white guy. and yeah, no, USA guy should definitely not be in a native american outfit of any kind. most of the rest of the outfits (cuba – WTH?!?) were just beautiful.

  11. denise says:

Congratulations on being Recognized by O!

  12. Glauke says:

Over at Lithub, they featured a “we had a robot read 3.5 million books to see how women versus men are described and the results are predictably depressing”-study
    https://lithub.com/a-robot-read-3-5-million-books-to-discover-we-describe-women-by-their-appearance-and-men-by-their-virtue-no-one-surprised/

  13. Jesara says:

Commenting pretty late – but I can’t resist. The Mister Global
Link made my smile with all the glorious eye candy it started out with – and then laugh when you get down to those last few contestants
    Thoughts:
Why is Brazil wearing a very strange onesie over what looks like a perfectly nice suit? Also just slapping a flag on something makes it cultural? ( Hold that thought)
Oh Cuba – you sweet summer child, you.
So it’s a custom of the Swiss to run around dressed only in their flag? Maybe that is why we don’t have a full front for him?
    USA: . . .
