  • A Curse So Dark and Lonely

A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer

RECOMMENDED: A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer is $1.99! This one was recommended to Carrie and she really enjoyed it, giving the book an A-:

I enjoyed the way this book both used and subverted Beauty and the Beast tropes. There’s a good blend of angst and humor and worldbuilding.

In a lush, contemporary fantasy retelling of Beauty and the Beast, Brigid Kemmerer gives readers another compulsively readable romance perfect for fans of Marissa Meyer.

Fall in love, break the curse.

It once seemed so easy to Prince Rhen, the heir to Emberfall. Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year over and over, he knew he could be saved if a girl fell for him. But that was before he learned that at the end of each autumn, he would turn into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. That was before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.

Nothing has ever been easy for Harper. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother barely holding their family together while constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, she learned to be tough enough to survive. But when she tries to save someone else on the streets of Washington, DC, she’s instead somehow sucked into Rhen’s cursed world.

Break the curse, save the kingdom.

A prince? A monster? A curse? Harper doesn’t know where she is or what to believe. But as she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what’s at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.

  • The Negotiator

    The Negotiator by Avery Flynn

The Negotiator by Avery Flynn is 99c! Readers loved the ball-busting heroine and the fake relationship element, but some found the romance and its characters to be superficial. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads. Have you read this one?

    Wanted: Personal Buffer
Often snarly, workaholic executive seeks “buffer” from annoying outside distractions AKA people. Free spirits with personal boundary issues, excessive quirks, or general squeamishness need not apply. Salary negotiable. Confidentiality required.

Workaholic billionaire Sawyer Carlyle may have joked he needed a buffer from their marriage-obsessed mom, but he didn’t need a waiting room filled with candidates to further distract him. (Thanks, bro.) But when a sexy job applicant shooes his mom and the socialite in tow out of his office, Sawyer sees the genius of the plan. And the woman. In fact, Miss Clover Lee might just get the fastest promotion in history, from buffer to fake fiancé…

This free-spirit might look like hot sunshine and lickable rainbows, but she negotiates like a pitbull. Before Sawyer knows what hit him, he’s agreed to give up Friday nights for reality tv, his Saturdays for flea markets (why buy junk still baffles him), his Tuesdays and Thursdays for date nights (aka panty-losing opportunities if he plays his cards right). And now she wants lavender bath salts and tulips delivered every Monday?

Yup, she’s just screwing with him. Good thing she’s got this non-negotiatable six-weeks-and-she’s-gone rule or Sawyer may have just met this match..

  • Girl Waits with Gun

Girl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart

RECOMMENDEDGirl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart is $2.99! This is a piece of historical fiction with a group of sisters and Carrie reviewed it! It earned a B+ grade:

Girl Waits With Gun is a historical fiction about the first female deputy sheriff in the USA and her two sisters. It is set just before the outbreak of WWI and just after a major strike by silk-factory workers. It is absolutely delightful, with a heroine who is tall, loud, smart, and deeply protective of her family.

Constance Kopp doesn’t quite fit the mold. She towers over most men, has no interest in marriage or domestic affairs, and has been isolated from the world since a family secret sent her and her sisters into hiding fifteen years ago. One day a belligerent and powerful silk factory owner runs down their buggy, and a dispute over damages turns into a war of bricks, bullets, and threats as he unleashes his gang on their family farm. When the sheriff enlists her help in convicting the men, Constance is forced to confront her past and defend her family — and she does it in a way that few women of 1914 would have dared.

  • Burn for You

Burn for You by J.T. Geissinger

Burn for You by J.T. Geissinger is 99c at Amazon! This is a contemporary romance with a marriage of convenience and Beauty and the Beast influences. Readers seem divided on the hero, but I’m super curious about this one because it has a lot of my catnip.

The marriage is fake. But for a sassy chef and an arrogant billionaire, the sparks are real…

Jackson “The Beast” Boudreaux is rich, gorgeous, and unbelievably rude to the staff at Chef Bianca Hardwick’s New Orleans restaurant. Bianca would sooner douse herself in hot sauce than cook for Jackson again, but when he asks her to cater his fund-raiser, Bianca can’t refuse, knowing the cash will help pay her mother’s medical bills. Then Jackson makes another outrageous request: Marry me. The unconventional offer includes an enormous sum—money Bianca desperately needs, even if it does come with a contract — and a stunning ring.

The heir to a family bourbon dynasty, Jackson knows the rumors swirling around him. The truth is even darker. Still, he needs a wife to secure his inheritance, and free-spirited, sassy Bianca would play the part beautifully. Soon, though, their simple business deal evolves into an emotional intimacy he’s built walls to avoid.

As the passion heats up between them, Bianca and Jackson struggle to define which feelings are real and which are for show. Is falling for your fake fiancé the best happy ending… or a recipe for disaster?

  1. Cristie says:

Jenn Burke’s m/m paranormal mystery which I’ve seen highly recommended on many of my favorite sites is also on sale as part of the kdd’s. It’s only 99 cents so I snatched it right up.

  2. Antipodean Shenanigans says:

Burn for You was pretty good. I did have a small issue with the use of a disabled child as a plot moppet.

I much prefer the (RITA nominated) standalone second in the series, Melt for You.

  3. Darlynne says:

Just saw that Cat Valente’s THE GIRL WHO CIRCUMNAVIGATED FAIRYLAND IN A SHIP OF HER OWN MAKING is one of the Kindle sale books. Oh, to read this book for the first time. Young September wishes for an adventure and the Green Wind shows up, telling her that Fairyland needs her help. Truly unforgettable.

  4. Skye says:

I enjoyed Burn for You except for the part where the white male MC called the woman of color MC a “savage” in his internal narration. NOT COOL. I was going to give Melt for You a try, because I do like the author’s writing style, until I saw this 🙁 https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2801692153

  5. cbackson says:

I loooooove Beauty and the Beast retellings, and thus, deeply enjoyed A Curse So Dark and Lonely although I feel like authors might wanna stay away from that particular fairytale for a while simply because it’s so popular. It is an extremely good one, although I agree with the reviewer who said that the romantic and emotional tension with captain of the guard Grey is more appealing than with the hero (and he’s definitely the hero – it’s not a triangle).

  6. Antipodean Shenanigans says:

@Skye I’m fat and I felt like the heroine in Melt for You had a reasonable arc by the end of the book. However, I noted in my review at the time “major warning if diet talk, a negative relationship with food, or a heroine with low self esteem bothers you.”

  7. Deianira says:

“The Negotiator” is the first (& best) of the books in its series. I’ve found I either really enjoy Avery Flynn’s books, or give up on them about halfway through. (Explanatory note: the older I get – I’m in my 50s – the less likely I am to finish an otherwise OK book if it’s not doing it for me.). The heroine in this one reminds me of my brother, with her fearless lust for adventure & make-it-happen attitude, which I think is what made it work for me.

  8. Emily B says:

I actually really enjoyed Melt for You, but couldn’t get into Burn for You. I read the most recent book in that series (can’t remember the name) and didn’t like it at all. It was disappointing because I thought the series had a strong start. I really enjoyed Avery Flynn’s Hartigans series so I’m excited to try out another one of her books.

  9. Jill Marie says:

I really liked listening to “The Negotiator.” The narration makes or breaks an audiobook, and this was spot-on.

  10. Crysta says:

OMG Fairyland?! (See previous comment) – Go spend your hard-earned 99c on this book right now! It’s truly one of my favorites and so delightful and original. Agreed wholeheartedly with @Darlynne – I would pay decent money to read this book for the first time again.
