Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses. It’s Wednesday! My allergies are here in full force, making their presence known. I also think I may have food poisoning, so that’s fun. I’ll be in New York for Book Expo, learning about all the cool new books coming out. I’m sure I’ll give you all the deetz when I get back.

Author Jennifer Weiner is at Publishers Weekly talking about the phrase, “I wrote a thing.” I’m guilty of this and have been working hard to break this habit:

I suspect that it’s gendered, and I wrote a thing is born of women being told, overtly and implicitly, that our stories do not matter—not the stories we write, which are still not reviewed as frequently or taken as seriously as men’s books, and not the stories we tell, which are still too often met with skepticism and shrugs.

Even as a feminist, a mother trying to raise self-confident girls, and an author who’s spent years speaking out about these issues; even after publishing 12 novels and umpteen essays; even after noticing, and cringing, whenever I see I wrote a thing, I find it hard not to use the phrase myself. Judging from the number of women I see using it—smart women, accomplished women, award-winning women, who announce their awards by tweeting I won a thing—I’m not alone.

I hope you can hear my emphatically nodding.

Sarah is in The Washington Post, recommending some great series to read during the summer! The series vary in length, depending on your level of reading commitment.

Did you know that Netflix has a prequel in the works for The Dark Crystal? I’m incredibly excited. Will you be watching?

My local wine bar, Rebel Rebel, participated in #RoseForResistance, where 100% of rosé sales went to the YellowHammer fund. I especially loved this interview with Rebel Rebel owner, Lauren Friel:

This week taught me that our industry has a real shot at making activism easier, because we can take the edge off. It can be hard for folks to get involved with activism. It can be overwhelming, both in knowing where to start and confronting the inequalities within our communities that necessitate activism to begin with. It’s difficult to think about how our neighbors are suffering, and how our privilege might contribute to or enable that suffering. So often, that sense of helplessness becomes inaction. We do nothing, because there’s too much to do.

I believe that bars and restaurants can be the spoonful of sugar on top of all that difficult medicine. We’re social spaces devoted to pleasure. We’re also an industry that’s just beginning to acknowledge all of the work we still have left to do.

Though I believe the fundraiser is over, if you’re in the Greater Boston area, I highly recommend Rebel Rebel.

If you have a spare seven minutes, watch this series of Japanese candy ads. Seven minutes for a satisfying story arc (and those GoT dudes had six episodes, not that I’m bitter):

..

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

@Amanda I saw the words allergies and food poisoning symptoms and had to chime in… have you ever been tested for food allergies?
Those can develop at any age, mine did after 30. Fun fun.

  2. Ren Benton says:

    @Escapeologist: Me and milk. 😛

I discovered the miracle of cashew milk ice cream just this weekend, so now I’m waiting for a nut allergy to strike and ruin that, too.

(That “bleh” emoticon translated a little more cheerful about my physical distress than intended…)

I love long man! OTP and true love abounds

  5. Amanda says:

@Escapeologist: They are unrelated! I always have spring/fall allergies since moving to the Northeast. The food poisoning was from me being an idiot and eating a hot dog in my fridge that I probably shouldn’t have.

Excited to see your posts from BookExpo – I’ll be at BookCon on Sunday and am still keeping fingers crossed that I get a ticket to the Romance Candy Crushes signing event.

If you’ll be around on Saturday evening, Books Are Magic (bookstore in Brooklyn) is hosting a Romance is Magic event with a bunch of different authors! I’m planning to go to that to kick off my bookish weekend.

  7. Escapeologist says:

@Ren Benton coconut milk ice cream is yummy too 🙂

@DiscoDollyDeb that article is spot on. And now I have “That Thing You Do” stuck in my head (the song from the movie about a Beatles-like boy band).

    “Will you be watching?”
No, I’ll be over here still wondering why everyone loves the creepy puppet thing. Maybe it’s because I missed the original film? I don’t know if I’m just getting really used to photo-real CG and I just don’t understand the allure of puppets and their very limited facial movements, or what…
I did love them on Farscape, tho, so don’t hate me.

I heard about the Dark Crystal prequel and I hope they do it justice.
