A Circus, Zombies, & More

  • One and Only

One and Only by Jenny Holiday

One and Only by Jenny Holiday is $2.99! This is the first book in the Bridesmaids Behaving Badly series. I found the book to be pretty cute and the heroine is an adorable nerd. However, the heroine is described as being a little unhappy with her weight and trying to lose some before her friend’s wedding. Be warned if you’re sensitive to food issues, dieting, etc.

In this laugh-out-loud romantic comedy, USA Today bestselling author Jenny Holiday proves that when opposites attract, sparks fly.

    Miss Responsibility meets Mr. Reckless

With her bridezilla friend on a DIY project rampage, bridesmaid Jane Denning will do anything to escape–even if it means babysitting the groom’s troublemaker brother before the wedding. It should be a piece of cake, except the “cake” is a sarcastic former soldier who is 100% wicked hotness and absolutely off-limits.

Cameron MacKinnon is ready to let loose after returning from his deployment. But first he’ll have to sweet talk the ultra-responsible Jane into taking a walk on the wild side. Turns out, riling her up is the best time he’s had in years. But what happens when the fun and games start to turn into something real?

  • The Night Circus

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern is $2.99! This fantasy novel was everywhere when it came out and does seem to have romantic elements. While the setting captured readers’ attentions, some wished it had more emotional depth. A lot of readers are anticipating Morgenstern’s upcoming book, The Starless Sea.

Two starcrossed magicians engage in a deadly game of cunning in The Night Circus, the spellbinding bestseller that has captured the world’s imagination.

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway: a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them both, this is a game in which only one can be left standing. Despite the high stakes, Celia and Marco soon tumble headfirst into love, setting off a domino effect of dangerous consequences, and leaving the lives of everyone, from the performers to the patrons, hanging in the balance.

  • More Than Words

More Than Words by Mia Sheridan

More Than Words by Mia Sheridan is $1.99! This is a friends to lovers romance between childhood friends who haven’t seen each other in years. I read this one and liked it, but it’s high on drama and angst. There’s also some Joan of Arc nerdery. Content warning for abuse in the hero’s backstory.

No one lays open the heart and soul quite like New York Timesbestselling author Mia Sheridan.

The moment she met Callen Hayes, eleven-year-old Jessica Creswell knew he was a broken prince. Her prince. They became each other’s refuge, a safe and magical place far from their troubled lives. Until the day Callen kissed herJessica’s first real, dreamy kissand then disappeared from her life without a word.

Years later, everyone knows who Callen Hayes is. Famous composer. Infamous bad boy. What no one knows is that Callen’s music is now locked deep inside, trapped behind his own inner demons. It’s only when he withdraws to France to drink his way through the darkness that Callen stumbles into the one person who makes the music return. Jessica. His Jessie. And she still tastes of fresh, sweet innocence . . . even as she sets his blood on fire.

But they don’t belong in each other’s worlds anymore. There are too many mistakes. Too many secrets. Too many lies. All they have is that instinctive longing, that needand something that looks dangerously like love.

  • My Life as a White Trash Zombie

My Life as a White Trash Zombie by Diana Rowland

My Life as a White Trash Zombie by Diana Rowland is $2.99! This was the very first book I added to my Goodreads account in 2011. I still haven’t read it. Many readers say they were surprised with how much they enjoyed this one, but expressed some issues with the pacing.

    Angel Crawford is a loser.

Living with her alcoholic deadbeat dad in the swamps of southern Louisiana, she’s a high school dropout with a pill habit and a criminal record who’s been fired from more crap jobs than she can count. Now on probation for a felony, it seems that Angel will never pull herself out of the downward spiral her life has taken.

That is, until the day she wakes up in the ER after overdosing on painkillers. Angel remembers being in a horrible car crash, but she doesn’t have a mark on her. To add to the weirdness, she receives an anonymous letter telling her there’s a job waiting for her at the parish morgue—and that it’s an offer she doesn’t dare refuse.

Before she knows it she’s dealing with a huge crush on a certain hunky deputy and a brand new addiction: an overpowering craving for brains. Plus, her morgue is filling up with the victims of a serial killer who decapitates his prey—just when she’s hungriest!

Angel’s going to have to grow up fast if she wants to keep this job and stay in one piece. Because if she doesn’t, she’s dead meat.

    Literally.

ASH by Malinda Lo is $2.99 at all stores checked. Lesbian Cinderella retelling.

  2. Emily B says:

I loved Jenny Holiday’s Bridesmaids series so much. The friendships between the women were so well done and sweet.

I did not like More Than Words – I thought the hero was such a dick and really didn’t do enough to redeem himself. It was disappointing because I really enjoyed Most of All You by Mia Sheridan.

  3. Cammy6 says:

White trash zombie is a great book. It can be a bit slow, but worth your time. There are around 6 books in the series now. Angel is a great character. The narrator of the audiobook is also fantastic.

  4. Kris Bock says:

A circus, and zombies, but no circus zombies. Alas.

  5. PamG says:

Read The Night Circus back in the day. It was beautifully written with a complex plot and a love story, but definitely not a romance. I enjoyed it despite the sometimes pretentious writing style, but it was not something I’d read again, though I sometimes enjoy the mysterious, mystical circus/carnival trope. Frankly, I’d prefer to skip the romantic elements and reread Bradbury’s Something Wicked this Way Comes.
