  • Bellewether

    Bellewether by Susanna Kearsley

Bellewether by Susanna Kearsley is $2.99! We did a Cover Reveal for this one, since it was such an interesting departure from Kearsley’s usual covers. Some readers felt this one was slow to start, while others loved Kearlsey’s beautiful writing. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads

“The house, when I first saw it, seemed intent on guarding what it knew; but we all learned, by the end of it, that secrets aren’t such easy things to keep.”

It’s late summer, war is raging, and families are torn apart by divided loyalties and deadly secrets. In this complex and dangerous time, a young French Canadian lieutenant is captured and billeted with a Long Island family, an unwilling and unwelcome guest. As he begins to pitch in with the never-ending household tasks and farm chores, Jean-Philippe de Sabran finds himself drawn to the daughter of the house. Slowly, Lydia Wilde comes to lean on Jean-Philippe, true soldier and gentleman, until their lives become inextricably intertwined. Legend has it that the forbidden love between Jean-Philippe and Lydia ended tragically, but centuries later, the clues they left behind slowly unveil the true story.

Part history, part romance, and all kinds of magic, Susanna Kearsley’s latest masterpiece will draw you in and never let you go, even long after you’ve closed the last page.

  • Taming Her Forbidden Earl

Taming Her Forbidden Earl by Catherine Hemmerling

Taming Her Forbidden Earl by Catherine Hemmerling is 99c! This is the first book in the Lady Lancaster Garden Society series, with the other books also on sale. Some readers felt the dialogue was anachronistic to the time period, while others loved the added mystery element to the romance.

Everyone knows William Bredon, the earl of Pembroke, has a reputation as a captivating rogue, determined to never marry until his duty to produce an heir requires it. So when he invites Lady Hannah Rochester to dance, Hannah vows to keep her distance. But the undeniably gorgeous William, with his dark humor and seductive gaze, draws her in nonetheless.

Of course, Lady Hannah is not completely what she seems, either. A member of the dowager Lady Lancaster’s Garden Society, she secretly spends her days solving mysteries and uncovering intrigues, and when she brings William into the fold, a sinister plot develops that brings the two closer together. William’s protective nature ensures he remains by Hannah’s side, but he will not surrender his anti-marriage stance.

Can intrigue, passion, and maybe even a little bit of scandal reform the most notorious of rakes?

  • Love’s Revenge

    Love’s Revenge by Joan Avery

Love’s Revenge by Joan Avery is 99c! This is an American historical romance with an off-limits/forbidden romance between the hero and the sister of his late wife. (Unless I read the description wrong.) Readers were really taken with the hero and his emotional arc. However, others said the beginning of the book takes some powering through.

    St. Louis, Missouri, 1879

Heiress Kate Barker thought she’d met the man of her dreams the night the mysterious English viscount swept her off her feet at the masquerade. Until his real identity is revealed—the cold, calculating scoundrel is really there to rip her world apart.

The only things that have kept widower Stephen Worth alive for the past two years are the promise of revenge against the man who framed him for murder and the love for Andy, his son, who was taken by the beautiful but vexing sister of his dead wife. He didn’t know what to expect when he met Kate, but it wasn’t undeniable desire.

Torn by attraction, driven by hatred, tempered by their love for a child, Stephen and Kate fight their growing feelings across the country to the wilds of Colorado. If he cannot convince Kate to trust him before she learns the truth about his past, he could lose Andy—but his demons are all the ammunition she needs to keep the boy for good.

  • Longbourn

    Longbourn by Jo Baker

Longbourn by Jo Baker is $1.99! This book divided some of the Bitches. Carrie gave it gave it an A, while Sarah gave it a D. Which camp are you in? Did you love it or hate it?

A brilliantly imagined, irresistible below-stairs answer to Pride and Prejudice: a story of the romance, intrigue and drama among the servants of the Bennet household, a triumphant tale of defying society’s expectations, and an illuminating glimpse of working-class lives in Regency England.

The servants at Longbourn estate–only glancingly mentioned in Jane Austen’s classic–take centre stage in Jo Baker’s lively, cunning new novel. Here are the Bennets as we have never known them: seen through the eyes of those scrubbing the floors, cooking the meals, emptying the chamber pots. Our heroine is Sarah, an orphaned housemaid beginning to chafe against the boundaries of her class. When the militia marches into town, a new footman arrives under mysterious circumstances, and Sarah finds herself the object of the attentions of an ambitious young former slave working at neighboring Netherfield Hall, the carefully choreographed world downstairs at Longbourn threatens to be completely, perhaps irrevocably, up-ended. From the stern but soft-hearted housekeeper to the starry-eyed kitchen maid, these new characters come vividly to life in this already beloved world. Jo Baker shows us what Jane Austen wouldn’t in a captivating, wonderfully evocative, moving work of fiction.

  1. Ren Benton says:

    N. K. Jemisin’s short-story collection HOW LONG ‘TIL BLACK FUTURE MONTH is $4.99 everywhere until February 18.

Tatyana Nesteruk’s THE EUROPEAN CAKE COOKBOOK is $2.99 at Amazon for the month and price matched at least at B&N and Kobo. Lots of mousse and fruit and flavor combinations not frequently found in the U.S. I think only two recipes lack photos.

  2. Lostshadows says:

I just finished Bellewether. I enjoyed it, but honestly, nothing really happens in it. Very low stakes romance, but I did find it satisfying.

  3. No, the Other Anne says:

@Lostshadows Same here. Excellent comfort read, and I have a particular soft spot for Susanna Kearsley’s multiple-timeline plots, and especially for the time(s) and place she’s writing about in Bellewether.

I was really touched by how, in this most recent of her novels, she has so clearly listened to those of us who are constantly asking for fiction that’s not just about white people, but more representative of the world we all live in. It’s not own-voices, and at some points the seams show a little bit, but she’s made a very sincere effort and I think done a great job of showing how a white author can learn to be respectfully inclusive.

  4. Dorothea says:

Wow, the cover from “Love’s Revenge” is so random, and so very not St. Louis, Missouri in 1879.
