Historical Romances and a YA Fantasy

  • Three Weeks with a Princess

Three Weeks with a Princess by Vanessa Kelly

Three Weeks with a Princess by Vanessa Kelly is 99c! This historical romance is pretty dang cute and is a friends to lovers romances. I loved how the heroine came from a line of scandalous women. I will admit it was a bit slow to start though. However, it’s a pretty charming book. This is also part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals, which includes other historical romances. Be sure to take a look!

In Vanessa Kelly’s captivating series, three young women are descended from royalty—in the most improper way. But that doesn’t stop them from pursuing lives rich in adventure. . .

Lia Kincaid, illegitimate daughter of the Duke of York, comes from a long line of notorious women. Raised by her grandmother, formerly mistress to the late Marquess of Lendale, she has little hope of a respectable marriage. But the new marquess, her childhood friend, Jack Easton, would make a very desirable protector . . . if he weren’t too honorable to take her to bed.

It’s bad enough being saddled with a title he never desired. Now Jack must resist the beautiful woman he desires far too much. Duty calls, and he is duty-bound to choose a wealthy bride. But then Lia makes another outrageous suggestion: asking Jack to devise some tests to find her the perfect paramour. Tests that involve flirting, kissing, and other pleasurable pursuits. Tests that, in a matter of weeks, could transform friendship into the ton’s greatest scandal, igniting a passion even duty can’t deny. . .

The Infamous Heir by Elizabeth Michels is $2.51 at Amazon and $2.99 elsewhere! This is book one in the Spare Heirs series. It features a prize-fighting hero who suddenly takes over his brother’s title of nobility. Readers wanted more chemistry between the hero and heroine, but many really loved the hero. • The Reluctant Highlander

The Reluctant Highlander by Amanda Scott

The Reluctant Highlander by Amanda Scott is $1.99 at Amazon! This is the first book in the Highland Nights series and features an opposites attract romance. However, reviews say this book leans more toward the historical part and less on the romance part.

An uncertain bride looks for love with a man as wild and mysterious as his Highland home in this new Scottish romance from a USA Today–bestselling author.

Ordinarily, Lady Fiona Ormiston wouldn’t think of forming an alliance with an ungroomed, barbaric Highlander, despite the protection he offers. But now, by request of the king, Sir Adham MacFinlagh, a brazen stranger and outsider unlike anyone she has met before, is to be her husband. Torn from solitude and the comfort of her family to make a home with the rugged knight, Fiona surrenders to Adham’s powerfully passionate—and shockingly tender—touch, only to discover her new husband’s family ties may lie with an enemy of the king.

A sense of duty may have brought Adham to the marriage bed, but it’s his powerful feelings for his beautiful, willful wife that will be his undoing. Ultimately, the bold knight will have to decide: Does his allegiance lie with his blood ties to the man who hopes to bring down the king or with the bride who has stolen his heart?

  • Throne of Glass

Throne of Glass by Sarah Maas

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas is $2.99 at Amazon and Barnes & Noble! his is the first book in the very popular YA fantasy series, Throne of Glass.  Readers seem to be split on the heroine – some found her pretty kickass, while others thought she was pretty full of herself. Anyone who has read this, please share your thoughts in the comments!

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king’s council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.

Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her… but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead… quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

  1. Sophia says:

I’d say that both statements about Celaena are right. She’s quite arrogant, but she’s also right about how good she is. There’s also some excellent examples of female rage later in the series. There were some people who called her a Mary Sue type – there’s probably some truth to it, but it’s done well, and never bothered me.

  2. Kelsey Cooper says:

I agree with Sophia. Celaena arrogant and some of it is deserved but she is also a character who grows through out the series and realizes mistakes have been made. I’m currently reading the last book in the series and I’m hoping that female rage can hold out.

  3. Nagarajas says:

Celaena is very arrogant, and deservedly so. The series explores pretty well how much of this is a front, and how much of it is an honest assessment of her skills, and how much is pure bullshit.

What really makes the first book exceptional is how the love triangle is handled. Calaena makes her choice, the boys angst but behave reasonably well, and it moves the plot forward in vital ways. I hate love triangles (they’re more a failure of teamwork then a plot) but I really loved this one.

  4. MsCellanie says:

“Three weeks…” sounds remarkably like “Gigi,” but less French.

  5. Tam says:

Celaena struck me as the teenage Mary Sue to end all Mary Sues, but I have to confess, I DNF the series.

  6. thorn says:

I have spent “Throne of Glass” wishing I could throttle the heroine.

  7. Cassie says:

In Throne of Glass, Celaena is very obviously Star Wars fan fiction based on the now-Legends character Mara Jade (Mara even goes by the name Celina at one point). I’d much rather read the real thing.

And then Maas leaves Star Wars fanfiction behind and the series goes full Tam Lin instead. That’s when I left, when extra-special Celaena is revealed to be superduper extra-special. That, and Maas also has an unfortunate tendency to stuff supporting female characters in refrigerators.
