  • The Princess Diarist

The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher

The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher is $1.99 at Amazon and Barnes & Noble! I had mixed feelings on this one. I loved listening to it on audio, though I did tear up at times since I listed to it following Carrie’s death. However, the book exclusively deals with Carrie’s experiences on the set of Star Wars and I wanted more of a broader scope.

The Princess Diarist is Carrie Fisher’s intimate, hilarious and revealing recollection of what happened behind the scenes on one of the most famous film sets of all time, the first Star Warsmovie.

When Carrie Fisher recently discovered the journals she kept during the filming of the first Star Wars movie, she was astonished to see what they had preserved—plaintive love poems, unbridled musings with youthful naiveté, and a vulnerability that she barely recognized. Today, her fame as an author, actress, and pop-culture icon is indisputable, but in 1977, Carrie Fisher was just a (sort-of) regular teenager.

With these excerpts from her handwritten notebooks, The Princess Diarist is Fisher’s intimate and revealing recollection of what happened on one of the most famous film sets of all time—and what developed behind the scenes. And today, as she reprises her most iconic role for the latest Star Wars trilogy, Fisher also ponders the joys and insanity of celebrity, and the absurdity of a life spawned by Hollywood royalty, only to be surpassed by her own outer-space royalty. Laugh-out-loud hilarious and endlessly quotable, The Princess Diarist brims with the candor and introspection of a diary while offering shrewd insight into the type of stardom that few will ever experience.

  • The Moon in the Palace

The Moon in the Palace by Weina Dai Randel

The Moon in the Palace by Weina Dai Randel is $2.99! Last year, this book won a RITA for in the Mainstream Fiction with a Central Romance category. Readers loved the setting and political intrigue, though some described some pacing issues. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

There is no easy path for a woman aspiring to power

A concubine at the palace learns quickly that there are many ways to capture the Emperor’s attention. Many paint their faces white and style their hair attractively, hoping to lure in the One Above All with their beauty. Some present him with fantastic gifts, such as jade pendants and scrolls of calligraphy, while others rely on their knowledge of seduction to draw his interest. But young Mei knows nothing of these womanly arts, yet she will give the Emperor a gift he can never forget.

Mei’s intelligence and curiosity, the same traits that make her an outcast among the other concubines, impress the Emperor. But just as she is in a position to seduce the most powerful man in China, divided loyalties split the palace in two, culminating in a perilous battle that Mei can only hope to survive.

In the breakthrough first volume in the Empress of Bright Moon duology, Weina Dai Randel paints a vibrant portrait of ancient China—where love, ambition, and loyalty can spell life of death—and the woman who came to rule it all.

  • Beginner’s Luck

    Beginner’s Luck by Kate Clayborn

Beginner’s Luck by Kate Clayborn is 99c! Sarah gave this book a C- because she was hoping for some more depth in the book. However, I remember seeing the Bitchery recommend it in comments. This might be a Your Mileage May Vary situation. It also has a scientist heroine!

When three friends impulsively buy a lottery ticket, they never suspect the many ways their lives will change—or that for each of them, love will be the biggest win of all.

Kit Averin is anything but a gambler. A scientist with a quiet, steady job at a university, Kit’s focus has always been maintaining the acceptable status quo. A sudden windfall doesn’t change that, with one exception: the fixer-upper she plans to buy, her first and only real home. It’s more than enough to keep her busy, until an unsettlingly handsome, charming, and determined corporate recruiter shows up in her lab—and manages to work his way into her heart . . .

Ben Tucker is surprised to find that the scientist he wants for Beaumont Materials is a young woman—and a beautiful, sharp-witted one at that. Talking her into a big-money position with his firm is harder than he expects, but he’s willing to put in the time, especially when sticking around for the summer gives him a chance to reconnect with his dad. But the longer he stays, the more questions he has about his own future—and who might be in it.

What begins as a chilly rebuff soon heats up into an attraction neither Kit nor Ben can deny—and finding themselves lucky in love might just be priceless . . .

  • Crystal Gardens

    Crystal Gardens by Amanda Quick

Crystal Gardens by Amanda Quick is $1.99! This is the first book in the Ladies of Lantern Street series and it’s a historical romance with some elements of the paranormal. Readers say that Quick fans won’t exactly find anything new in this one. However, others loved how Quick created a sense of eeriness in this one. Have you read it?

Evangeline Ames has rented a country cottage far from the London streets where she was recently attacked. Fascinated by the paranormal energy of nearby Crystal Gardens, she finds pleasure in sneaking past the wall to explore the grounds. And when her life is threatened again, she instinctively goes to the gardens for safety.

Lucas Sebastian has never been one to ignore a lady in danger, even if she is trespassing on his property. Quickly disposing of her would-be assassin, he insists they keep the matter private. There are rumors enough already, about treasure buried under his garden, and occult botanical experiments performed by his uncle—who died of mysterious causes. With Evangeline’s skill for detection, and Lucas’s sense of the criminal mind, they soon discover that they have a common enemy. And as the energy emanating from Crystal Gardens intensifies, they realize that to survive they must unearth what has been buried for too long.

CS Harris’ When Falcons Fall is $1.99 on Kindle. It’s been running at 11.99.

  2. CelineB says:

I liked a lot of things about Beginner’s Luck. Clayborn created some great characters, but I felt like the pacing was uneven and the final conflict was drawn out too long. Basically I liked the book, but I felt that the potential was there in the story for me to love it if it had just been tweaked a little. I think those are pretty common problems with first books and I’m looking forward to her future installments in the series.
