Ancillary Justice

Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie is $2.99! I know Carrie really loves this book (and the entire series, I believe). It’s also a Hugo Award winner! Readers really loved the scifi world building, though some admitted wanting more action in the first book of the Imperial Radch series. This book is a Kindle Daily Deal of scifi and thrillers. Other books included in the deal are The Fifth Season, New York 2140, and more!

Someone to Hold by Mary Balogh is $1.99! This is the second book in the Westcott series, which I know many of you love. Some found the book rather repetitive in some parts, though many praise Balogh’s romances for their depth and tenderness. What did you think of this one?
Humphrey Wescott, Earl of Riverdale, has died, leaving behind a fortune and a scandalous secret that will forever alter the lives of his family—sending one daughter on a journey of self-discovery…
With her parents’ marriage declared bigamous, Camille Westcott is now illegitimate and without a title. Looking to eschew the trappings of her old life, she leaves London to teach at the Bath orphanage where her newly discovered half-sister lived. But even as she settles in, she must sit for a portrait commissioned by her grandmother and endure an artist who riles her every nerve.
An art teacher at the orphanage that was once his home, Joel Cunningham has been hired to paint the portrait of the haughty new teacher. But as Camille poses for Joel, their mutual contempt soon turns to desire. And it is only the bond between them that will allow them to weather the rough storm that lies ahead…

After Midnight by Santino Hassell is 99c at Amazon! This is a standalone gay romance in a dystopian setting, though I believe it has some spin-off elements to Hassell’s In the Company of Shadows series. Readers loved the sexual tension between the main characters, but warn the ending isn’t so much an HEA. According to Amazon, the price jumps up to $1.99 in less than a day.
Gordon Frost is a survivor. He survived a war that ravaged the nation, and he made it through the orphanages and crime-ridden slums that followed. With few prospects for the future, Gordon carved out a niche for himself in the expanding drug trade of Lexington, PA. It’s not pretty, but it’s his, and it beats what he was doing before. But a classic case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time results in a brush with death, going by the name of Adam. Afterward, the life that seemed good enough before, isn’t quite the same.
Adam Blake is an assassin on the brink of being terminated by the very organization that controls him. He completed his mission, but not without being seen. With his secrets in danger of being exposed by Gordon, Adam knows he should kill the smart-mouthed redhead, but finds himself intrigued by the troublesome civilian instead.
When Gordon’s knack for finding trouble combines with the dangerous consequences of Adam’s indecision, their worlds intertwine in an explosive way.

Seduced at Sunset by Julianne MacLean is 99c at Amazon! This is the sixth book in the Pembroke Palace series, but it can be read as a standalone. Both the hero and heroine have secret lives, which readers liked. However, some warn that while it can be read on its own, it’s the last book in the series and does check in with couples from previous books.
USA Today bestselling author Julianne MacLean brings the popular Pembroke Palace Series to a passionate, satisfying conclusion…

I loved Ancillary Justice! I can’t wait to read the other two books in the series.
I just read Someone To Love, the first book in the Westcott series, after reading Someone To Hold before realizing it was part of a series. I definitely recommend reading them in order, as the whole inheritance/legitimacy situation is pretty complicated, and there is a large cast of supporting characters. I enjoyed both books; like many of Balogh’s romances the characters grow and change in deep and emotional ways. However, also like many of Balogh’s romances, the sex scenes are pretty blah (she always has the men “come into” or “mount” the women which…does not do it for me. Also light on the women’s pleasure).
Other books included in the deal are The Fifth Season…
An unseen presence seizes your hand and spends that $2 for you.
Unless you’ll be emotionally scarred by violence toward children, of which there are several instances intended to punch even callous readers in the kidneys. In which case, the unseen presence doesn’t want to real-world traumatize you.
The following books are all $0.99 at Amazon:
* A SNIPER’S DEVOTION by Christa Tomlinson (M/M) – A member of the SWAT team and his childhood friend reunite.
* UNDONE BY THE EX-CON by Talia Hibbert (M/F) – A prima ballerina and an Ex-Con fall in love. The primary ballerina is black and British.
* SMALL CHANGE by Roan Parrish (M/Bi!F) – A tattoo artist and a coffee shop owner have a quirky romance.
* THE OPPOSITE OF YOU by Rachel Higginson (M/F) – An enemies to lovers romance about a food truck owner vs. a Michelin-rated chef.
I also loved Ancillary Justice! The audiobook was well done too.
Megan Spooner’s Hunted is $1.99. It’s a beauty and the beast retelling with a very, very angry beauty. I enjoyed it a lot, but then again, I’m a sucker for the beauty and the beast trope. Elyse gave it an A grade in her review here.
THANK YOU SO MUCH, ARIADNA! I loved the somewhere books by Roan Parrish but just couldn’t allow myself to buy a book that had such a high pricetag (I usually limit it to $4 apiece with a few exceptions) so I’ve been waiting for Small Change since it came out.
Happy Valentine’s Day ebook gift from Rose Lerner, True Pretenses, available through http://www.roselerner.com. This is the second book of her Lively St. Lemeston series and it is lovely.
@KatieLynn You’re welcome! 🙂
One of my favorite m/m authors (Cardeno C) / books has The Half of Us on for 0.99 for Valentines. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016NEHJZK/
I have read ALL these books! I really liked Ancillary Justice (this won its Hugo at the height of the “Sad Puppy” fiasco) but be aware it may take a bit getting used to the gender pronoun switch ups. Once it clicks you have a great story.
The Mary Balogh book was one of that series I did NOT care for. I thought it a bit creepy how she immersed herself into the life of the woman who took her place in society. I liked the other books in the series just not this one.
The Santino Hassell (novella) is a side story based on the most excellent but super loooong books of “In the Company of Shadows” ( about 900+ pages each). It’s a M/M series that is incredible. It was free on the author’s website for years. Then he became pretty popular so I doubt it’s still there. This is short and gritty.
@JudyW ICoS is still available for free over here: http://aisylum.com/project/icos/
(Scroll down for different ebook formats).
I cannot recommend Ancillary Justice and The Fifth Season enough. They are both some of the best books I’ve read in months.
(I’m actually only midway through the second book in the Broken Earth trilogy, and I’m constantly texting friends to try to convince them to read it, because I have to share the awesome).
