The Highland Commander
Update: Deal no longer available.
The Highland Commander by Amy Jarecki is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price matched. The book also came out this summer, so it’s a relatively new release. The hero is a virgin (CATNIP!), though several readers though there was too much of a focus on the hero’s virginity.
She cannot resist the man behind the mask…
As the illegitimate daughter of a Scottish earl, Lady Magdalen Keith is not one to partake in lavish balls or other frivolities. Yet at her father’s urging, she agrees to dance with the battle-weary officers at this year’s holiday masquerade. It’s practically her civic duty! But when one such officer—whose dashing good looks cannot be disguised by a mere mask—sweeps her off her feet and into his arms, the innocent lass can’t help herself. Her lips are his for the taking.
But will he betray his country for a kiss?
Navy lieutenant Aiden Murray has spent too many months at sea to be immune to the charms of this lovely beauty. Even after he returns to his ship, she lives in his dreams. But when he discovers Maddie’s true identity—and learns that her father is accused of treason—will the brawny Scot risk his life to follow his heart?

The Playboy Next Door
The Playboy Next Door by Christina Tetreault is 99c at Amazon and $2.99 elsewhere! This is a contemporary romance set on the North Shore of Massachusetts and is the third book in a series. You can grab all five books for less than $10 and the first book is FREE! Readers recommend this for fans of cute contemporaries, but some say they wanted more conflict between the hero and heroine.
After a blind date stands her up, Catrina Striker stops in O’Leary’s Pub for a sandwich, nothing else. Then Tony Bates, North Salem’s resident playboy, sits down next to her and destiny takes over. Cat knows all about Tony’s reputation, but that doesn’t stop her from doing something she’s never done before: invite him back to her apartment.
Tony Bates has always looked at Catrina as nothing but his buddy’s little sister, until a chance encounter one summer night changes all that.
Since the sudden death of his college sweetheart, Tony has kept all his relationships casual and fun. Everyone knows that, which is why Cat and Tony agree to keep their involvement a secret rather than risk Tony’s friendship with her brother. However, what starts out as a secret fling soon becomes much more, and Tony must decide if he’s ready to risk his heart again or lose the woman who completes him.

Highland Fling
Update: Deal no longer available.
Highland Fling by Amanda Scott is 99c! This is the first book in the Highland series and was originally publishing in the mid-nineties. Readers warn that it has a very slow start, though others felt there was a good blend of humor and chemistry. Have you read this one?
The Scottish Highlands in 1750 endure grievous hardships under the rule of an English king. Beautiful, golden-haired Maggie Macdrumin is determined to help liberate her fellow Scotsmen, but upon arriving in London, she’s arrested and brought to court, falsely accused of stealing a man’s purse. In a bid to save herself, she impulsively lays claim to a family connection with well-known Edward Carsley, the powerful Earl of Rothwell–and her family’s worst enemy.
The handsome earl is adamantly opposed to the cause of the Jacobites, and when Maggie is turned over to him, he sternly forbids her to continue her journey. Maggie, passionately dedicated to her cause, constantly crosses swords with the powerful earl. How the two will remain faithful to their kinsmen and still find a way to resolve the growing desire between them is anyone’s guess.

Just One Night
Just One Night by Kyra Davis is $1.99! This an erotic contemporary romance with no cliffhanger. I will warn that there is cheating involved in the book, which I know is a big off for some readers. However, if you’re willing to give it a chance, one review mentions that not all is what it seems. If you want to read the review I’m talking about and don’t mind spoilers, you can read it here.
In this New York Times bestselling erotic trilogy, a buttoned-up businesswoman takes her friend’s advice and has a fling with a stranger on a trip to Vegas—only to find herself under his mysterious, sexy power both in the boardroom and the bedroom.
Kasie Fitzgerald knows who she’s supposed to be. She’s a rising-star-workaholic at a global consulting firm. She’s the fiancée of a well-connected man who’s won the approval of her parents. People know that she’s reliable, serious, proper, cautious, pragmatic, and yes, a little predictable. She’s who Dave and her family want her to be.
But as her thirtieth birthday looms, buried feelings begin to resurrect. Her friend takes her to Vegas for one last wild and crazy night. In a dress much shorter and sexier than anything she has ever dared to wear before, she hits the blackjack tables. And meets him. Under the tailored clothes it’s clear that this is a man who is intense, powerful, and maybe even a little dangerous. With a touch of trepidation she accepts his invitation to get a drink, and before long, she’s in his hotel room.
She never gets his full name. Perhaps his anonymity is one of the reasons she’s able to give herself over to him and to the moment so completely. Perhaps it’s why she’s just had the most exquisite and passionate sex of her life. Shaken by her own behavior, Kasie tries to chalk it up to one crazy night. But when the mysterious gentleman she’s just had a fling with shows up in her office—as the CEO of a firm her company does a billion dollars of business with a year, demanding that she handle his account, and so much more—things will never be the same again. And there’s no telling where this will go…

Lord John & the Private Matter by Diana Gabaldon is on sale for 1.99 on amazon. I do not know if it is price matched. This is a book in a related series of historical mysteries, but other than Lord John (and I think his brother) other characters from Outlander don’t appear. The Lord John books are shorter and definitely mysteries, not romance. These books don’t usually go on sale, so this is a good price.
I been meaning to ask a question on the Romance Genre; What do most (if not all) Romance Heroes have in common? what are the similar characteristics of the Romance Hero? be they from Mills-and-Boons or Harlequin, or other. What pattern do these Heroes share in Romance Novels?
Asking for something personal, as I’m writing my first Romance novel (my Hero is a bit unusual, being illiterate, illegitimate, and introverted but emotionally intelligent, perceptive, a demisexual virgin, something of a Hades figure as he sees death as not a figure of fear but a friend and great egalitarian and indiscriminate).
Just curious to know what the Male Romance Hero has in common with others.
Holiday Wishes by Jill Shalvis is 99 pennies. It looks to be a novella in her heartbreaker bay series.
@Sam Victors — I’m not sure the comments on a sale post are the best place for this type of discussion. Perhaps you want to look into the SBTB Goodreads discussion group? (It’s a little less active than this site, but it has the advantage of allowing you to carve out your own topic niche.)
Still, I’m going to take a stab at this and say the only thing all (or most) romantic heroes have in common is love for their counterpart (whether that’s the heroine or another hero — how are the protags in same-sex romance described in shorthand? — or some menage of both). Beyond that, I don’t think you’ll find any “given” to the romance hero’s character. There’s undoubtedly a lot of commonality present in mainstream romance (a hero who is successful in most of his endeavors, who follows a personal code of honor, etc.), but I would be unwilling to stand behind an assertion that these are defining heroic characteristics because the genre is so much broader than the mainstream.
It occurs to me that this question might best be answered by someone who is dissatisfied with the dominant heroic constructs, who can point out what is missing from the typical romance hero.
I did NOT like Highland Fling. It felt like all of the plot points were based on him telling her not to do something, her doing it anyway, and trouble ensuing. Also, he’s a controlling jerk and not in a sexy way. Skip it.
