  • The Fifth Season

The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

    UPDATE: Deal no longer valid.

RECOMMENDED: The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price matched. Elyse loved this book and gave it an A:

The Fifth Season is also a relatively quick read. It opens with a cataclysmic disaster and doesn’t slow down its pace. Its characters travel widely. My only word of warning is that the book ends on a massive cliffhanger. Fortunately the sequel, The Obelisk Gate, will be released in August. After finishing this book I’m making desperate grabby hands for the next one.

If you like immersive, action-driven fantasy and if you want a fantasy world that’s not Euro-centric–or if you just love a really, really good story–I cannot recommend The Fifth Season enough.

This is the way the world ends. Again.

Three terrible things happen in a single day. Essun, a woman living an ordinary life in a small town, comes home to find that her husband has brutally murdered their son and kidnapped their daughter. Meanwhile, mighty Sanze — the world-spanning empire whose innovations have been civilization’s bedrock for a thousand years — collapses as most of its citizens are murdered to serve a madman’s vengeance. And worst of all, across the heart of the vast continent known as the Stillness, a great red rift has been been torn into the heart of the earth, spewing ash enough to darken the sky for years. Or centuries.

Now Essun must pursue the wreckage of her family through a deadly, dying land. Without sunlight, clean water, or arable land, and with limited stockpiles of supplies, there will be war all across the Stillness: a battle royale of nations not for power or territory, but simply for the basic resources necessary to get through the long dark night. Essun does not care if the world falls apart around her. She’ll break it herself, if she must, to save her daughter.

  • ‘Til Death Do Us Part

‘Til Death Do Us Part by Amanda Quick

‘Til Deal Do Us Part by Amanda Quick is $1.99! This is a gothic romance that received a C+  grade from Carrie, who said the mystery just didn’t deliver.

On the whole, though, I enjoyed this book. I’m a wimp with regard to romantic suspense, but this book had just enough mayhem to keep the story moving and not so much mayhem that I felt the need to hide under the covers. Even if this isn’t your catnip, you will probably find it to be a nice comfortable read. I’d grade it much higher if the last third of the book matched the promise of the first third of the book.

The author of the New York Times bestseller Garden of Liesreturns to Victorian London in an all-new novel of deadly obsession.

Calista Langley operates an exclusive “introduction” agency in Victorian London, catering to respectable ladies and gentlemen who find themselves alone in the world. But now, a dangerously obsessed individual has begun sending her trinkets and gifts suitable only for those in deepest mourning—a black mirror, a funeral wreath, a ring set with black jet stone. Each is engraved with her initials.

Desperate for help and fearing that the police will be of no assistance, Calista turns to Trent Hastings, a reclusive author of popular crime novels. Believing that Calista may be taking advantage of his lonely sister, who has become one of her clients, Trent doesn’t trust her. Scarred by his past, he’s learned to keep his emotions at bay, even as an instant attraction threatens his resolve.

But as Trent and Calista comb through files of rejected clients in hopes of identifying her tormentor, it becomes clear that the danger may be coming from Calista’s own secret past—and that only her death will satisfy the stalker…

  • Nimona

    Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

    UPDATE: Deal no longer valid.

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson is $1.99! This graphic novel comes highly recommended and if you dug Carrie’s Lumberjanes review, you might consider picking this one up. Some were a little confused by the end to this graphic novel, but many loved the blend of science, action, and humor. Have you read this one?

The graphic novel debut from rising star Noelle Stevenson, based on her beloved and critically acclaimed web comic, which Slate awarded its Cartoonist Studio Prize, calling it “a deadpan epic.”

Nemeses! Dragons! Science! Symbolism! All these and more await in this brilliantly subversive, sharply irreverent epic from Noelle Stevenson. Featuring an exclusive epilogue not seen in the web comic, along with bonus conceptual sketches and revised pages throughout, this gorgeous full-color graphic novel is perfect for the legions of fans of the web comic and is sure to win Noelle many new ones.

Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren’t the heroes everyone thinks they are.

But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona’s powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.

  • A Sky Full of Stars

A Sky Full of Stars by Samantha Chase

    UPDATE: Deal no longer valid.

A Sky Full of Stars by Samantha Chase is $1.99! This is a contemporary romance and book five in The Shaughnessy Brothers series, though it’s easily a standalone. It has a opposites attract element with a beta hero, which readers enjoyed. However, some mentioned that the sex scenes were fade to black if that’s something you do or don’t like.

The stars are about to align in the newest Shaughnessy brothers romance!

    WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE
Brilliant astrophysicist Dr. Owen Shaughnessy feels more connected to the cosmos than to people. He’s great with calculations, but when he leads a team of scientists to study a famous meteor shower, he doesn’t factor in his free-spirited artist assistant Brooke Matthews.

    LOVE CAN DAZZLE YOU
Polar opposites in personality, the friction between them threatens to derail the project. But the beauty and mystery of the night sky draw Owen and Brooke together—and she’s going to surprise him in ways the stars never could.

  1. Ren Benton says:

There are 452 Kindle Daily Deals today. I managed to hurt my credit card despite becoming ruthlessly critical from fatigue by the time I was done assessing the possibilities. A couple that made the final cut:

Jessamyn Stanley’s Every Body Yoga (AKA yoga for people who like to cuss) is $1.99.

Tartine Bread is $2.99. It’s apparently 300 pages of 5 bread recipes and I don’t care because bread? Using a starter instead of packaged yeast is on my bucket list, and while I theoretically know how to make one, this promises to expand my knowledge.

I skipped the Andes plane crash book because a little voice in the back of my head whispered I’m one cannibalism download away from a visit from the FBI. (Tip for my fellow introverts: The best prevention I’ve found for unwanted dinner invitations/blind dates/phone calls is to become known as “the one who always wants to debate cannibalism.”)

  2. SusanK says:

Hunting Ground (2nd Alpha and Omega book) by Patricia Briggs is $1.99 at Amazon. The first book is still $2.99.

  3. Dreamingintrees says:

Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend (which got an A review on this site) is one of the Kindle Daily Deals, as is One Fell Sweep.

  4. Another Anne says:

The Royal We, by the fuggirls is on sale as part of the Kindle Daily Deals. Great timing with the sale and the royal engagement news today.

The latest book in Louise Penney’s mystery series about Inspector Gamache is also a Kindle Daily deal.

I need to stop shopping for me and start shopping for everyone else on my list.

  5. Hazel says:

Once Upon a Rose by Laura Florand is free on Amazon Uk. I thought it was great fun; very evocative writing.

  6. MarciaS says:

Sarina Bowen’s “Stay” is $1.49 at Amazon.

Per her email: This sale is Amazon’s doing. For one day only they’ve put Stay on sale at $1.49 in certain markets, including the US and Canada. If your market is one of them, you can get the sale price today only.

  7. Katie Lynn says:

Audible is running a promo today for your first three months for $4.95 (normally around $15/month)

The second HIM book, US, is $1.99. MM, need to read HIM first, though (its worth it!)

Dating-ish and Beard in Mind by Penny Reid are $1.99. Both parts of series but can be read as standalone, normally about $6-ish apiece. I’m currently reading Dating-ish and loving it.

  8. The latest Nora Roberts thriller, “Come Sundown,” is on for $3.99. There are seriously a lot of deals today, so it’s well worth a browse on the Kindle Daily Deal section.

  9. Susan says:

@Katie Lynn: It looks like the price for both Dating-ish and Beard in Mind already went back up to $5.99. Boo.

  10. Peggy says:

    @amazon today:
Nora Roberts “Falling for Rachel” $1.99
    Terry Pratchett “Going Postal” $1.99

  11. Msb says:

Re the zJemison novels: Obelisk Gate is out now, and the concluding volume, The Stone Sky, is either out or about to be. Read them!

  12. Ulrike says:

NK Jemison’s Stone Sky came out in August. I finished the audio version on Saturday. The trilogy is incredible. It’s devastating without being depressing.

  13. Katie Lynn says:

@Susan bummer! I bought them late last night/this morning, so they were either a KDD or I lucked into the end of a sale.

US is actually $0.99, not $1.99

  14. Marci says:

Hunted by Meagan Spooner is $1.99. Elyse reviewed it earlier this year and gave it an A. Per the review: “Hunted is a YA adaptation of the Beauty and the Beast fairytale mixed with Russian folklore and featuring an archer heroine.”

  15. hng23 says:

Nimona is adorable & deserves every award it has won.

  16. Farah says:

That Samantha Chase book was a DNF after one chapter for me. I thought it was badly written, but the real stinker was the hero calling the (blond) heroine a gypsy because she wore a long skirt. Racial slurs are a deal-breaker for me, especially in a new, contemporary book. Hard pass.

  17. Pamala says:

@Ren Benton, you come over here and sit by me.
