  • All In

    All In by Simona Ahrnstedt

RECOMMENDED: All In by Simona Ahrnstedt is $1.99! Redheadedgirl gave the book an A:

I felt like this was full of Shakespearean drama, and scheming families, and hot sex, and gorgeous clothes, but also some important things to say about how the world is functioning. There’s a lot going on, though, and the ending a tad rushed.

In the cutthroat world of Sweden’s financial elite, no one knows that better than corporate raider David Hammar. Ruthless. Notorious. Unstoppable. He’s out to hijack the ultimate prize, Investum. After years of planning, all the players are in place; he needs just one member of the aristocratic owning family on his side–Natalia De la Grip.

Elegant, brilliant, driven to succeed in a man’s world, Natalia is curious about David’s unexpected invitation to lunch. Everyone knows that he is rich, dangerous, unethical; she soon discovers he is also deeply scarred.

The attraction between these two is impossible, but the long Swedish nights unfold an affair that will bring to light shocking secrets, forever alter a family, and force both Natalia and David to confront their innermost fears and desires.

  • First Star I See Tonight

First Star I See Tonight by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

First Star I See Tonight by Susan Elizabeth Phillips is $2.99! For many people, this was one of the most anticipated romances of 2016. But others found the book had problems with race and misogyny. Do check out the review at BookThingo for more on the latter if you’re curious. If you read it, what were your impressions?

A star quarterback and a feisty detective play for keeps in this sporty, sexy, sassy novel—a long-awaited new entry in the beloved, award-winning, New York Times bestselling author’s fan-favorite Chicago Stars football series.

Piper Dove is a woman with a dream—to become the best detective in the city of Chicago. First job? Trail former Chicago Stars quarterback, Cooper Graham. Problem? Graham’s spotted her, and he’s not happy.

Which is why a good detective needs to think on her feet. “The fact is…I’m your stalker. Not full-out barmy. Just…mildly unhinged.”

Piper soon finds herself working for Graham himself, although not as the bodyguard he refuses to admit he so desperately needs. Instead, he’s hired her to keep an eye on the employees at his exclusive new nightclub. But Coop’s life might be in danger, and Piper’s determined to protect him, whether he wants it or not. (Hint: Not!) If only she weren’t also dealing with a bevy of Middle Eastern princesses, a Pakistani servant girl yearning for freedom, a teenager who just wants to fit in, and an elderly neighbor demanding Piper find her very dead husband.

And then there’s Cooper Graham himself, a legendary sports hero who always gets what he wants—even if what he wants is a feisty detective hell bent on proving she’s as tough as he is.

From the bustling streets of Chicago to a windswept lighthouse on Lake Superior to the glistening waters of Biscayne Bay, two people who can’t stand to lose will test themselves and each other to discover what matters most.

  • The Bees

    The Bees by Laline Paull

    Update: Deal no longer valid.

RECOMMENDEDThe Bees by Laline Paull is 99c! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and it’s being price matched. I LOVED this book. Margaret Atwood, whom I worship like a saint, tweeted about the book, calling it a mix between a Cinderella story and an Arthurian tale. I knew I had to read it. On GoodReads, I gave it a 4-star rating and a mini review:

This book was unlike anything I’ve read before, and I found it both unique and mesmerizing. However, the last fifty pages seemed to lack the care and craft of the ones before it. The ending was over in a rush and I felt Flora’s story should have continued on with more detail. Regardless, I was impressed with Paull’s storytelling and her ability to make bee life interesting.

The Handmaid’s Tale meets The Hunger Games in this brilliantly imagined debut set in an ancient culture where only the queen may breed and deformity means death.

Flora 717 is a sanitation worker, a member of the lowest caste in her orchard hive where work and sacrifice are the highest virtues and worship of the beloved Queen the only religion. But Flora is not like other bees. With circumstances threatening the hive’s survival, her curiosity is regarded as a dangerous flaw but her courage and strength are an asset. She is allowed to feed the newborns in the royal nursery and then to become a forager, flying alone and free to collect pollen. She also finds her way into the Queen’s inner sanctum, where she discovers mysteries about the hive that are both profound and ominous.

But when Flora breaks the most sacred law of all—daring to challenge the Queen’s fertility—enemies abound, from the fearsome fertility police who enforce the strict social hierarchy to the high priestesses jealously wedded to power. Her deepest instincts to serve and sacrifice are now overshadowed by an even deeper desire, a fierce maternal love that will bring her into conflict with her conscience, her heart, her society—and lead her to unthinkable deeds.

Thrilling, suspenseful and spectacularly imaginative, The Bees gives us a dazzling young heroine and will change forever the way you look at the world outside your window.

  • Once a Soldier

Once a Soldier by Mary Jo Putney

Once a Soldier by Mary Jo Putney is $1.99! Readers loved the strong heroine and how she paired well with the hero, but others found a bulk of the book to be dull and lacking any momentum. This is the first book in the Rogues Redeemed series. Have you read this one?

As heir to a title and great wealth, Will Masterson should have stayed home and tended his responsibilities. Instead he went to war. Now, after perilous years fighting the French, he intends his current mission to be his last. But all his plans are forgotten when he arrives in the small mountain stronghold of San Gabriel and meets her.

Knowing herself to be too tall, strong, and unconventional to appeal to a man, Athena Markham has always gloried in her independence. But for the first time in her life, she finds a man who might be her match.

Two of a kind, too brave for their own good, Athena and Will vow to do whatever it takes to vanquish San Gabriel’s enemies. For neither will back down from death, and only together can they find happiness and a love deeper than any they’d dared imagine…

A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay is $1.99. It’s mentioned a little in the comments of a review of one of his other books here:

I’m a junkie of all things paranormal, so I’m perhaps too jaded to find it scary or twisty, but it wasn’t badly written. Your level of enjoyment might entirely depend on your level of exposure. If you heckle ghosthunting shows and horror movies for being too obvious, you might be too hardcore to get much of a kick out of the book.

  2. Christine says:

I bought All In and started it–found it engaging and well-written, but I just can’t seem to stomach reading about the ultra rich at the moment…

  3. Robin says:

I read All In and overall, I felt the tone of the book sounded incredibly dated in terms of gender relations (male characters were condescending and patriarchal) and the dialog was flat and predictable. I was so surprised at the overall tone that I chalked the whole book up to “lost in translation”. I would not recommend at all.

  4. Kareni says:

I started and put aside All In as it was not speaking to me.

  5. Nora says:

    Lol Hammar. Great last name.

  6. Thanks for sharing these Amanda. I really have enjoyed Mary Jo Putney’s covers, her dress is so pretty.

  7. Helen R-S says:

I thought that First Star I See Tonight just wasn’t a very good book overall. I think I picked it up because it was on a couple of “best of 2016” lists, and I just couldn’t understand what all the hype was about. I wouldn’t recommend it.

  8. Sue the Non-Practicing Librarian says:

I loved The Bees! Fascinating and innovative novel plus Flora is such a winning and memorable heroine.

  9. Hazel says:

Another plug for The Bees; great fun!
