Paris in Love

RECOMMENDED: Paris in Love by Eloisa James is $1.99! This is a memoir about James’ time in Paris. Carrie had an earlier review of this one and loved it, giving it an A:
I took so much joy in reading this book. I truly meant to read it a little at a time, but I just devoured it. It was like this beautiful dream unfolding in front of me. It was a confection as lovely as the chocolate shoe James receives from her husband. I hadn’t planned to review this book – I picked it up purely as a guilty pleasure. But with every page I thought, “I HAVE to tell the Bitches about this book!” Now I have. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
In 2009, New York Times bestselling author Eloisa James took a leap that many people dream about: She sold her house, took a sabbatical from her job as a Shakespeare professor, and moved her family to Paris. This memoir chronicles her joyful year in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Eloisa revels in the ordinary pleasures of life—discovering corner museums that tourists overlook, chronicling Frenchwomen’s sartorial triumphs, walking from one end of Paris to another. She copes with her Italian husband’s notions of quality time; her two hilarious children, ages eleven and fifteen, as they navigate schools—not to mention puberty—in a foreign language; and her mother-in-law’s raised eyebrow in the kitchen (even as she overfeeds Milo, the family dog). Paris in Love invites the reader into the life of a most enchanting family, framed by la ville de l’amour.

The King’s Executioner by Donna Fletcher is 99c at select vendors! Elyse read this historical romance and gave it a C+ in a Lightning Review:
If you need some tattooed, axe-wielding, warrior heroes in your life, then pick up The King’s Executioner, but if you’re a stickler for historical detail, maybe steer clear.
The King of the Pict has entered into an agreement with Cathbad, Overlord of the Western Region to wed his daughter Anin. Blyth, Anin’s mother, has given her husband four fine sons and King Talon hopes Anin will do the same for him. Unfortunately, Anin’s mother wants no part of the agreement. She intends for her daughter to pick a husband of her own choosing as the women of her tribe do. She sends Anin away and no amount of threats or persuasion will make Blyth confess her daughter’s whereabouts and so King Talon sends the one man he knows who can force the woman to speak and to bring Anin to him—his executioner.
Paine is feared by all, and rightfully so. He has the power to bring great suffering and with one swing of his double-sided axe a swift death. He has been sent to collect the future Queen and deliver her to King Talon. An easy mission and one he wants to see finished quickly, but from the moment he meets Anin he knows that will prove a challenge.
Anin has no choice but to go with the executioner and wed the High King, though she would prefer not to, especially after she meets the executioner. He brings things alive in her that she has been forced to keep hidden and as her secrets begin to surface so do her feelings for the executioner.
The couple faces insurmountable challenges on their journey to Pictland and even more when they finally stand before the King.

Big Sky Mountain by Linda Lael Miller is $1.99! This is the second book in the Parable, Montana contemporary western series and it can be read as a standalone. Readers loved the hero and the opposites attract element of the romance, while others felt the actual plot didn’t match the book’s description.
With his rugged good looks, vast wealth and family name, hell-raiser Hutch Carmody is still the golden boy of Parable, Montana. But he’s done some growing up–making peace with his illegitimate half brother and inheriting half of Whisper Creek Ranch, which should have been all his. These days, Hutch knows there are some things money can’t buy: like the heart of loving, ladylike divorcée Kendra Shepherd.
Kendra’s quiet mansion reminds her of what she wants most–a devoted husband and the pitter-patter of little feet. She can’t get Hutch Carmody out of her mind. But a rough-and-tumble cowboy like Hutch, coming home for family dinner? Seems crazy! Then again, crazier dreams have become reality under the vast Montana sky.

Tangled in Sin by Lavinia Kent is $1.99! This is an erotic historical romance with BDSM elements. Some felt the ending was rather rushed, while others recommend this book for readers who prefer their sex scenes frequent and explicit. It’s the fifth book in the Bound and Determined series and can be read as a standalone.
An innocent young woman flirts with scandal and becomes the mistress of her own forbidden desires in this stimulating Regency romance from the author of Mastering the Marquess.
Lady Cynthia Westhope can’t believe the shocking rumor is true. Her childhood friend, the daughter of a duke no less, has become the madam of London’s most exclusive and notorious brothel. Though she’s known as “Sin,” Cynthia is scandalized—and surprisingly curious. Just picturing the whips, the chains, the uncontrollable urges men gratify behind closed doors sends a jolt of electricity through her body. Still, Sin can’t imagine taking part in such games—until she’s snatched off the street during a raging storm and swept away to a remote cottage.
When James Winters encounters the comely virgin, he assumes she’s one of Madame Blanche’s fresh new beauties, especially after Sin pulses in ecstasy as he ravishes her. Then he discovers that she’s Lord Westhope’s virgin daughter . . . or was. Now they will both be compromised, unless James devises a plan to save Sin from disgrace. Before long, they’re entangled in a web of tempting propositions, family secrets, and sensual intrigue—and bound together so tightly that James never wants to let go.

Reading Eloise James’ account of the time she spent in Paris with her family finally made me want to visit there. I did and loved it and went back again. I found the place lovely and the folks surprisingly friendly to a non-French speaker. Really glad to have my own copy of the book to re-read.
I loved that Eloisa James memoir much more than I expected to. The blurb above makes it sound breezy, and it is, but there’s a surprising emotional undercurrent and an honesty that makes it really work.
