  • A Bride in the Bargain

A Bride in the Bargain by Deeanne Gist

A Bride in the Bargain by Deeanne Gist is 99c! Gist is a bit of an auto-buy author for some. This is an American historical and Inspirational romance, though there does seem to be some debate on shelving it as “Inspirational” on Goodreads. Readers say that though what little and tame sexual content is in the book, there is plenty of sexual tension. It has a 4.1-star rating on Goodreads.

In 1860s Seattle, a man with a wife could secure himself 640 acres of timberland. But because of his wife’s untimely death, Joe Denton finds himself about to lose half of his claim. Still in mourning, his best solution is to buy one of those Mercer girls arriving from the East. A woman he’ll marry in name but keep around mostly as a cook.

Anna Ivey’s journey west with Asa Mercer’s girls is an escape from the griefs of her past. She’s not supposed to be a bride, though, just a cook for the girls. But when they land, she’s handed to Joe Denton and the two find themselves in a knotty situation. She refuses to wed him and he’s about to lose his land. With only a few months left, can Joe convince this provoking–but beguiling–easterner to be his bride?

  1. DonnaMarie says:

I’d recommend A Bride In The Bargain to anyone who, like me, spent Friday nights glued to the TV watching Here Come The Brides. Sweeter and tamer than my usual fare, but I had lively pictures in my head of the Bolt brothers, Big Swede and, of course, Seattle the whole time.

  2. KateB says:

“Lost Among the Living” by Simone St. James is $3.99 on Audible!

  3. roserita says:

@DonnaMarie: Thank you! I’ve had the beginning of that theme song stuck in my head forever, but couldn’t remember the name of the series (and was too lazy to look it up). The oldest brother was very cute, as I recall.

  4. DonnaMarie says:

@roserita, I’m old enough now to appreciate Robert (Jason Bolt) Brown’s attributes, but I was then, and am now, all about Jeremy Bolt aka the ever fine Bobby Sherman, who also sang that song stuck in your head.

“The bluest skies you’ve ever seen in Seattle.
And the hills the greenest greenest in Seattle.
Like a beautiful child growing up free and wild
Full hopes and full of fears…”

Or, for those of you haven’t experience this little earworm of a tune:

  5. JennyME says:

LOLling at this line from the Lady Anne cover copy: But beneath her fierce courage and bitter determination, Anne has the delicate heart of a woman

  6. Ken Houghton says:

Re: Steampunk. Paul Di Fillipo’s The Steampunk Trilogy is on sale for $1.99 at Amazon and B&N. (Probably elsewhere too.)

“Walt and Emily” is a romance. (You can guess their last names; hint: not Disney.)

  7. Teev says:

@roserita and DonnaMarie “the bluest skies you’ve ever seen are in Seattle…” I grew up (and still live) here and I cannot endorse this line. What I can attest to, though, is how on account of how many overcast days we have, even now, after living here for 50+ years, when I crest a hill and can see the mountains in their full glory, they take my breath away. Every freakin time. You can’t get jaded in Seattle cuz you just don’t get to see the pretty enough to got inured to it.

  8. Cristie says:

Toni Anderson’s The Killing Game is free on amazon right now just in case anyone else has been waiting for it to go on sale like I have.

  9. Alex says:

Seconding the sexual tension in A Bride in the Bargain. There isn’t really much for sexual content and it’s super light on the inspirational if you don’t like that. Worth reading if you like historicals and sexual tension.

  10. DonnaMarie says:

@Teev, When I visited Seattle I was lucky enough to experience the bluest skies and greenest green. The weather was perfection. You are very lucky to live in such a spectacular part of the country. Not to mention Top Pot and Fran’s. It only rained the day I was leaving. I like to believe it was because Seattle was sad to see me to go.

  11. No, the Other Anne says:

Trigger warning for attempted rape early on in A Bride in the Bargain. I wasn’t expecting that and it skeeved me out. I still finished it, but will probably not re-read it.
