Duos of Historicals and Contemporary Romances

  • The Curse of Lord Stanstead

The Curse of Lord Stanstead by Mia Marlowe

RECOMMENDED: The Curse of Lord Stanstead by Mia Marlowe is 99c at most vendors! This is a historical romance with magic and Elyse gave this book a B+:

The Curse of Lord Stanstead is a good fit for readers who are burned out on straight Regency romances and need a dash of spice, or for paranormal readers who are sick of brooding vampires. If The Order of the Muse series follows the usual formula of the second book being stronger than the first, I will be very happy indeed. I already have The Madness of Lord Westfall downloaded on my ereader, ready to go.

    When only seduction will do…

Wherever Cassandra Darkin goes, fire is sure to follow. It’s not until she’s swept into the arms of a handsome, infuriating stranger that she learns she’s responsible for the fires. As it turns out, Cassandra is a fire mage…and with her gift comes a blazing desire for sins of the flesh.

With his pretenatural ability to influence the thoughts of others, Garrett Sterling is sent to gather Cassandra for the Order of the M.U.SE. He’s entirely unprepared for his immediate attraction to the comely little firestarter. But it’s an attraction that he must quell, even as his body craves her touch and her fiery, sensual hunger.

For Garrett’s gift has a dark side…and the moment he begins to care too much for Cassandra, he knows he will doom her to an inescapable fate.

  • Bringing Home the Bad Boy

Bringing Home the Bad Boy by Jessica Lemmon

Bringing Home the Bad Boy by Jessica Lemmon is $2.99 and it was just released this January! This is a contemporary romance and the first in a series. The hero is a tattoo artist and a widower, and I just know that has to be someone’s catnip. I actually wound up buying this one last time it was on sale. The heroine also appears to be the best friend of the hero’s late wife, which I know isn’t everyone’s favorite trope. You have been forewarned. It also has a 4-star rating on GoodReads, which is mighty impressive.

    The Bad Boy Is Back

Evan Downey needs a new beginning. Since the death of his wife five years ago, the brilliant tattoo artist has shut himself away in a prison of grief that not even his work can break him out of-and what’s worse, Evan knows his son Lyon is bearing the brunt of his seclusion. Moving back to the lake town of Evergreen Cove where he spent his childhood summers is his last chance for a fresh start.

Charlotte Harris knows she owes it to her best friend’s memory to help Evan and his son find their way again, but she can’t stop her traitorous heart from skipping a beat every time she looks into Evan’s mesmerizing eyes. Charlotte is determined to stay strictly in the Friend Zone-until a mind-blowing night knocks that plan by the wayside. Now, if they’re brave enough to let it, Charlotte and Evan might just find a love capable of healing their broken hearts . . .

  • To Marry a Duke

To Marry a Duke by Julianne MacLean

To Marry a Duke by Julianne MacLean is $2.99! This is a historical romance between an American heiress and, of course, a duke. Some readers mentioned that they didn’t like the authors portrayal of Americans vs. the British, but others loved the marriage of convenience aspect of the plot. Have you read this one?

    My dear sister Clara,

London society is so much more complicated than I could ever have known! Every night is a different ball or assembly, and a different swirl of glittering jewels and rustling gowns. Though I fear I am making social blunders left and right I am having some measure of success in my (or rather, Mother’s) objective. Mother is beside herself with glee at the attentions I have been receiving from a few gentlemen she finds supremely suitable as husband material.

But my dearest sister, it is so hard for me to even look at any gentleman but a certain duke, who, if I may confess, makes my heart beat so that I fear it can be seen across a ballroom. He is James Langdon, the Duke of Wentworth, and though I may sound dramatic, he makes me feel as no man ever has before.

But I must push these feelings away. I sometimes hear whispers about his dark past, and he is quietly called the Dangerous Duke. Oh Clara! I am secretly overjoyed that he may love me, and at the same time terrified of his attentions. I have waited so long for my true love, and now I must resist him to protect my heart.

If only I knew how to proceed…

    Your devoted sister,
    Sophia

  • The Marriage Pact

The Marriage Pact by Linda Lael Miller

The Marriage Pact by Linda Lael Miller is 99c and a Kindle Daily Deal! As of right now, it’s still showing up as $3.99 at other vendors, but keep your fingers crossed for some price matching. This is a small town romance between a woman and the man who interrupted her wedding. It also features the “off limits best friend’s sibling” trope. There seems to be some contention in Goodreads reviews about the level of detail in this book. Some thought there were too many details, which dragged down the pace. However, others loved how the author carefully crafted the story.

The women of Bliss County are ready to meet the men of their dreams! See how it all begins in this enthralling new series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Linda Lael Miller

Ten years ago, Hadleigh Stevens was eighteen and this close to saying “I do,” when Tripp Galloway interrupted her walk down the aisle. Now that she’s recovered from her youthful mistake and Tripp’s interference, Hadleigh and her single friends form a marriage pact. She doesn’t expect Tripp to meddle with her new plan to find Mr. Right—or to discover that she’s more attracted to him than ever!

Divorced and eager to reconnect with his cowboy roots, Tripp returns to Bliss County to save his ailing father’s ranch. He’s not looking for another wife—certainly not his best friend’s little sister. But he’s never been able to forget Hadleigh. And this time, if she ends up in his arms, he won’t be walking away!

  1. L says:

There’s a freebie on Amazon I really, really recommend. It’s called The Whiskey Tide by M. Ruth Myers. (I don’t know how to put a link in.) It’s set in America during Prohibition. When the father/sole bread winner suddenly dies, the women in the family turn to rum running to pay the bills. There’s a nice romance that slowly develops, no insta-love, which I appreciated. I really liked the story and the characters. Did I mention it’s free?

  2. LML says:

Thanks, L. For those who enjoy mysteries, author M. Ruth Myers also wrote a series, beginning with No Game for a Dame, with an interesting and well portrayed sleuth and a fabulous (setting a place in the past) background.

  3. Lyndon says:

No Game For A Dame is free on kindle at Amazon.
Other than my virtual TBR pile growing, this looks like a very cost-effective use of $0.00.

  4. chacha1 says:

fwiw, I read Bringing Home the Bad Boy and it was really not very good. The hero is pushy about sex, there are some glaring editorial errors, and there is a nasty scene toward the end meant to underscore how worthless the heroine feels, which has been AMPLY established previously.
