In 2009, I went to Durham, NC, for a Bosoms book event organized by Jennifer Lohmann of the Durham County Public Library. It was easily one of the best Bosoms events I attended – she worked with the local Barnes & Noble to host the event, and the local RWA chapter came out as well. Y’all. THERE was a LINE.
The best part was meeting Jennifer. She spends much of her time building knowledge, education and respect for the romance genre in her own library system, and among the library science students she teaches, and when I learned about her efforts on behalf of romance, I had to tell lots and lots of people. Including RWA.
So imagine my booty-shaking delight when she won this year’s Librarian Award- WOO HOO! I’m so happy, I can’t even tell you. It is amazing and wonderful when people like Jennifer are recognized professionally for their work on behalf of the genre and the awesome women who read it. Congratulations, Jennifer!
And you know, when a librarian wins an award, my thoughts turn to… Photoshop.
YES. Photoshop contest ahoy! Here’s a really, REALLY awesome picture of Jennifer and her husband Lars:
And here’s a VERY BIG one for contest purposes: Right Click and Save please!
And here’s the contest: take that image and make a romance cover out of it! Here’s a sample:
Obviously it was inspired by Karina Bliss’ What the Librarian Did but you can make it into a cover of whatever type of romance you like.
Jennifer and I will judge the entries. The winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to the bookstore of her choice AND will direct a $50 contribution to the library or Friends of the Library organization of her choice. Yes, international libraries are entirely acceptable if I can figure out how to make a donation. The winner will also receive a big ol’ box of assorted romance novels from Jennifer from the RWA National conference in Nashville. She says she will make sure to get as many possible signed and will send them in August once she returns from the conference.
Entries are due Saturday 10 April 2010 by midnight EDT. The entries will be on display here early the following week, and the winner will be announced Wednesday 14 April 2010. Email your entry to sarahATsmartbitchestrashybooksDOTcom with ‘Librarian’ in the subject line. PLEASE make sure your graphics are no wider than 350 pixels!
Congratulations again to Jennifer Lohmann, and big thanks to the Durham County Library for being so awesome.
Congrats, Jennifer, on your award from RWA! I would enjoy (and appreciate) hearing about how you promoted romance through your library. And great idea for a contest!
Awesome!! I am all over this.
How fun!
I love the pert little pink bow on her shirt. What a great contrast between them…will make for some great contest entries for sure!
When I read the heading on this post, I thought, “Oh NO! She died?!?” I was so glad the contest was in honor or her awesomeness instead!!!
And for the record, when I die…yes, I do want a photoshop contest in my honor…thankuverymuch.
Hey, that’s MY RWA chapter you’re talking about there! And it’s awesome in its ability to turn out the crowds.
Go Jennifer! This is so deserved.
it was a wicked cool event!

congrats Jennifer!
what a great idea for a contest. here in Germany I often think regarding this genre, we’re way off the map.
but you’re name reminded me that my home town actually has a bookstore called “Buchhandlung Lohmann” (this is in Meiningen, Thuringia).
That picture? Absolutely ADORABLE.
I can’t participate in this one, but THIS IS A FANTASTIC CONTEST IDEA. [/shouty] Jennifer and Lars are Good People.
Could those two be any more adorable? I vote NO.
LOVE the expression on Lars’ face, like he’s doing his best to impersonate a romance novel hero (this is not snark, I really like it). If this were my husband, I’m not sure he would even show up for the photo.
So cute! (Congrats to Jennifer Lohmann for winning the award.)
This is fucking awesome. Sadly, I have zero knowledge in the Ways of Photoshop, but I can’t wait to see the entries!
Just emailed my submission. Can you let me know if I can post it on my blog as well?
I am all over this like Astroglide on a Wang of Mighty Lovin’.

WE LOVE JENNIFER!! She is most deserving of this honor. 🙂 I met you at the above-mentioned event, Sarah, and it was just as cool as you say it was.
And those pictures of Jennifer and Lars are ADORABLE.
Thanks for the congrats everyone! I’m so excited and CANNOT believe Lars agreed to pose for the picture, but I’m so glad he did. I look forward to seeing the results!

Congratulations to you Jennifer. You’ll have so much fun as Librarian of the Year! And soon I’ll have to pass on the tiara. (Actually – there was no tiara, much to my disappointment).
