    Genre: ,
    Series: Unconventional Brides #1

Tired white lace, rote promises, same-old ceremonies—some brides have no time for that. They’ll break the rules, turn tradition into straight-up scandal—and improvise as much as it takes to turn their wildest wedding dreams into real love…

Eva Ward has won a lavish wedding on the nation’s hottest morning show and can’t wait to kick off her happily-ever-after in style. Too bad her fiancĂ© backs out on-air—and cameraman Aidan Walker makes sure her private meltdown goes viral, down to the last couch-kicking moment. The only way Eva can save face and keep her perfect nuptial plans on track is to star in a new “find-a-groom” reality segment. But finding Mr. Right in one month means ignoring her handsome new producer—none other than Aidan himself—and getting their instant, exasperating attraction out of her system…

Eva soon finds there’s a lot more to Aidan than freewheeling charm. But one glimpse of his caring side can’t make up for off-camera politics, Aidan’s own secrets—or Eva’s fear that they’re too different to ever trust each other. So it’s time for her to flip this script, write twists no one will see coming—and risk her heart to get the real thing…

Sarah says: I know this is a 12/27 publication date but to some that’s January and I’m bending the rule a little because I learned about this after our last Hide Your Wallet column. Contemporary comedy romance? Yes please!

    Series: Passenger #2

Now, robbed of the powerful object that was her only hope of saving her mother, Etta finds herself stranded once more, cut off from Nicholas—the eighteenth century privateer she loves—and her natural time. When Etta inadvertently stumbles into the heart of the Thorns, the renegade travelers who stole the astrolabe from her, she vows to finish what she started and destroy the astrolabe once and for all. Instead, she’s blindsided by a bombshell revelation from their leader, Henry Hemlock: he is her father.

Suddenly questioning everything she’s been fighting for, Etta must choose a path, one that could transform her future. Still devastated by Etta’s disappearance, Nicholas has enlisted the unlikely help of Sophia Ironwood and a cheeky mercenary-for-hire to track both her and the missing astrolabe down. But as the tremors of change to the timeline grow stronger and the stakes for recovering the astrolabe mount, they discover an ancient power far more frightening than the rival travelers currently locked in a battle for control . . . a power that threatens to eradicate the timeline altogether.

    Winifred Allen needs a vacation.

  • Finding Your Feet

Finding Your Feet by Cass Lennox

    Author: Cass Lennox
Released: January 16, 2017 by Riptide Publishing
    Genre: , ,
    Series: Toronto Connections #2

While on holiday in Toronto, Evie Whitmore planned to sightsee and meet other asexuals, not audition for a dance competition. Now she’s representing Toronto’s newest queer dance studio, despite never having danced before. Not only does she have to spend hours learning her routine, she has to do it with one of the grumpiest men she’s ever met. Tyler turns out to be more than a dedicated dancer, though—he might be the kind of man who can sweep her off her feet, literally and figuratively.

Tyler Davis has spent the last year recovering from an emotionally abusive relationship. So he doesn’t need to be pushed into a rushed routine for a dumb competition. Ticking major representation boxes for being trans and biracial isn’t why he went into dance. But Evie turns out to be a dream student. In fact, she helps him remember just how good partnering can be, in all senses of the word. Teaching her the routine, however, raises ghosts for him, ones he’s not sure he can handle.

Plans change, and people change with them. Learning a few steps is one thing; learning to trust again is another entirely.

Sarah says: I enjoyed the romance as much as the setting of Cass Lennox’s earlier book in this series, Blank Spaces. This book pairs two people against the backdrop of a dance competition, so I’m extremely interested.

  • The Bear and the Nightingale

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

    Author: Katherine Arden
Released: January 10, 2017 by Del Rey
    Genre:

A magical debut novel for readers of Naomi Novik’s Uprooted, Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus, and Neil Gaiman’s myth-rich fantasies, The Bear and the Nightingale spins an irresistible spell as it announces the arrival of a singular talent with a gorgeous voice.

At the edge of the Russian wilderness, winter lasts most of the year and the snowdrifts grow taller than houses. But Vasilisa doesn’t mind—she spends the winter nights huddled around the embers of a fire with her beloved siblings, listening to her nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, she loves the chilling story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon, who appears in the frigid night to claim unwary souls. Wise Russians fear him, her nurse says, and honor the spirits of house and yard and forest that protect their homes from evil.

After Vasilisa’s mother dies, her father goes to Moscow and brings home a new wife. Fiercely devout, city-bred, Vasilisa’s new stepmother forbids her family from honoring the household spirits. The family acquiesces, but Vasilisa is frightened, sensing that more hinges upon their rituals than anyone knows.

And indeed, crops begin to fail, evil creatures of the forest creep nearer, and misfortune stalks the village. All the while, Vasilisa’s stepmother grows ever harsher in her determination to groom her rebellious stepdaughter for either marriage or confinement in a convent.

As danger circles, Vasilisa must defy even the people she loves and call on dangerous gifts she has long concealed—this, in order to protect her family from a threat that seems to have stepped from her nurse’s most frightening tales.

    Amanda says: RUSSIAN FAIRY TALES!

But when Katie’s fiance runs off with another woman and a quality control fiasco sends her customers running for the hills, it’s time for Katie to make a change.

Her company’s salvation presents itself in the form of a partnership opportunity with the legendary Ristorante Caramelli of Rome, and Katie has no other choice but to jet off to Italy to convince gorgeous, hotheaded co-owner Luca Caramelli that she’s a worthy partner. Gaining Luca’s respect proves harder than Katie could have ever imagined, however, when he insists that she must learn how to cook and how to eat true Italian food before he will ever agree to their companies partnership.

Katie and Luca’s tension in Italy mounts into a fierce public rivalry that erupts back in the States with a nationally televised cooking competition. As Katie tries to channel her inner Mario Batali to win the competition, she must choose between the flavorless prepackaged life that she worked so hard to maintain and the mouth-watering uncertainty of a life chock full of carbohydrates and Caramellis.

  • Diablo Lake: Protected

Diablo Lake: Protected by Lauren Dane

    Author: Lauren Dane
Released: October 10, 2016 by Carina Press
    Genre: ,
    Series: Diablo Lake #2

New York Times bestselling author Lauren Dane welcomes you back to Diablo Lake, Tennessee: a town founded by witches, governed by werewolves and full of secrets

Tensions are building in Diablo Lake as the two main rival Packs vie for control, and the town is divided along lines of Pack loyalty. Aimee Benton and Mac Pembry are on opposite sides and he seems to find excuses to spar with her daily. He’s infuriating—not to mention charming, gorgeous and oh-so-lickable.

Mac can’t resist pushing Aimee’s buttons. She’s always been incredibly sexy, and the wolf in him craves a female with fire in her belly. When a heated argument ends with a sizzling kiss and Mac gets a taste of her, he craves more—and she can’t seem to get enough of him, either. The forbidden nature of their attraction stokes their desires until they’re secretly hooking up whenever they can.

But then Mac’s clan goes too far, and Aimee shuts him out. She’s hurt and angry—but that’s nothing compared to the rage Mac is feeling toward his own Pack. A fight is brewing that will plunge the whole town into chaos, and someone will have to cross Pack lines to keep the town’s fragile peace from breaking apart for good.

Sarah says: Again, a series I started and liked, and am curious to see what happens next. I’ve been trying to explain why this paranormal shifter series grabbed me while many others do not, and I think it’s partially the family feud in a small town made more dangerous by the part where they turn into rage-filled wolves. It adds spice. Or the smell of wet dog. Whichever.

  • Passing Strange

    Passing Strange by Ellen Klages

    Author: Ellen Klages
    Released: January 24, 2017 by Tor.com
    Genre: , , ,

San Francisco in 1940 is a haven for the unconventional. Tourists flock to the cities within the city: the Magic City of the World’s Fair on an island created of artifice and illusion; the forbidden city of Chinatown, a separate, alien world of exotic food and nightclubs that offer “authentic” experiences, straight from the pages of the pulps; and the twilight world of forbidden love, where outcasts from conventional society can meet.

Six women find their lives as tangled with each other’s as they are with the city they call home. They discover love and danger on the borders where mystery, science, and art intersect.

Inspired by the pulps, film noir, and screwball comedy, Passing Strange is a story as unusual and complex as San Francisco itself from World Fantasy Award winning author Ellen Klages.

Amanda says: I’m not a big novella reader, but this seems both charming and lots of fun.

David and Adele look like the picture-perfect husband and wife. But then why is David so controlling? And why is Adele so scared of him?

As Louise is drawn into David and Adele’s orbit, she uncovers more puzzling questions than answers. The only thing that is crystal clear is that something in this marriage is very, very wrong. But Louise can’t guess how wrong—and how far a person might go to protect their marriage’s secrets.

In Behind Her Eyes, Sarah Pinborough has written a novel that takes the modern day love triangle and not only turns it on its head, but completely reinvents it in a way that will leave readers reeling.

Amanda says: I’m not a huge mystery/thriller person, but a lot of my bookish friends and people I follow on twitter have been talking about this like crazy.

  3. cayenne says:

January is getting 2017 off with a bang! I was going to list my top to-reads for January, then realized that the unedited list is 14 books. I’m going to have to stalk the romance section of my library’s Overdrive, or else my credit card is screwed.

  4. LML says:

Good morning and Happy New Year to all SBTB writers and readers! Thank you for enlivening my days.

  5. Mikaela says:

The Cold Eye by Laura Anne Gilman. just 10 days to go. *bounces up and down* Nalini Singh’s upcoming releases, all of them, more books by Grace Burrowes, Lauren Dane and Thea Harrison.
    And many, many others.

  6. MirandaB says:

I’m looking forward to Cold Eye too.

  7. Darlynne says:

I’m looking forward to a day when GIRL does not appear in the title of any adult fiction, particularly crime novels and/or suspense. Until then, my library has some of the books mentioned here and there’s always my creaking TBR to keep me company.

Not exactly starting 2017 in a great mood, am I? :\

  8. Lora says:

I have been crushing on Prince Harry since, well, forever, so anything with a royal theme..especially a prince in disguise *YUM* like the Royal Scandal you mentioned goes straight to my TBR!
I loved The Royal We a few years ago and now the fourth in my fave series (Contemporary romcom with royals? YES PLEASE GET IN MY KINDLE!) Royal Romances by Molly Jameson is out on Amazon now.

  9. bev says:

In January I’m looking forward to the release of I Love You Subject to the Following Terms and Conditions by Erin Lyon and Caraval by Stephanie Garber.

  10. Kim W. says:

The Insert Groom Here amazon link isn’t working for me – giving me weird redirects. Not sure if it’s just my cookies or something.

Thanks for the heads up about January!

  11. Amanda says:

@Kim W: Thanks for the catch! Should be working now!

  12. cleo says:

I’m very excited about A Gentlemam Wanted by KJ Charles – m/m Victorian road trip romance with non-nobleman heroes. This looks lighter than her usual fare and like so much fun.

And I’m looking forward to the last of the Queers of LaVista series by Kris Ripper – f/f featuring a control freak real estate agent who gets excited about taxonomies and is desperately trying to get pregnant and a laid back hipster with a new baby. And fake dating. I’m a sucker for pretend relationships that turn into relationships.

  13. Erika says:

I’m looking forward to the latest in Megan Whalen Turner’s Queen’s Thief series. It’s called ‘Thick as Thieves’ and I can’t wait!

  14. cleo says:

@cleo – oops, As LaVista Turns, book 4 in The Queers of LaVista isn’t out until the end of Feb. But I’m still excited for it.

  15. Crystal says:

Just me that preordered Breathless by Beverly Jenkins? After reading Fprbidden, I’m all over that Old West series.

  16. Gigi says:

I’m looking forward to Chanel Cleeton’s On Broken Wings and Joanna Shupe’s Mogul!

  17. Amanda says:

I’m so excited for BREATH OF FIRE. Two. Days.

I’m also really looking forward to FULL PACKAGE by Lauren Blakely.

And BREATHLESS by Beverly Jenkins comes out at the end of the month!

  18. Jill-Marie says:

I can’t wait for “Rings of Fire,” Book IV in the “Dressage Chronicles” series by Karen McGoldrick. **EVERY** horse lover owes it to herself to read this series, whether you’re a “dressage person” or not. McGoldrick makes up for every bad horse book ever written, and there’s been a lot of them. There is a bit of romance, but mostly it’s just the characters’ a deep, abiding love for horses that shines through.

Trust me, people. READ THESE BOOKS!!

  19. Katie Lynn says:

I’m most excited about that next Toronto Connections book and the new series from Annabeth Albert. The first book is called Off Base, an MM book with a military hero and a forced proximity storyline.

  20. Renee says:

    Hard Hitters. Sarina Bowen
    Midnight Obsession. Melinda Leigh
    Safe Bet. Monica Murphy
    Chasing Moonlight. Raven St. Pierre

  21. Kumiko Shin says:

Looking forward to HARD HITTER by Sarina Bowen, and GOOD BOY by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy.

  22. Ariadna says:

Yes, FINDING YOUR FEET and WHITEOUT are deffo on my To-Buy list. Other titles include:

THE SUMMER PALACE by C.S. Pacat (a Captive Prince short story featuring Laurent and Damen)

HISTORY IS ALL YOU LEFT ME by Adam Silvera (an M/M book. Silvera’s books have a tendency to bring out the kleenex in the best way possible)

DREADNOUGHT by April Daniels (a transgender girl becomes a superheroine. YA genre)

  23. Kay says:

Laura Florand’s new book is coming out on the 24th 🙂

  24. Linda says:

    > San Francisco in 1940 is a haven for the unconventional. Tourists flock to the cities within the city: the Magic City of the World’s Fair on an island created of artifice and illusion; the forbidden city of Chinatown, a separate, alien world of exotic food and nightclubs that offer “authentic” experiences, straight from the pages of the pulps; and the twilight world of forbidden love, where outcasts from conventional society can meet.

yeeeeaaaahhhh. Maybe this is good but calling chinatown an alien world really belies the historical reasons for its existence and the shape and form it takes. It’s shit no one should be doing unless it’s subverted hard.
