Siren’s Tide

by Philippa Ballantine

Siren’s Tide is the first book in the Sea King’s Daughter novella series that follows six mermaid sisters. I thought the novella was a little rushed and uneven, and while it sets up the world for the remaining five books, it didn’t do a great job of capturing my imagination.

Ianthe Liakos is a mermaid and paranormal investigator (she looks human when she’s not in the water). She’s working in DC with her assistant/friend the ghost of Dolly Madison (not making that up) when a new Big Bad shows up in town and starts killing people. Ianthe realizes she needs to stop the threat targeting the supernatural community, and she finds an unlikely ally in Clayton Abernathy, a revenant from the Revolutionary War.

There’s a lot of world building that takes place in 82 pages, and the romance between Clayton and Ianthe never really comes to fruition (although it might in later books). I felt like it was too much too quick, and I’m not sure it hooked me enough to try the next five novellas. Someone who loves mermaids or needs a quick paranormal read might find themselves more intrigued.

Elyse

Ianthe Liakos is a mermaid from a different dimension and between that and now working as a PI in the corrupt climate of Washington DC, she’d thought she’d seen it all.

But when following a case leads down a trail of money that connects the murders of young political interns to a new paranormal threat, she realizes she must protect the next target.

The waters turn even murkier when Clayton Abernathy, a newly risen revenant fresh out of the grave, finds himself under the power of this new unnatural threat. Ianthe must hunt down this new threat to DC, while trying to keep her own identity safe. If the paranormal citizens of Washington DC found out that a mermaid has returned her own life and mission would be in danger.

And when it becomes clear that the murderer and Ianthe’s mermaid past are inexplicably intertwined, she realizes she may just be out of her depth dealing with this killer.

  1. MoonJewel says:

It’s starting to feel like paranormal romance is just MadLibs. There are (number) of (paranormal entity) (sibling or family type). (Main character with unusual to US audience name) is a (job type that involves the police) who is friends with (other paranormal entity.) When the big bad starts attacking people, main character has to team up with (other paranormal entity different from main character) to stop them. Will they stop the big bad in time and find love in the process? (Accepted variation is that either main character or love interest is human and so drawn into the paranormal world by the love interest.)
