618. The Romance Reader’s Handbook with Steve Ammidown

The Romance Readers Handbook, a pink cover spiral bound with pictures of five authors including Laura Kinsale and Heather Graham In June 1989, Kathryn Falk published The Romance Reader’s Handbook, a 354 page spiral bound collection of everything a romance reader would need to know. Steve Ammidown leads us on a brief tour of this artifact of romance history.

There’s a collection of over 2000 pseudonyms, plus a directory of where to contact authors, lists of bookstores that love romance, and recommended reads. And of course, advertisements from authors inviting readers to correspond with them.

This is early social media for authors and readers, and it’s a fascinating time capsule.

  1. Kareni says:

There were lots of familiar names in this conversation, Sarah. For a long time, Elizabeth Lowell (aka Ann Maxwell and half of A.E. Maxwell); Nora Roberts (aka J.D. Robb); and Jayne Ann Krentz (all of whose pseudonyms I recognized above) were my three favorite authors. Tell Me No Lies and Sweet Starfire are still on my shelf along with a number of books by Nora Roberts.

  2. Kate says:

Am I the only one having trouble with the PDF?

  3. @SB Sarah says:

Nope – My mistake. Should be fixed! Here’s another link should you need it. Apologies!

  4. Meg says:

    Thank you, Sarah!!!!

  5. Rhonda says:

The Paperback Exchange is still around (unless something happened really recently). As long as I’ve shopped there, it has been in Lemoyne, PA which is the borough next door to Camp Hill.

  6. Stasi says:

What I think is funny is Jill Shalvis (who’s been around quite a while now) still has that you can send a self-addressed envelope to a po box and she’ll send you a couple book plates. I’ve done it once and a got a couple when she was starting her newest series.

  7. Kate says:

Thanks for reposting the link! Very fun to see the Waldenbooks in Mountain View, CA where I spent a ton of time as a tween mentioned as a store that cares.
