607. RT Rewind: March 2016 Ads & Features

Smart Podcast Trashy Books Romantic Times RewindWe’re looking at the ads and features from the March 2016 issue of RT Book Reviews!

We’ve got cowboy heads growing out of gravel roads, a dude who looks like he’s on fire, and that one guy who is always ripping his shirt off from romance covers. We decide on an in-house definition of “Castle Bangenschloss.”

Oh! And a really angry reader wants self pub authors to stop using the same stock images for different covers. It’s wild, y’all.

  1. Aw thank you for the shoutout! (And I do include the recommended book as part of the tier!) This was such a fun flashback because the 2016 RT meeting is the only one I ever attended. Also of note that everything they said about self-pub YA in 2016 is still an issue in 2024.

  2. Sarah says:

I remember when Claire posted her ‘fic’ and the fact that this is now ancient fannish history could not make me feel ollder.

  3. @SB Sarah says:

@Dahlia: I mean, I’m a big big fan of yours. Is it not WILD that the same issues are still relevant in YA now? Unreal.

@Sarah: This wasn’t my fandom so my memories are mostly from when things went sideways on Tumblr after the Shadowhunters show premiered… which also feels ancient.

  4. Sarah C says:

I got stuck on the call for Jewish romance heroines. Was there a follow up article? I would be all over that list.

  5. Kathleen says:

The Infamous Heir needs to exit the building following the marked exits away from the building.

  6. Betsydub says:

    Uh-oh; Elizabeth Amber’s “Nicholas” pops up its… uh… head(s) again.
I still want to know who “Elizabeth Amber” really is. Anyone have any clues?

  7. @SB Sarah says:

@Betsydub: I have never figured it out, nor heard a single rumor as to who it is/was.

  8. @SB Sarah says:

The article was more of a discussion as to how few there were and what books did have them. But I don’t recall seeing a list in future issues. If I spot one, I’ll share!

  9. Sandra says:

I’m from Florida, and that cover for Sebring does not look like the Sebring I know. The town itself is pretty nice, built during the 1920’s land boom and full of Art Deco buildings. Granted it’s on the Lake Wales Ridge, which is the highest part of Florida, but still not mountains, or even very high hills. And if it refers to the car, still not impressed. A mid-range family sedan is not heroic automotive material for me, even in the convertible version.
