503. Bread, Cozy Fantasy, Sex, and Romance with Jane Buehler

My guest today is Jane Buehler, author of The Forest Bride and The Village Maid. I have several favorite parts of this conversation, including our discussion of cozy fantasy, addressing and undoing misconceptions about sex in romance, and sourdough starters and bread making.

So fantasy, writing, sex, and bread. Several excellent topics!

What about you?

What have you learned or unlearned from sex in romance?
Do you have a sourdough starter? What’s its name?
Do you like cozy fantasy?

  1. Pre-Successful Indie says:

Bought The Village Maid two minutes into the conversation, maybe? If that, haha. I’m liable to buy the rest of the recs, but I’m trying to go easy on my TBR right now, so those will come later.

Cozy fantasy was something I wanted to exist / wished was a thing for a long time, and it’s so lovely to see it happen. Well put in the episode: there’s room for big violent world-saving peril, that’s fine, but why not have “cozy mystery but for other genres” as well? I read romance because, among other things, I love personal stakes and character development. Those factors can blend wonderfully with other genres, too.

    Excited to read more!

  2. Kareni says:

What a very enjoyable interview! Thank you, Sarah and Jane.

A book that I recently enjoyed that I think fits the cozy fantasy category is ~

Miss Percy’s Pocket Guide (to the Care and Feeding of British Dragons) by Quenby Olson

  3. LisaM says:

I really enjoyed this interview, thank you both!

I think Celia Lake’s books are cozy fantasy (usually with romanceas well). I just started her most recent, The Hare and the Oak. There was some buzz about the coziness of Travis Baldree’s Legends and Lattes when it came out, but I haven’t read it yet.

  4. ReadKnitSnark says:

My immediate reaction to the cozy fantasy rec request was Celia Lake. But don’t take my word for it… https://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/reviews/eclipse-by-celia-lake/

I dipped my toe in with Eclipse, and as it was just the cuppa I was looking for, I 1-clicked on Outcrossing and have on subsequent weekends been wallowing my way through the warm fuzzies that is her Mysterious Charm series. So. Good! (No regrets on finishing one book and 1-clicking the next in the series!) I’m now ready to move on to the Mysterious Powers series.

Also, I feel that Katherine Addison’s The Goblin Emperor hits the notes of cozy fantasy, though the world building is more intricate and incredible than what “cozy” maybe calls for.

  5. EC Spurlock says:

I am just glad to finally have a name for what it is I write.

  6. Kareni says:

@EC Spurlock, if you are willing to share, under what name do you write?

  7. JaneB says:

Yay, more recommendations! Celia Lake has been on my list for a while—I must read some soon.

I loved Legends and Lattes; the introduction is a bit gory but then the entire rest of the book follows the protagonist’s adventures as she opens and runs a coffee shop. It was clever and truly stayed in “cozy” territory. Also it features a giant cat.

I also loved the Goblin Emperor, but I felt a bit of stress about the situation (how Maia could never be alone or get any time to meditate!) so for me, it made me a little anxious when reading. I couldn’t decide how I’d classify it.
