260. Inspiration and Illegal Contact: An Interview with Santino Hassell

March 2018 Update: I’ve added a new introduction to this episode, which is included in the transcript as well.

I interview author Santino Hassell about his new series with Berkley, starting with Illegal Contact, which just went on sale on August 15th. We discuss his inspiration for football romance since he’s a baseball fan, and we talk about his being one of few men writing romance. We cover how he got started as a writer, what writers inspired him to start and keep going, and how he addresses stereotypes of bisexuality in his writing, We also discuss his writing projects with Megan Erickson, and, a special note for all of who who are fans of his work: we describe the perfect bait to trap him, should you wish to do so. (Kidding! That would be creepy.)

I also have a giveaway to go with this episode! I have a very, very cool pair of Barons athletic socks, and a copy of Illegal Contact for one of you. There will be a giveaway widget in the show notes for this entry at SmartBitchesTrashyBooks.com/podcast, and you can enter to win.

  1. Arethusa says:

I am trying to keep calm right now because I love SH’s books *sooooo* much. Of all the writers I’ve read who write “diverse” books he’s the only one whose characters seemed really fresh yet familiar at the same time. They read like persons you could meet right around the corner, or in some fandom space. And the paranormal books are greeeeat and now a sports romance! OMG. I am the PA you definitely would not want, maybe.

This podcast made my month if not summer if not at least latter half of the year I am so grateful thank you thank you to everyone who made it possible.

  2. Shana says:

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for this interview. Santino’s books have become an “auto-buy” for me, or rather “OMFG PREORDER THE NEW TITLE RIGHT NOW”.

I love that he incorporates characters from across the queer spectrum. It’s hard to find books with bisexual characters that *stay* bisexual. Same with representation of ace/demi folks. I <3 SH so much for having these types of characters front and center.

PS SH: can we have Chris's story?! I love the shorts about him…but so want him to have his own book. 🙂

  3. Carole says:

Love Santino’s Books and looking forward to the new one. Enjoyed the interview. Thanks

  4. Lumen says:

Thank you. I haven’t heard of him but his work is something that I’ll be obsessed over. Thank you for interviewing him.

  5. Ariadna says:

Seeing the announcement of that podcast (via Twitter) was the highlight of an otherwise OMGWTFWITHBBQSAUCE!kind of day.

Thank you SO MUCH for this podcast as Santino’s one of the v. few autobuy authors for me. <3 <3 <3!!!

  6. Anne says:

I’ve been wanting to read his work for a while now but this interview just pushed me over the edge. He sounds so sweet! Plus I’ve read and love the books he recommended so that just made me even happier.

  7. Pamala says:

I LOVE Santino’s books. He’s such a talented writer, one of those that you wish nothing but things for. Thanks for the excellent podcast Sarah. I’ll be adding this one to my starred copies to listen to when I need a pick me up. And thanks to you both for the book recommendations! I already read PERMANENT INK and loved it but need to pick up COFFEE BOY 🙂

  8. Kate says:

Here’s a phrase I never thought I’d hear: “Twitch streamer romance,” but hell, why not? I am definitely intrigued 😀 Great interview!

  9. Fabi says:

Thank you so much for this interview! Every time a new Santino Hassell book comes out I think THIS is my favorite. Really, all of them are my favorite. It is such a treat to listen to an interview with such a talented author. Thanks again.

  10. Sandra says:

Love Santino’s books, so thank you for the interview. My favourite quote, though, is Sarah saying “…you have to be compassionate to the person you were, because at least you’re still the same person who’s trying to learn to do better.” That’s beautiful and so true.

  11. @SB Sarah says:

I am so happy so many of you enjoyed this interview! Thank you!

  12. Kareni says:

Thanks for an enjoyable interview. And thanks for the written transcript!

  13. Anne says:

I’ve been thinking about this interview since I listened last week. Two things keep coming to mind. One, that I’m grateful for the mention about always putting characters’ bisexuality up front and center – there’s an episode of the “The Hopeless Romantic” podcast that talks about how bisexuality gets erased even in queer press and I know how much it means to me when I see mention of it in books. (BTW, Austin Chant, author of “Coffee Boy” is the co-host of that podcast.) Second, I get what he said about looking for queer books with HEA – though he’s younger than me so I was hoping it wouldn’t have still been the case – I remember when it seems my best options were Rubyfruit Jungle and Maurice. Nothing wrong with either of those, for sure, but nowhere near the choices today. Thanks in part to Santino.

  14. Nicki S says:

I just want to second the thank-you for the written transcripts of your podcasts. I know that podcasts are the newest big thing, but they aren’t my cuppa. I also have a 12 year-old who doesn’t need to overhear what I’m reading, so to speak. Yours is the only blog that I know of with podcasts that include the option of reading a written transcript instead of listening, so I’m very appreciative that I don’t miss out entirely. With the vast majority of podcasts included on blogs, you either listen or you don’t get the information. And I don’t listen, so I comment or email and suggest that they offer transcripts as well. Most don’t, and I eventually just unsubscribe from he blog. I’m reading blogs to READ the posts, sometimes late at night, sometimes in public situations (I use a Kindle Fire for everything online) and don’t always have earbuds, or the desire to use them. So thank you very much, and please continue to post transcripts to the podcasts. Especially when they are interviews with authors-my favorite, or your reviews of cons that you attend.

  15. @SB Sarah says:

Thank you, Nicki! I really appreciate that. I want the content to be accessible to everyone, and not everyone can or wishes to listen, so transcripts are crucial to make that happen. Thank you – I am so happy to know you enjoy them! I don’t want anyone to miss out.

  16. Teresa C says:

Just finished Permanent Ink, and loved it (and I am in a dry stretch, reading wise) so Thank you for the recommendations.

  17. Kateb says:

I’m a little behind on my podcasts, so I just listened to this one and I just have to say… OMFG santino and Avon and Piper and Roan in an RV together?!?!?! Please tell me they will be documenting this in some way!!! I would kill to join that road trip!

  18. Kirstin says:

I put strong signals in my tbr queue after listening to this episode, and then listened to it not knowing anything about the book (I can’t keep track of the books in my queue after I put them there). I loved it! and immediately had to get the next in the series. Now I have plans to binge read the rest of his books as soon as I can get them. Thanks for introducing me to new authors!

  19. Sara says:

Are you going to address the allegations of catfishing and fraud by this author? I’d love to hear SmartBitches’ reflections on the issue.

  20. @SB Sarah says:

Hey folks: this episode has been updated today with a new introduction and new links, and an updated transcript.

  21. Jesara says:

To new listeners: please look into Santino Hassell ‘s background before/after listening to this podcast and ESPECIALLY before purchasing any books by “him”. There is compelling evidence that he lied about his identity and even worse, manipulated and used fans personal stories in his own work.
